  4. Kodak Products are a Proprietary Nightmare on Kodak vs. Sun Java Trial Date Set · · Score: 3, Informative

Kodak's biggest fault is a tendency to rely on proprietary products for profit. Ask a vintage camera collector if he uses any of his old Kodak cameras. The answer will likely be "hell no!"

This is because most Kodak cameras were made to use propietary Kodak film formats like 620 instead of superior open formats like 120 and 220. I have a Kodak II Tourist bellows camera that collects dust because it uses 620.

My mom's old Instamatic is a another example of this Kodak problem. Her Instamatic 700, which she took around Europe in the 1960s is useless, as it uses a film format Kodak decided to stop making in the late 1980s.

Kodak could be raking in the dough from film sales for these old cameras. They exist in attics and storage boxes by the hundreds of thousands. But Kodak will never see that money, because they themselves chose to stop making the film and nobody makes modern cameras for those formats anyway.

I would agree with you 100% that military spending is wasteful if our weapons weren't so superior to those they are designed to go up against. But they can wipe the floor with the corresponding enemy equipment. There is no contest. Every loss we've experienced in Iraq so far has been the result of a "golden BB" lucky shot.

I can't understand, for instance, why Russia pours any money at all into some of new things with which they're arming. Most of it isn't much more capable than the old 80s stuff.

Ahh, but the chips aren't in there to make the printer function. They're in there to screw the consumer out of being able to use 3rd party printer ink.

I have very little sympathy for the home printer industry. They didn't always run on this fly by night business model. Some peckerhead CEO woke up one morning and decided I shouldn't be able to print more than fifty pages with a $15 printer cartridge. Before this happend I bought a single dot matrix printer ribbon and used it for three or four months of light printing activity.

I don't use my desktop printer at all, and why in the world should I? The cartridges cost a lot, print a small number of pages and dry up if I don't use them within a certain amount of time. If it didn't come free with the computer I wouldn't own it.

If the printer industry wants to adopt an honest money-making business model, they should look to the firearms industry. The gun companies certainly don't try to limit what brand of ammo can be used in their firearms. A gun is chambered for a specific caliber, and that is the end of it. If using a different brand of ammo in the gun caused it to malfunction, the CEOS of these companies would find their asses in jail.

Sure, Kodak was 'the' company. But they were 'the' company one went to for extremely low end family cameras. They've never really attempted to compete in the medium and high end market. Kodak produced one measily SLR camera and it was a failure.

Ask a vintage Super8mm camera collector how many Kodak cameras he has in his collection. The answer will likely be 'none'. This is because Kodak used a lot of low grade plastic parts that should've been made out of metal, resulting in an inability to repair broken machines. More expensive cameras don't have this problem. But Kodak outsold them at the time, and that is what mattered to the stockholders.

He expected us to learn everything backwards and forwards.

Upon transferring to a public school, I was apalled at the simplistic, hand-holding teaching methods most of the science teachers used. They spent the entire school year drudging through elementary things I had covered in two or three weeks during my military school attendance.
