So... What Open Source Software fits your bill?

Seems to me "Good Software" is simply software that addresses the problem it was designed to address in as economical a way as possible.

All these other facets are different beings entirely. Scalability? That's part of the problem domain, has nothing to do with how good your software is.... If your app only scales to one user, and you have..... one user.... You have created "Good Software." Software that other people can read is a often considered "good", but that's also outside of the scope of the problem itself, unless you make it part of the scope. Also, just because other people can read it, is not a sufficient condition for "goodness." I have grok'd some of the most disturbing creations of the minds of men while walking through layers of poorly thought out, but easily readable code.

Test Suites themselves are... you realize... "software" so assuming those tests are "good software" then they already satisfy my only requirement (solving the problem economically).

Paying customers have nothing to do with software quality. I'm not even sure where to begin with that.

As for requiring a manager. That is simply laughable.

Point 5 is really the only one that is necessary. You need developers to write the software. You need the developers to understand the problem so that they can create software that addresses it. If you have #5, why is anything else required for "Good Software"?

It's the tooling. Modern languages are essentially equally capable.

The reason Java still has a leg to stand on is Eclipse and its various plugins. When did J2EE get easy to use? It was really when Eclipse tooling for J2ee (and it's alternatives, like Spring) took off that J2EE became a workable solution.

With the tools available, Java is easier to get stuff done with, for the average developer.
