My company is involved in the JXTA innitiative, and while JXTA is not much to holler about yet, it is on its way. To have a set of protocols that allow not only groups of peers on a network to communicate, but other networks outside that group to interact, is a HUGE step for not only Peer-to-Peer technology, but for networking as a whole. While the jury is still out on the success of JXTA, it is projects like this that will shape the future of networking as a whole.
Personally, I like it. But it will be up to the JXTA community to make it a reality. So far, their is progress, but still a ton of work to do.
...we do need to use their system... with the amount of people already locked up by AOL (AIM, and ICQ users), AOL has us by the balls... I need my ICQ.
AOL needs to be forced to open this up... the FCC failed, the real question is what should be the next course of action.
EXACTLY! By appealing to developers, we can *force* people to upgrade. I'm all for backwards compatability, but speaking as a web developer... Fuckin-A!!!!!! Old Browsers cause me headaches on a daily basis. I have customers demanding "killer" websites, and they still expect them to be viewable on a 3.0 browser! Mention the option of designing Browser specific versions of areas and they FREAK at the added cost. I HOPE this has some effect.
It used to suck to have an "old" system... Now it will REALLY suck!
Heh... now that's funny... oh wait... it's true...
Doh!

Hello??? Windows?
Of course it does!
Did you even read the info???
The JXTA protocol(s) etc are going to be STANDARDS that can be worked into ANY application, regardless of programing language.
Furthermore, I believe, that all comunication (Between Peers, etc) is using XML anyway.
This project is AWESOME!!!!! Finally, a standard for Peer-to-Peer! yay!!!
...you'll have to swith back to MS.
Unless THEY are the ones to go under.... While it is unlikely, it would be an interesting happenstance...
