  1. It's not a PVR on AOL's Mystro TV vs Tivo? · · Score: 1

It works the same way your Top Event, or In Demand with today's latest cable boxes ala the Scientific atlanta Explorer 2xxx series. They're just giving it a new name to glaze it over.

You won't be able to purchase a lifetime subscription, you won't have full control over what you can and can't record, they will probally delete things to free up space for you, and the article quoting tivo is right -- Today's cable networks are already pushing the limits of their bandwidth, just exactly what are they going to do now when 500 people (each one second off from each other) decide to watch $SHOW? They can't multicast it. Everybody in the internet business KNOWS multicast over a unicast medium doesn't work, and is expensive as hell.

  2. Re:Nielsen on Still Hope for Farscape · · Score: 1

Actually, the TiVos -- all of them (except those without service) send back to TiVo what you watch. And, if you know where to look you see a build tag "NEILSEN_LOGGING" in the release version file, much like Red Hat's /etc/redhat-release.

my boycott worked! I decided since farscape is gone now that I wouldn't watch any more scifi unless it was already on the TV (I live with two other geeks). I've told my TiVo that I nolonger receive the SCIFI channel, and now I watch ER and the Discovery channel instead. I absolutely hate not having my science-fiction fix, but what else can I do? I am Richard Harman. I am Farscape.

  5. Buuuut, they broke pilot sync. on Evolution Reaches A New Milestone · · Score: 1

I tried to get gpilotd to work, but it kept segfaulting. This may be because I recently moved to Red Hat 8, (which I plan on nuking and moving back to Red Hat 7) I can't STAND bluecurve and Gnome 2.0. That, and Ximian Desktop refuses to install on Red Hat 8 because Ximian doesn't do Gnome 2.0. Personally, I use Linux more often on my laptop then I do Winbloze 2000, because I have gnumeric, abiword, and evolution. I even purchased the Ximian Exchange Connector for Evolution. What sucks is the connector communicates through the web interface; being slow as balls.

  6. HDTiVo on Slate Predicts The End Of TiVo · · Score: 1

Actually they have looked into it, and have produced atleast one prototype. The Series 2 unit aka "3-chip" is the platform that at some point will support HiDef. The Series 2 TiVo has a PCI bus; and they have specifically stated that they will allow other VARs to drop other devices (eg, HiDef) on to the PCI bus.

I own an IRiver IMP-350 (aka the SlimX) -- You may notice the IMP-100 looks very similar to the AVC SoulPlayer, and the Rio Volt. Reason is, IRiver produces the hardware, and AVC, Rio, and (others) brand the product. Same shit, different colors. The firmware is probally swappable between the 'soulplayer' and the 'IMP-100' and the 'Rio Volt 100'. The main features I love of the IMP-350 are
    • It's the thinnest mp3 cd player out there (it uses those gum-stick batteries seen in minidisk players)
    • Firmware Flashable
    • Supports ID3 tags
    • MP3, AAC, and WMF format compatible (I believe OGG format is in the works, it'e mentioned manual)
    • Backlit in-line remote (like minidisk players again)
    • user definable EQ, with like 5 presets
    • AC adapter, external battery pack, and it charges it's batteries when you tell it to when it's connected to AC.
    • It supports both Rockridge extensions, and M$'s Joliet. I have long filenames on my cds, and they all work perfectly (unlike the other piece of plastic shit I purchased off Spamazon for $160 two years ago)
    • AAAAANNND, a built in FM tuner with presets
Ofcourse there are a bunch more features, and I suggest you read the main product page which includes the specs, what included accessories, and you can BUY it for $149.95 USD.
