Yeah, I am pretty "geeky" I suppose you would say. In my opinion UserFriendly suffers from.......not being funny!! Not at all!! Yeah, I can appreciate net and linux jokes; when they are funny. Am I alone in this? Surely I cannot be the only intelligent person who thinks that the strip sucks?
BTW, to even mention Bloom County in the same breath(no pun intended>:) as UserFriendly is desecrating the memory of a truly brilliant work.

Co-incidentally he wrote some popular software in the languagfe he is an expert in. The lesson here is that your startup will succeed if you have someone working for you who is such an expert on a language he has written books on that language. You know, I bet Randal Schwartz writes excellent software in perl. Funny how that works, isn't it?

Having spent some time in uniform having to carry all manner of things on my person across all sorts of terraine I can say that 2-3 is *nothing*. What counts most is how awkward these things are and if they can be assimilated into the rest of your equipment. As an aside, my understanding is that the batteries for stinger missiles are both heavy and awkward so maybe these things can be of use in more than 1 application. I don't know too much about stinger missiles though, I was a medic.>:)

rather, network applications should be written securely. Sorry, but my belief is that if you are running a daemon that is susceptible to exploit that it is far better to patch it and/or install a secure alternative(ie. SSH vs telnet) than to spend half your day being paranoid over kidz running some dumb script. I was the network admin for an ISP for three years and not once were we broken into. I detected a multiplicity of pathetic attempts, however, all were obviously lame attempts at classic exploits. My opinion is that the real crackers will only spend their efforts on targets of either political(including "glory" targets such as M$) or financial. By safeguarding against glaring holes you should never have a problem. Never. Not once.

Certainly no-one is arguing that the GPL is not a restrictive license. As most people here know it is , in fact, extra-ordinarily restrictive. I personally have always been a bit scared of overly restrictive licenses and when I release software I right I am sure to use not only a BSD style license but my own language which specifies what I consider fair use. In that, I think the solution lies. Why not tailor the GPL or BSD style licenses to you personal tastes and check out their legality with your local friendly law student or lawyer? Where is freedom of choice ? I don't like being told what to do. Not by Bill Gates, RMS, or anybody else that wants to tell me how to practise my craft.

Of course, it makes no sense but that is where the precedent is and, from this article, appears to still be. Anyone have the money to mount a challenge?

I have, for example, a umax c600 running linuxppc R5(or whatever the release is called now) just snazzily. It seems like all the responses to my original post missed the point that I was trying to make. Here it is again but slower. Apple has nothing to gain by making a decision based on idealology. Apple had either two choices 1.) license 2.) get sued by amazon trying to protect their patent. Since Apple dooesn't want to be sued(who does?) which would cost them money the chose option 2. Furthermore as a publicly held company Apple has a responsibility to its shareholders which it must zealously act upon which is to minimize financial liabilities. While RMS's teen-aged fan club on /. does not understand simple business practices(hence the abyssmal failure of all companies who attemtp to profit on "open ource" software) Apple does. Thus the bottom line(pun intended) is that /. geeks should code, sysadmin, and all that jazz and leave the business decisions to people that know what they are talking about.
