  1. one hundred what? on Negroponte Responds to $100 Laptop Criticisms · · Score: 0, Redundant

Negroponte could call it the 100 euro laptop which would be 122 dollars at the current exchange rate. If it were 100 pounds, then it would be 178 dollars. Or even better he could call it the 0x100 dollar laptop in hexadecimal. So it would really be $256.

Clearly they are trying to reverse global warming. According to Flying Spaghetti Monsterism there is a direct relationship with the declining number of pirates and an increase in global warming. There has been a precipitous decline in the Norwegian (and Swedish) Blue Parrot. The Swedish Blue differes from the Norwegian in that in addition to it's bright blue feathers it has a streak of bright yellow feathers. They often lay about in their cages pining for the fjords. Where would any self-respecting pirate would be without his parrot?

On another note the Church of the FSM in Sweden has recently beatified the Swedish Chef for his work on meatballs.

I'm still waiting for a replacement for my old tired Betamax and 8-track, though my 78 RPM record player is still going strong. I've found a really nifty way to make my black & white television look like it has color. It's a transparent sheet that's clear in the center section, the top part is blue to simulate sky and the bottom part is green to simulate grass.

  13. Car Mounted EMP Gun on New Tech to Help Prevent Hearing Loss? · · Score: 1

To protect my hearing I would love to have a car mounted electromagnetic pulse gun for zapping cars or trucks who play their stereos way too fucking loud. Not only could I use this tech to protect my hearing but any passenger in my car and of course those in targeted vehicle. Next time I pull up to a stop light near a car or truck with it's stereo booming it automatically targets. As soon as the light changes I zap the offending vehicle and drive off. I'd also like to have one mounted on the roof of my house but disguised as say a satellite dish or rotary vent. When the sound sensors pick up an offending vehicle. It would target it then once the vehicle was far enough away zap it and fry their stereo (not to mention any cell phones or other electronics in the car).

  14. Re:Was Europa Always Airless? on Earth Life Possibly Could Reach Titan · · Score: 1

The sun was much cooler billions of years ago, so it's possible that Europa had cooler conditions to allow an atmosphere of some type. Jupiter may have been warmer also. But it's interesting to think about, regardless.

On another note, I'd have to say this is the Golden Age of planetary exploration. There what 4 orbiters around Mars? An orbiter around Saturn and a probe on it's way to Pluto. Not to mention the recent probes to asteroids and comets.

  15. Was Europa Always Airless? on Earth Life Possibly Could Reach Titan · · Score: 2, Interesting

It looks like Earth's pecker tracks could be all over the solar system. What if Europa had an atmosphere early in it's life? Was it always relatively airless? So even if we discover life elsewhere in the solar system, there's a good chance it'll resemble Earth's. Even if Europa was airless what about this scenario? Big Earth rock hits Europa, vaporizes millions of tons of ice and creates a temporary atmosphere. Then a second rock hits Europa in this brief interlude. It could have survived. Unlikely, but possible.

Well, I could go on, but I think pointing out that the poster blurs the distinction between fiction and reality is sufficient.

Now for a completely off-topic rant. Actually, I worked in a call center and talked to lots of people from New Jersey. Overall, I'd have to say they were a nice bunch even when I couldn't resolve their problems. On the other hand those in the 917 area code just across the Hudson River on Manhattan Isle have a special place in hell reserved for them. Bar none, they were the worst customers I dealt with. They were arrogant, rude, demanding, and pushy and those were the nice ones. People in Boston were second worst. A distant third and fourth were two distint foreign ethnic groups from opposite ends of Asia that were also pretty bad. Upstate New York people and those on Long Island were OK. Canadians, well they weren't bad either. Just peculiar, eh.

Ditto. It's worse than that. Not only has the quality dropped, the headlines are very misleading and the scoops are confusing. Have you noticed that slashdot is lagging on posting stories. Often I'll read about what used to be a slashdot worthy story elsewhere first, hours even days before it appears on slashdot. Does slashdot have the equivalent of an undiagnosed brain tumor?
