I don't understand how they have held off on doing it for this long. Seems like a frickin gold mine, especially if the fascists in Washington (the left wing hollywood fascists this time) get their way.

I don't know much about the BEA product, but I know that years ago their sales force and customer service was what turned us off of them and to Oracle. Oddly enough, we're just now getting done migrating off of WebLogic to Orion (OC4J/AS). I'd like to think that this will get us the best of both worlds (the support of oracle and the stability of a decent app server product), but I doubt they'll even bother switching WebLogic in. Especially with wedge layers (like Spring) that pretty much make new development for any j2ee container, vendor independant.

Thirdly, all elections are fair and binding. See? A trustworthy corporation stands behind every ballot cast. By questioning the integrity of a corporation you are questioning the integrity of God, Daddy and all of your betters with more money. That kind of thing can have unforseen consequences. Finally, freedom is slavery, and it's most certainly not a concept whereby "people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to daddy a great deal of discretion about what you do."

  16. Re:Former Dell tech a Wingnut? on Dell Issues Laptop Battery Recall · · Score: 1

Perspective is that no one's life is less important than company profits and you will get caught. When there's a clear problem, like hundreds of melted laptops a year, you need to act. The problem is not going to go away until it's fixed. When a third party does something as simple as taking an xray to identify your problem for you, you look very bad.

Well. That just doesn't make business sense.

Company profits are indeed far more important than your life. Shareholders will authorize anything to keep those profits rolling in. It truly is as basic as Tyler Durden lays it out in Fight Club. Cost analysis based on projected lawsuit costs and brand degredation effects are greater than the cost of a recall, ergo, a recall. With cigarettes, the formula did not produce the same answer. A third party was indeed able to do something as simple as take an (chest) xray to identify the problem with that product. Tobacco companies may have looked bad, but not bad enough to damage their bottom line.

Companies have no obligation to act. It's not their responsibility. It is the responsibility of the GOVERNMENT to protect its people. It is the responsibility of companies to extract the greatest amount of profit from the people for its shareholders. These interests are often in opposition (tobacco for instance).

It's good that the bean counters at dell believe that the cost of a recall is less than the cost of not acknolweding the problem, but make no mistake, it is a totally profit driven conclusion.

BP and Shell are in the same boat in my mind.
