Most countries around the world are not flooded with lawyers like it is here in the U.S.

    Ha!
I recently heard that *half* of all legal books published around the world are in German.
The reason being that German (especially tax) law is so complicated.

Even when this story is only half true it would be remarkable.

Of course there is not necessarilly a lawyer for every book :-)

Rediculous or not, fact is that with 2 generations of peace in the area and the big bad Soviet Bear dead Finland is not in need of a large standing army.
This is no different than in other Western European countries except many of them have scrapped conscription for this reason.
To have soldiers trained for less than 12-18 months does not give you a very good army to begin with.
When I was drafted (in The Netherlands) in the early 70's and with the cold war still going on only 3 out of 10 drafted were actually signed up. Al kinds of excuses were given to send someone home, only the most suited (No, not the best :)) were kept to be trained as solder.

Presently even less conscripts are needed so the Finns have gone the way (like for example the Germans) of decreasing the service period below what is actually usefull from a military standpoint and they are still looking for excuses to send people home!

Yet the infliction is real, we all know of companies end institutions blocking port 80 and of people having been fired for internet abuse in the boss's time.

Yet to a large section of especially the British public you sound credible.
Believe it or not but it is an unholy alliance of the British and French that has till now prevented the European Parliament to get the power a Parliament needs.

Ofcourse all in the name of "Sovereignty" of the National Parliaments/Governements.
But in reality just to keep the European population from setting truly super nationalistic goals through their elected European Parliamentarians.

The powerful Council of Ministers should/could then become like a Second House of Parliament or Senate to reflect on the decisions of the Parliament of all Europeans.

But I'm afraid that as long as the UK with it's presently rediculous press is part of the EU this will not happen, the French governement is tough on this subject but at least the French people could, not being exposed to the British-style gutter press, be convinced to support a European Parliament.
