Last noises heard from dying aliens: "Ack, ack, ack..."
So the aliens either were trying to speak TCP/IP or they were related to Bloom County's "Bill the cat"? (or was somebody playing cowboy yodeling music somewhere near the crash site?)
My internet is just a series of tubes, so all you need to do is measure the distance the hamster travels in the tube. Simple.
My internet is also a series of tubes, but I think mine use compressed air to send messages around...so I think you must have "dial-up" and I must have that "high speed broadband".
because I keep hearing exactly 1,000... I never hear 1,005 or 1,002.... I somehow doubt that the measurements are always exactly 1,000 millisieverts false precision
(yeah, yeah, I'm replying to an Anonymous Coward posting currently rated at -1 Troll)
Let's revisit this question in ten years or so....THAT's when we'll probably see the results of the radiation. Like smoking, you won't be able to pin a SPECIFIC death on radiation, but you'll see a statistical correlation and perhaps an unusual number of cancers in people in the area... yes, perhaps the cause listed on the death certificate will be "cancer", but there will be a rise in them and that rise is caused by the radiation.
It took until Windows 95 until Microsoft decided that the whole "Internet fad" thing perhaps, just maybe had some legs.... meanwhile, many techies had been on the Internet since 1988 and on the World Wide Web since 1993.
I've been granted multiple bunches of 15 mod points for over a year now and occasionally a bunch of 5 I metamoderate and post not very often, but when I do post, my posts generally are modded up and I think THAT's the key.
I suspect they're members of some sort of cult.... for future reference, I think we should call them the "Ostreidae Cyan Clan" hey! That would be a great name for a band!
Specifically? That it's anything "Super". it's going to be quite ordinary...just a little bigger. when I use the adjective "super", I mean something extraordinary.

Does anybody research these things?? It's not that THAT unusual. Slashdot is turning into Digg. Do a Google search on "supermoon hype" and read the links!
I didn't RTFA since, after all, I am on Slashdot.... but I didn't realize that Fortran & C were both part of the Algol language family.
Well... it may be easy to use, but does it blend? ...oh, wait...nevermind

My uncle would be upset with you.

false precision
1,000 millisieverts implies four significant digits of precision... I wish they wouldn't do that... just say "1 Seivert" and be done with it.

It always seem that they are hopped up on mushrooms and screaming that they're running away from "Goombas" or some other ridiculous thing.

No, no, no! It appears to be a conspiracy between Slashdot users ganjadude (952775) and elrous0 (869638) to deflect suspicion.
yes, there's a reason maxume is on my "foe" list
Thank Ghod I'm in Canada where we measure distances travelled in Kilometers

Stupid things and mistakes are submitted to Slashdot on an hourly basis. Blame timothy for actually posting it to the front page.
If I hadn't already posted to this story, you would get a mod point. (I have 11 left! woohoo!)
yes, I blame Timothy, not the original poster
I'm picturing a paper sign on the door leading down to your parent's basement with the following scrawled in crayon:
"TOMMY'S VOLCANO HIDEAWAY!!! KEEP OUT!!! NO GIRLS ALLOWED (except Mom)!"
Yeah... and your point is....?
by the way, do you have still have my Boba Fett action figure you borrowed from me last week?
Alright bunratty... you win... THIS time
