  1. Sheesh... on OS X Kernel Overview · · Score: 2, Insightful

From the posts here, you'd think the title of the article was "Look at the silly Keep Out page".
Cmon guys its just a disclaimer. Given the potential audience, its not a bad disclaimer either. Traditional mac "classic" developers are used to doing anything they want with system extensions. If you've used MacOS9 and below, youre aware that there are a plethora of extensions out there that can cause all sorts of headaches...not all are freeware hobbiest projects.

More than anything else, I see that page as a warning to those used to using extensions to trample all over Apple's system code and cause major stability issues in the process in MacOS (not OSX).

While I agree with the majority of your post, I would like to clarify something for those unfamiliar with Macs. I'm sure Gawyn is aware of this, but others may not be. The iMac is designed for people who arent going to do much "upgrading" inside their case. Additions are either easy (RAM and 802.11) or are meant to be external (firewire, USB).

Apple DOES make tower cases that ARE meant to be upgraded inside, and Dell and others have copied the excellent case design. Accessing the inside of a new Mac tower is as easy as lifting a latch. The motherboard folds out and you have access to ALL the internals before you. No screws, no lifting the shell off a frame.

If you really didnt want to believe this is a squid, you might suppose it is a tentacled ctenophore (comb jelly which most people have never heard of but are really quite common).

From looking at the picture the animal appears to "fly" using its two HUGE fins (the fins are squid features). The mantle (head covering) is very narrow at the dorsal end (the end at the top of the picture Note to those who know what dorsal means: YES this IS the dorsal side of a squid...) while being fairly broad at the ventral side to accomodate (we presume) the mouth and organs.

The features of this animal are not at all un-squidlike, using occams razor and the BIOLOGICAL features of the animal (not just the way it looks to some shmo) its easy to hypothesize that this is a squid.

Take a look at the Pteropod Sea Angel (Clione) and tell me its a snail. When you can do that successfully come back and comment on this animal. (Note to others: Clione is VERY VERY cool, take a look at the pics if this /. story interested you)

On the contrary, Apple's liscense is less forgiving in respect to multiple single family installations.

    From the MacOSX Liscense:

2.A. This Liscense allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-Labelled computer at a time. This Liscense does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time....

Apple does not offer $10 off of MacOSX for single families wishing to install OSX on more than one computer. Additionally, if you own a non-Apple Mac clone the liscense does not allow you to install it even if you purchased a copy of OSX for it.

The major difference here is that there is no copy protection on MacOSX.

I would also disagree with your assertion that Apple makes "second rate" software. Especially if WindowsXP is considered "first rate" perhaps you meant to say "smaller" software maker.

I would guess that 90% or better will run MacOSX in either a dual boot environment or on another machine. Whether MacOSX succeeds or not is entirely dependent on the Mac community and developer acceptance...Linux will have very little effect. Linux is still too complicated to use/administer for the vast majority of folks. As for MacOSX cutting into the linux market, I have trotted quite a few of my linux pals through my office for a "test run" (at their request) since installing MacOSX PB. NetInfo and ProjectBuilder are usually big hits. Last week one of those guys bought an iBook to dual boot SuSE/MacOSX. The sample size is small and the results are inconclusive....but dont assume that linux users, even intel fans, will ignore MacOSX.
