The problem with Nvidia drivers is that when you use them for high end open gl rendering (like that the weather channel will be doing) they tend to leak memory and crash. Interestingly enough when using the driver for games, this doesn't happen.
University of Toronto was using GeForce 3's with the Nvidia drivers for their open gl modelling and the memory leak is so bad that they had to reboot every 2 hours. How do I know this? Well I took the support calls from UofT complaining about the problem.
Now image if you were the weather channel using a rendering cluster to do weather mapping. Would you be happy with rebooting your cluster nodes every 2 hours?
This story came out early last week and is just a load of FUD. ADTI has no credibility and is funded by MicroSoft (which Microsoft admitted to).
These are the same guys who claimed that second hand smoke isn't harmful. Their panel of experts contained Scientists and Doctors who had previously been employeed by the Tobacco industry.
Intel, AMD, Dell, Sun, HP/Compaq, VIA, IBM, Creative Labs, Samsung, ATI, Nvidia, Matrox, 3ware, Mylex, 3com, D-Link, etc. all support Linux. Need I list more?
Samsung even makes a Linux only Alpha Motherboard called the UP1500.
How about software companies?
Adobe, IBM, Oracle, Sun, Computer Associates, Apple, Macromedia, Borland, Netscape all produce some linux software. That's a list of some of the biggest software companies in the world.
Well considering that SCO sucked why would they ever want to port it to IA-64. No they didn't by SCO to kill it. It was going to die anyway. They bought it for the Intellectual Property and some of the application software that SCO had developed. Also I understand they were interested in SCO's support division.
World forge is an attempt to create an Opensource MMORPG and has fairly limited play. (You compete at raising pigs). Yes the graphics may be better but the game play is somewhat limited.
This is not true. There are several Linux games that are unique and not knockoffs.
Tuxracer and Hopkins FBI come to mind as excellent games.
The reason games are ported or copied to Linux is because people know them and want to play them. As a Developer, I have a much better chance of selling Quake for Linux than some Linux only game that I have invented.
I would still blame the software. Microsoft could write the installation so that it asks the user to enter a password instead of using the default.
Microsoft software is just insecure. With the expensive licensing costs, why would any intelligent CIO ever use Microsoft Software. Well probably because they get told to.
Another problem is people selling E-commerce solutions based on MS-SQL. Company find canned solutions that are easy to install them resell them despite not being able to do anything more than a basic install with the software. Companies go with the lowest bidder which happens to be these idiots who don't know what they are doing. Sooner or Later their MS-SQL server gets hacked and another 10,000 visa numbers start floating around the internet.
I agree that having a DBA is advisable but using MS SQL isn't.....
This is just a lot of FUD. Currently Linux Windows Managers are an easy transistion from Windows. In fact most Windows users will catch on quickly. The biggest train issue will be the Office Suite. Luckly most office suites tend to be a lot like MS Office in Menus and Commands to the move won't be as hard as expected. No retrain won't be a big problem. The problem will be the fear of moving from Windows to Linux that some of the Employees will have.
Someone needs to slap Versign and Network Solutions. Not only are they under handed and sneaky with the domain renewal notices but the hold on to expired domains for ever. I tried for 4 months to get a domain that expire in December, but they refused to take it out of the registry. Now they claimed that it might have something to do with a legal preceding but I am pretty sure that was complete bull because I worked for the company (now out of business) that had the domain name. All they are trying to do is get me to pay that extra hold fee for soon to be expire domain names. In other words they are holding the domain for randsome.
Versign has a virtual monopoly now in certificate after buying their South African Competitor.
Network Solutions is so easy to high jack domains from that it is a joke. Just send a fax or forged email.
No, it's time to put Versign out of business. I am calling for all/.ers to boycott Versign....
Rusty, what advise do you have for those of use interested in starting up a non-commerical station as a hobby. Is this feasible? Where can we obtain the need information?
Hmm, may be your memory is failing you. The only difference between ADSL and SDSL is that the upload and download speeds are either asyncronous or syncronous. A for Async, S for Sync.
Well, what does that mean? It means that SDSL has the same upload speed as download speed. Where as ADSL has a higher download speed than upload. It is still the same equipment in most cases.
The Download and Upload speeds are configured at the DSLAM for each line by your telco. You can even pay to have them adjust the ratio, if they allow that.
I know about IDE Raid boxes. I sell them for a living. For a NAS box or a fileserver they perform very well and compared to lowend SCSI RAID controllers they do hold their own. But comparied to High End SCSI Raid controllers with battery backup, large caches and the works, they don't compare especially on scsi processor intensive stuff live Raid 5.
If I were building a highend database server, I would definitely use SCSI.
Also as many others have stated, SCSI drives are just plain built better and come with a 5 year warranty. Not only that, IBM and other SCSI drive manufacturers will setup limited runs of older models so that they can replace a failed drive with an exact match which is required in a raid situation. You are going to get that level of service from a IDE manufacturer.
Case=$25. Well that would probably be comparable to a Dell case, your getting crap for a power supply.
Hmm, be gald it works. You should have refused delivery if it's not packed right. What happens if it fails prematurely do to the lack of packing?
Hmm,
Someone's list is out of date.
The like below has some different names.

The Yahoo article discusses how the eclipse starts on Tuesday, June 11 and ends on Monday, June 10. Interesting, eh?
Of Course this is because the moon travels east across the sun and over the international dateline but still.

If you want to keep a consistant os across different platforms, Linux is the way to go. It will also save you a ton in License fees.
Yes but a determined hacker would go get information on CP/M and not let give up so easily.
I remember seeing my site for the first time in IE6. It was designed to look good in Netscape and IE5 but looked like crap in IE6.
Why you ask? Well IE6 had to go and change the default table cell alignment to center from left. Man was that annoying.
Well There's the Civilization: Call to Power (I and II), Civilization III maybe, Total Anihilation, The Red Alert Series.
Some sports games such as EA's NHL series play over the lan.
Other games based on board games as well can be played over the lan such as Risk, Axis and Allies.
Shouldn't that be gophers don't eat lizards but they do eat Internet Explorers.
What manufacturer's don't support it?

How much do you want to bet that 45 percent gap is freeware and/or open source?
How much can you stand to lose?
I know lots of free and open source software is downloaded but come on there's no why that that 45% is all legit downloads.
Kudos to the 12% that admit to illegal activities. Do you really think everyone in the survey is that honest?
He didn't get the girl
I beg to differ.
