Yes, it can easily take half-an-hour to reinflate a few truck-sized tyres with a 12-volt "emergency" portable air compressor of the type you see at auto parts stores, Walmart, etc. Those compressor can develop considerable pressure, but delivers appallingly low volume. A bicycle-type pump is faster.
The means, yes, and the will. Either alone is not enough. If history teaches us anything it is that the world is, and always shall be, ruled by force. Those who are willing and able to use it shall have their way with those who cannot or will not.
The EPA is basically meaningless. The powers not explicitly granted to the Federal government by the Constitution are reserved to the states, and the people. 10th Amendment to the Constitution. Perhaps the most important Amendment in that it limits the reach of the Federals.
Unfortunately (for the better part of a century), the Congress has behaved as if there were no restrictions whatsoever on their authority. As if "anything we can dream up, we can do." This is one of those rare times that a federal court seems to understand the Fed (and it's agencies') power is limited.
And no, "regulation of interstate commerce" clause, so often abused, does not grant this authority; It does not give free reign to the Feds to do anything they wish. Practically speaking, the Framers of the Constitution would not construct a careful balance of power, then undo it all with one clause.
Wanted: slave labour. Where? Central Kansas. Skills? Must be experienced with moving 100-tonne blocks of granite hundreds of feet of incline using nothing more than hemp ropes and simple levers. Should be willing to work in summer heat without shelter, food or water (e.g. 'till death mercifully takes you) Pay? none. Benefits? none. Extra consideration given if you can provide your own mummies...
So, Mr. Gates, please explain what the hell happened w/r/t Vista. Are you saying it flopped because you didn't have enough MBAs and bean counters on the team?
Because, it seems the rest of the world believes it's the polar opposite -- too many accountants and business managers making the decisions, and not enough technical solutions.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the combination of tooling, labor, and licensing adds up to close to that amount. Because, as we all know, this is the first time they have ever sold Windows XP and they have to create the entire install and assembly process from scratch and re-engineer their business process to support this extremely rare special case...
2,000 15-bit words of erasable core memory and 36,000 words of read-only ("rope") memory, yet this software helped land men on the moon and got them back to earth!!
How 'bout a shot of the Mars rover, the one that was nearly lost due to a bug, then the VxWorks OS was upgraded from 65 million miles away @ the rate of 2K/sec for three days. "interplanetary roadside assistance!" http://science.howstuffworks.com/mars-rover1.htm Designed to run for 3 months, they've run for YEARS!
If granted, the patent could be used to exclude others from making, using, or selling the 'invention' for 17 years
Not sure I understand your point of view on this one. I consider any legal device that prohibits selling software like Microsoft's to be worthy of praise.
You seem to imply that there is no middle ground. Either the nerds go out & buy Ferraris the week before it all comes crashing down, or they stay on well after it's clear the business model is a failure and bleed the financials dry. Quick death vs. slow bleed. IMO, both of these situations constitutes theft and are immoral.
The third option ("responsible entrepreneur"): Dotcomm-er sees that the business isn't going to pan out and fulfills his duty to the investors by informing them of that fact ASAP, thus allowing them to make an informed decision about whether to close up shop immediately (e.g. liquidate remaining assets), change course, or ride this pony 'till it falls over.
Ironic, isn't it, that the people who "declined to cash out"(read: take investors money and run) are unemployed, while many of those who pocketed the money are employed elsewhere? I would prefer it the other way around.
In case it's not been said before, thank you for having honor and respecting your investors.
He signed the contract. He knew the terms going into it. Exactly. And if the company demands more, he would point back to his contract and say "nope. that's not what I agreed to" and the Actor's Union would back him up. But now that there's money on the table, he wants a reneg.
It doesn't work that way for programmers, Q/A, artists, etc. FAR too many projects start off with modest goals and reasonable timelines, only to hit "crunch time" a couple months into the 18-month schedule when the real scope becomes clear.
I've seen people in the game industry work themselves into the hospital, hallucinate from fatigue, neglect their families, and sacrifice their personal life in order to meet absurd schedules that were mandated long after the initial work agreement. After a cycle or two, they burn out and leave the industry and another starry-eyed crop of newbies takes their place.
Same thought, here! I was picturing this system being adapted to zap those poor schmucks that hold onto the landing gear of jet aircraft. At least they wouldn't have to worry any more about freezing to death at high altitude.

1. I think this bug would be classified "archeological".
2. The question now is what happens to the Samba work-around patches. Now that the bug is fixed, do the patches cause a side-effect (i.e. "a new bug")?
3. This gives rise to a new meme of nerd insults. "You call yourself a programmer? Why I've fixed bugs older than you!" Of course, only one man is entitled to use that line.
Or post a bittorrent link with the word "banned by DMCA" in the title, ensuring it will NEVER go away and may in fact increase distribution by increasing demand.
Mutually Assured Destruction doesn't work with people who WANT TO DIE. Besides, it's easy to make such a substantial gamble with other people's lives.
The fundamentalists running Iraq have stated time and again that they wish to accelerate the return of the 12th Imam (the "hidden Imam") which will signal the end of the earth. This divine saviour ("Mahdi") will appear at the End of Days. Only after chaos and global war will the Mahdi lead Muslims to an era of universal peace.
In other words, the sooner they get on with global war, the sooner they can reach paradise. The Iranian government is trying to acquire the means to carry out this insane vision. They have stated clearly this is their intent, yet the Western world ignores them. Just as we Ignored the words and actions of Germany's socialists until it was too late.
It's not about energy, people. These sand ticks are sitting on one of the ten largest oil deposits in the world.
It's about acquiring nuclear weapons with which they can force their will upon others through threat or action. They have stated time and again they wish to obliterate Israel. Why do you not take them at their word?
>>A world without a USA would be more peaceful and habitable and more moral by anyone's measure.
A pathetic statement on so many levels it's difficult to know where to begin. Are you completely ignorant of modern history? Have you no knowledge of international trade?
Without the USA, the world would starve. You are aware of the volume of US food exports, aren't you? Without the USA, international charity would collapse. The USA is the most charitable nation on earth? Without the USA, the United Nations would close up shop almost immediately. Who do you think funds MOST of the UN activities? Without the USA, REAL fascism of the variety demonstrated across Africa and the Middle-East would rapidly spread into and take root Europe. The economies of Europe would rapidly collapse, seeing that we have effectively been their guardian for the past 50 years, allowing national budgets to be repurposed for things like extravagant social welfare programmes.
I could go on and on, and I could link to facts and figures but you know what -- there's no point. There's no use continuing because I'm quite certain your smug little mind is closed and decided and no amount of reasoning will reach you. So, in closing, go fuck yourself.
So COFEE has been around for 2 years already. Fascinating that we are just hearing about it now. Nah. The facinating part will be the dupe/. post two days from now where everyone will freak out all over again about this MASSIVE SECURITY BREACH OMG!!! PONIES!!!
Other challenges, indeed. Such as surveillance, "trusted" computing, IP "protection", etc.
The new internet will be locked down much tighter, I am certain.

Yes, that was sarcasm.
Agreed. Show what REAL comp-sci is about:

That is what Computer Science is all about!!
A good use? Certainly: It illustrates beautifully that a hardware solution won't solve a social problem nor rescue a flawed business model.

Anything less is irresponsible and criminal.

Gotta look at the prefix: "ant" meaning "not".
IOW, AntLR is a "not LR" parser.
Hey, it made sense when I wrote it.
Redefines the phrase "crumple zone" now, doesn't it?
The gravel-transport trucks will have to update their signs "Stay back 200 feet. Not responsible for windshields or your hoo-hoo."

No sympathy from this corner.
Makes me want to patent an impression of my boot in the rear end of the reviewer who approved this patent.

It's 1st year economics: scarcity creates demand.

Look, if you're going to repeat a lame joke, at least be accurate. It goes like this:
"Java: write once, debug everywhere."
