    Am I the only one who gets absolutely frustrated that people are still proposing the possibility of time-travel?

    This is why I can't party with my theoretical physicist friends anymore.

    If I had mod points, I'd mod you up. This is the absolute fucking truth. I'm so fucking tired of the anti-capitalists on slashdot. It's the most annoying aspect about the site.

    I think you need to sit down with your neighbors in your building's common room, next to the "trouble bush" (fed by the spring) and have a discussion about this... remember the talking stick that we pass around. the more we share, the better our lives are. the more we rid our lives of the scramble for possessions and monetary wealth, the higher we become.

    I don't really care about "the feds", I care more about some nutcase or group (Westboro baptist church, 4chan, etc) who might take umbrage at my religion, what I do, who I work for, where I live, what I consume, or mis-take some random sarcastic comment that I might make for a real comment.
    So for the most part, I made up a couple of fake names a LONG time ago (1990s) and use them for most of my stuff on the web (eg: reddit, facebook, gmail). Think "Rory Bellows" = "Krusty the Clown" = "Herschel Krustofski"
    I occasionally use my real name (eg: on Slashdot) on technical forums because I know co-workers and perhaps future employers are going to be Googling for my real name and I want to appear to know what I'm talking about....haha

    The important thing is that your are AWARE of the power of Google/Bing in searching, and just in general, the power of technology in tracking you. buy a new pay-as-you-go cellphone each year. go through a proxy or two when surfing the web... but don't just be paranoid, have FUN and be paranoid... think of yourself as Truman Burbank.

    Your comment made no sense for someone who's reason for doing something is not monetary:

    Why would I replace my VAX which has awesomeness with something that doesn't have awesomeness? You only make the money argument and I've already said that for me, that argument doesn't matter. So....either make a GOOD argument or STFU

    Having a VAX as your home firewall is a false economy. You're easily paying more in electricity each year to run it than you'd pay for a modern prosumer firewall. Remember, it's approximately dollar per watt per year, so a 200 watt vax costs you about 200/year in electricity.

    You're assuming that I do it for the money? Idiot.

    People still record TV? Isn't it easier just to download it and watch it later from the convenience of your HTPC?

    Unfortunately not.
    Not everyone has your Internet connection. Some of us have limits.

    Did you know that there are more capable devices that can be used as a home firewall that consume at least an order of magnitude less power than your VAX?

    Why would I want to do that?

    You could easily run that on a 100 watt system, which is still almost 900 kilowatt hours per year, so even if you only pay ~$0.10 per kw-h, $90 per year per 100 watts of draw introduces lots of opportunities for a replacement being the parsimonious choice.

    Although I have an EyeTV for my Mac and can record TV shows when I need to... my day to day TV recording needs are still met with my VCR that I've had for the past 10 years.
    (I also bought my first CD player in 1993...what's that 10 years after CDs started getting produced)
    (and I have a twenty-year old VAX 4200 minicomputer running OpenBSD as my home firewall)

    Yes, you can read a book, but at MY cafe, only books that have been handwritten on velum are allowed... I don't allow any of them high-falootin' printing press -produced monstrosities. I demand my customers use the written word as God meant it to be used... produced by monks.

    I have a coil of wire that I would like to donate to the project. I call it an "inductor" because I wrapped it on the INside of a roll of DUCT tape OR similar.
    I also have a pencil broken in half with a wire glued on one end and another wire that you can "wipe" up and down the black graphite center... I call it a "variable resistor" for some reason...but in any case... I hereby release it to be OPEN HARDWARE!
