Well put. The scary part to me is that the day of reckoning isn't when we start to run out of oil. Instead, it is the time when we start declining in our production of oil after reaching a peak. That's going to be the end of what future historians will one day look back and term the 'age of oil'. Sound crazy? Read here and here.

I remember reading in the 'Star Trek:TNG' Compendium that each time the writers wanted to do a major shakeup of the status quo, they were rebuffed by the corporate types who were afraid that to shake things up too much would result in having to send their children to in-state colleges versus Harvard or Yale or ASU.
It is refreshing to see that the Washchsocoicococki Brothers were willing to do something dramatic for story's sake instead of just keeping things like they were in the movie.

  3. Re:unbelievable on Apple to Use Intel Chips? · · Score: 1

While I will agree that there is little a PPC can do that a x86 can't currently do - besides run Mac software at the moment - the likelihood of Apple using x86 chips as their central CPUs is just ludicrous. If this happened, Apple would need to provide support for two seperate code bases in the x86 and the PPC realm. This means two versions of Final Cut Pro, two versions of Xcode, two versions of Motion, etc. This will alienate their current base of customers and serve to wreck what little momentum they have gained in the PC arena.
This is simply a shot across the bow of IBM; you'll NEVER see the x86 version of MacOS X.

I know, I know, in three months, this will be quaint but it used to be - not so long ago - that a terabyte was this massive hill on the horizon. Now - well, not so much.

  5. Oh, please.... on Could Microsoft Buy Red Hat? · · Score: 4, Insightful

There is no way that this is remotely even feasible. Why would Microsoft want to buy Red Hat? Those with their tinfoil hats on would say so that could shut down Red Hat and thus, rid the world of a primary Linux-powered rival. However, think about it - someone would simply take their place - Novell, some corporate entity supporting a Debian or Gentoo distro - and they'd be right back where they started.

Others might think that Microsoft is ready to get into the Linux biz. For those, I have a large iron structure in Paris that I'm trying to get rid of; perhaps you'd be interested in buying?

My readings have discovered that old KJ Il has blown past desperation and nearly into crazy town with respect to what he'll do at any given moment. I think that he is fully capable of being stupid.

  12. Before we all say Mac Mini is the answer on Spam and Spyware Too Much for Some Users · · Score: 2, Insightful

The only problem with the Mac Mini for a home user is that wacky thing we call human nature. For 90% of the home market, computing is a life experience that has trained them to be terrified of change. The very fact that the default Dock setup doesn't have a friendly blue 'E' for Internet Explorer could cause paralysis for those not willing to experiment to see what the computer can do and thus, learn that the compass icon points to a web browser (Safari...duh!) that is superior on many levels than IE.

This can be overcome by geeks like us who hold the hand of new Mac users who we convince to switch - my in-laws WILL be getting a Mac Mini for their next computer or I'll refuse to help them continue cleaning spyware off the system - but how many "normal" people want to learn a seperate OS from the one that they use at work - no matter how much better it may be?

Don't get me wrong - I am sold on the Mac OS X experience and have used a dual-G4/G5 alongside my Windows box for - wow! - five years now. However, I understand that Apple has a huge challenge in front of them. I'm just extremely glad that they've decided to release the Mac Mini so that they can see if the experiment is going to work.

There is absolutely NO way that Steve would let this happen. Apple is EXACTLY where they want to be - they may occupy a niche in the PC market but they are trying -- and succeeding -- at being the BMW/Porsche of personal computing rather than GM. They are making money hand over fist, increasing shareholder wealth at a nice pace, and doing all of this with some kick-ass products. Going to IBM would flark all of that up quicker than fast.

The initial adopters of this platform will be available to afford extra batteries ($45 each) and therefore, the initial crowd of people buying these will not care that the battery will only give them two-three hours of time in graphically intense games. I base this on the early reports that the purchase price for one of these is going to be in the $199 range - this will make the comfortable price of entry for portable Playstation goodness at $300 once a game and extra battery is purchased. Having said this, I certainly hope that Sony is not looking to replace Nintendo at the top of the handheld game machine pile - I can't see a great deal of average parents giving little Johnny or Belinda a $250 toy that wouldn't survive a drop to the floor!!!
