  2. Mind the mine on How Do YOU Establish a Secure Computing Environment? · · Score: 1

"Do Google and Apple data mine your private mobile phone data for private information?"
Really? You ask that question? Eric Schmidt stated a couple years ago that "Google isn't free- the cost is your information".

Even the US Govt considers your data no longer yours once it leaves your possession. Meaning, no search warrants are required for cloud based data. It's like taking garbage to the curb, it's a free for all.

Not only is your data not secure in the cloud, it's much more attractive target. Little me, "joe smith" is not a target at home, nobody gives rats rump about me... but Google or yahoo or hotmail... that's an exciting target for hackers. If you're data is there, you are now attractive via proxy. They get hacked, your data is compromised.

The problem is, laws haven't in any way kept up with technology. Unfortunately, mega global corporations now generate huge revenue off this broken model.. Thus, in the US anyway, it's now impossible to fix. It takes money to run for office, companies have money, therefore most elected officials are puppets of the corporate world. That's just fact in the US. Laws are not to protect people anymore.. just protect revenue.

Just look at the difference in CEO behavior - Ebay CEO's make millions in pay, Bezos salary is (c) $80K. When I quite selling on ebay, I quite buying there too. If there's anything I need to sell around the house, craigslist does for me.

  4. It's tough and expensive on Ask Slashdot: What Is the Best Way To Become a Rural ISP? · · Score: 1

As some who works for an ISP / CLEC, I have to say it's incredibly expensive. Our largest expenses are capital infrastructure build outs and non-stop upgrades. We've got a 50Gb backbone with 100Mb to residential homes. The fee's, regulations, Government paperwork not to mention non-stop harassment from trolls necessitates a rather substantial legal department. There are Federal grants that can get you going in rural areas, but the reason your connectivity sucks is basic economics... the population doesn't support the infrastructure. Peace and quite comes with price. Sorry.

Light, truth, knowledge and freedom is the only remedy here.

The Corporate bean counters thought, ya, cheaper over there, we save dollars and make more profit... WIN! What the bean-o's miss is that every single job sent is one less customer, and more importantly, one less person who understands the process and can bring innovation into the company. We are now reaping the benefit of that short sighted greed. Ultimately, unless the US realizes the value of on premise intellectualism, this country will continue to devolve to 3rd world status - full of monkeys just smart enough to run the machines, but to dumb to complain or revolt.

There's a line between bleeding edge and a rock solid enviornment that still runs supported software. Assuming that you'll have medicare OR social security to fall back on is folly. At your age, you'll never get back the value of the cost of an education for a masters degree unless you've got the cash sitting around for it. For Profit colleges are making a bundle, prices are skyrocketing as everyone is jumping into advanced degrees hoping for the nirvana of employment. False road trip. The only place that leads is huge debt. That's the next economic bubble is student loan debt. It's going to be a bad one when it blows. Corporate Banking is a doomed animal. Move out while you still can. There's really only 3 ways to have any cashola at retirement time: 1) Get a govie job. My dads a retired Fed who's been retired for almost 25 years. A major percentage of his health care is still paid by Uncle Sam, as is his $60K annual retirement pay with cost of living adjustment. I wish I would have went this route. 2) Health Care job. Get a job in IT in the health care field. It's the one bright spot. Everyone needs health care and the government has mandated EMR (electronic medical records) - few places have implemented completely leaving lots of room for workers. 3) Work for yourself. This is still America. Shed your corporate masters and spread your wings. Lots of luck.
