If you can't fix it, you wait patiently for someone who can to fix it and find some other way to contribute in the meantime[1].

This stuff is all standard when the Five Ringed Circus comes to town. Back when Sydney, Australia had its turn in 2000, all the same stuff went on.

When you consider that Australia (the city of Melbourne, Australia strictly speaking), has the highest population of Greek folks of any city in the world outside of Greece (and Sydney isn't too far behind) then you can bet your bottom dollar that there's going to be a fair swag of small "Mom-and-Pop" businesses, corner stores, etc with some form of 'Olypic' in the name.

Our newspapers regularly carried stories of small businesses being steamrollered by IOC Corporation and its hired thugs (by hired thugs, I mean the government of the host country).

Another common story was the officials and security being briefed to look out for spectators and general public wearing promotional gear (hats, t-shirts, etc) from companies that competed with official sponsors. A coca cola t-shirt for example would leave you being offered the choice of handing it over, covering up, or going home.

Despite all the talk of leaving town for the duration, etc, etc, I did end up sticking around (but I didn't get involved in any of the events organised by IOC Corporation). Strangely, Sydney was a really really nice place to be for those two weeks. Many people dreaded the five ringed circus coming to town, but by the time they packed up their tents and their wagons and rolled out of town again, many of the same were sad to see them go.

That ain't no excuse for steam rollering thousands of little people in the name of corporate greed though. IOC Corporation has NOTHING to do with sport, excellence, peace, tradition or ANY of that nice stuff - it's about corporations and hired governments pumping the people for money.

Me, I make careful note of the companies that sponsor IOC Corporation, and put them on my personal do not buy list for life.

Oh, don't get me started on unemployment benefits! I went down that path for a brief period here in Australia a few years ago. The system here, with all the paperwork and justifications is just painful. They want to know about all your bank accounts and stuff too, so if you have a cent to your name, you're not eligible. Save up enough money to pay for registration on a car so you can improve your chances of getting a job by saying "I have a car and I can use it to get to work" and they'll withold your benefits until you've spent that money on surviving.

The Australian unemployment benefits system is designed to kick you down and keep you down - once you're at rock bottom, they do eveything they can to prevent you from getting back up.

    Does the Eject key work?

No, it doesn't. Out of the box, everthing on the 'main' area of the keyboard works except F13 (which, AFAIK, PC keyboards don't have). The Apple keys (one either side of the space bar) map to the Windows keys, control == control, alt/option == alt. There is no 'Windows menu' key (my windoze keyboards have a menu key on the right of the space bar).

The Alt and Apple keys are transposed: On a PC keyboard, the bottom row goes Control|Alt|Win|Space|Alt|Win|Winmenu|Control. On this Apple keyboard, I've got Control|Alt|Apple|Space|Apple|Alt|Control. Takes a few hours of banging the wrong key at the wrong time to get used to it :-)

In the middle set of keys, it's mostly the same. Arrow keys are the same. Delete, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down are all in the same positions. The apple keyboard has a "Help" key in place of the PC "Insert" key and doesn't seem to have any function with windows out of the box.

Print Screen|Scroll Lock|Pause/Break do not exist on the Apple keyboard, but there are F14|F15|F16 in the same locations. They don't seem to have any function out of the box, but I presume they can be remapped.

The numeric keypad is pretty much the same as a PC keyboard, exept that there is a "Clear" key in place of "Num Lock". It functions as "Num Lock" though, so no problems there.

There is an additional row of keys above the numeric keypad, marked with icons for "Volume Down", "Volume Up", "Mute" and "Eject". All but the eject one work out of the box.

Salesdroid said "Zero - there's no drivers for it". (Clearly doesn't know about USB HIDs!). I said "Mind if I try it?".

Whipped out Dell laptop and fired it up. Windows XP detected an "Apple Extended Keyboard" and a "Generic USB Hub", realised that the keyboard was a regular Human Interface Device (HID) and just worked. Apple key == Windows Key. Everything else works. F13-F16 has no function (need to remap some of them to Print Screen and Pause/Break at some point), and even the volume up/down/mute keys work out of the box.

Fired up Gentoo Linux with a 2.6 kernel, it detected it as a "Mitsumi Electric Apple Extended USB Keyboard" and again, just worked.

So yeah... I really really like the slimline minimalist style of this keyboard. Sure, it isn't an IBM/PCKeyboard.com style buckling spring [pckeyboard.com] keyboard, but its a very nice alternative. I think I'll be trying more Apple hardware as the mood strikes.
