I agree. Also, it will be nice to (hopefully) have correct ID3 tags. I look forward to being able to categorize by genre, name, style etc... The biggest worry I would have if I were them is someone RE'ing their file format and ripping all of their stuff to ogg's or mp3's... But then that's why there's a DMCA I suppose... (please do not take the last statement as an endorsement of the DMCA).
Since computers are there to compute and make my life easier by doing repetitive or tedious tasks for me, why the hell would I want a dictionary when my computer will spell check a WHOLE DOCUMENT (if your a bad speller this could save hours), with a click. Can you not afford a computer or something?
Vote with your wallet. Just don't buy them... That's just not practical. Too many people will go ahead and buy these shit CD's anyways. You'd be suprised what a consumer will put up with. "Oh, I have to buy a different CD player to play this new CD. Well, OK." I'm sure NO slashdot reader would EVER aquiesce to some souless corporation. But with an active readership of what, 50K? you're crusade won't even be a blip on the radar... What is needed is proper legislation. But that takes time and effort, much more time and effor than just not buying a cd, or yelling from the rooftops to anyone that will listen (and they'll all be slashdotters), that what's going on is NOT RIGHT...
Now the true dilema. Do I post this AC and avoid Karma detriment? (Wow, a slashdotter who actually cares about Karma? Is there such an animal?)
What is the first principle of engineering psychology (or interface design if I prefer)? "Non standard widgets, which are seen nowhere else, shall not exist?" I'm not a Microsoft fan boy, but face it: Their attention to detail (and consistency) in their interface and their move to write their software for the right hardware, was what put them ahead of linux in user base. Until Linux has a truly user friendly (drooler friendly) interface, (and maybe the designers will have to swallow some pride and COPY microsoft gui behavior in order to get it on enough desktops) it will never gain ground.
inconsistent? The one thing that MS has right now over linux is UI consistency... Before you say "consistently bad" consider that it was good enough to start a monopoly.
Okay... This is your "favorite" essay about latency? Where do I start? That you even HAVE a favorite essay? That this essay is your favorite about latency, implying that you have other favorite essays about other things?
You are definately a Master Geek. I cower in the shadow of your geekdom.
Why relax them? So you can steal someone elses hard work and good intentions and not give back to the community that gave it to you in the first place? Licensing problems aren't why you don't see embedded linux in the marketplace more. Greed is. You may say that, "that is what capitalism is all about," and to you I say, "that's not what Linux is about so stop trying to shoe horn it into a mold it doesn't fit in."
There is no way they can keep me from running my speaker output into my line-in and recording the sound from there. They can't be betting that this will keep people from pirating music. My guess is that there is some kind of value added in addition to the music content, otherwise they're running a glorified ftp site with broken music.
(You could probably also hack in some cronjobs on the server and the workstations to automatically keep all packages up to date, but that's beyond the scope of this comment.)
You might be a geek if... Your comments have "scope."
If your jockstrap is a MS e-JockStrap, it could endanger the propagation of your genetic legacy... Better hack it to run Linux, then you can run jockstrap.enhanceBulge() without fear of a crash...
Hobbyist code does not make it into Real Time Systems, or OS kernels or anywhere important. RMS, Linus et all are not 'college kids living off of mommy and daddy.' They have not put ANYONE out of work. In fact they have created jobs for people who don't want to use Windows, something that I praise them for daily.
There will always be need for 'professional' programmers. Especially if more OSS software is written, because software gets used and modified and maintained. Software is often used to provide a service, and no offense intended to the multitudes of Dairy Queen hackers out othere, but I won't trust them to maintain production code.

I just don't know which monopoly to cheer for!

Ive been sending letters charging them for bandwidth ($50 a pop) if they continue to spam.
How's that working out for you? I've been wondering about how viable this is... I'd be curious to hear the results...
Let's hope not... I can only imagine the impact this will have on the clock making industry...
I'm pretty sure my CS Prof could code Mozilla in 3 lines of APL...
It was called Flourinert actually, and the reason it isn't used is that at high temps it turns into musturd gas... ;)
You know your a geek when a post by Alan Cox is more exciting to you than say, meeting the President.

I know this is the internet, and you can't actually hear me, but I'm groaning out loud right now...
The perceived slowness is inversly proportional to your level of zealotry. You'd be suprised what the die hards will tolerate. ;)
