Couldn't be all the idiots that have thousands of computers running 24/7. Nor could it be all the fancy electric appliances, dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, garage door openers. Nor could it be the fault of the consumers of not changing energy hogging ways, could it? Nope, its those darned environmentalists. Yep, them green sap suckin eco freaks that live in the woods with no electricity, plumbing, etc. Yep.. its all there fault.
Is that about 20% of the power producing plants in California are suddenly down for 'maintaince'. Shove that up yer power outages...
Power crisis my ass.
that Fraunhofer will keep a tighter lid on this patent, if, and when they are successful. This is good news, tho. I love music, and anything that will let me store gobs and gobs of music on my harddrive, and other places is very welcome.
You're under the wrong assumption that the kernel, or the distributions are responsible for writing hardware drivers. WRONG. Try contacting the company that made your NIC to write a linux driver, or release the specs to the card, so somebody else can. Any hardware manufacturer will understand that drivers are their lifeblood, and should happily write drivers that would sell the product. If not, get another NIC, heck they're only $20....
hmm, you want me to reduce to 800x600 resolution on a 19 inch screen? ya right. I use the highest I can. (1280x 1024) Why should I settle for less screen realestate when I am using linux? And yes, X's non true type fonts hurt my eyes!! ouch!! Why should there be an extra step invloved with getting true type fonts under linux? Thats absurd!! Don't get me wrong, I love linux, but why should I have to scrounge the net looking for the latest patch, digging through XFree's archaic system, editing whatever config files, spending hours installing it, only to see NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER!! FA!!
If people really want linux into the mainstream, where grannies use it... fix XFree!!
I stopped when I bought win2k. Nope, I take that back... actually I use BOTH at the same time.. my firewall runs linux, 2.2.17, thankyoumyuptimeisfinefornow, and win2k to get work done, without straining my eyeballs on the non anti-aliased fonts that the archaic X Free uses.
Unfortunately, these manufacturers have lobbyists and I don't
You make a very good point, my friend. Everything comes down to the fact that the people that make our laws are being bought by the highest bidder. I also own a studio, personal, mind you, but a studio none the less. About 5 years ago, when I went out looking for a DAT, I went to several places, one of them being a 'consumer high fi stereo' place, where the DAT's had 'copy protection', and were several hundred dollars more expensive than the DAT's at the music-gettin' place. What idiot would actually pay more for a product that is crippled? I think something like the article is taking about will ultimately fail, just like consumer DAT's.
Well contrary to your belief, not everyone that uses windows is a gamer. Some of us actually use it for business, to make money. And for me, any relief with the user interface is welcomed. Gnome on windows.. hmmmm, I like the sound of that. As long as it runs on Win2k.
You mean the military votes that Gore's lawyers specifically targeted for disqualification?
No, I mean in the fact that they fought tooth and nail to have a manual recount omitted, saying it was flawed, when in TX, Mr. Bush signed into law, a bill stating that manual recounts are the preferred method in close and contested elections. Those military votes (ones w/o post marks, etc.), in every other election have been thrown out. The fact that they fought tooth and nail to NOT COUNT legal votes!! Whitewash
I hate politics, I really do. and this just takes the cake. The 'Presidency' elected by 500 some odd votes. What a frickin joke.
This whole rigamaroo is an example of how messed up this republic of ours is. Sure, they want you to THINK that your vote counts, but when it comes down to it, it doesn't. Florida is an example of how a vote can be contrived, and controlled by people in power. Is it not suspicious that all this happens in a state where the BROTHER of one of the 'contestants' is the Governor? The Secretary of State, is a Bush campainer, and is in line for an Ambassatorship if Bush wins? BOTH parties are acting like spoiled little children, and the Republicans are seriously hipocritical. Not counting legal votes is a frickin' whitewash!!
It ain't over till the fat lady sings, and I haven't seen any fat ladies.... well, singing anyway.
hmm, I'm not so sure about that. Win9x has a 32 bit kernel there, (C:\windows\system\kernel32.dll)Anyway- it's still a 32 bit kludge, single user, and I bet you'll still be able to get around the 'password' by pushing [ESC].
How can you compare a 16\32 bit, single user, kinda multitasking OS, with a 32 bit, multi-user, multitasking OS? Thats like comparing apples and oranges. If you want an 'even' comparision, compare KDE\GNOME with Win2k.
Oh, ya, they were just comparing the gui (also known as 'frosting'), not the real functionality of the blasted thing.
That depends on the situation, of course. If she has an on going problem with staying in school, friends are getting her in trouble, etc, I wouldn't ask. Of course I would probably consult her, when she started getting into trouble, and let her know of the possibility of intrusion. You have to realize, tho. If she is dealing drugs, and busted, the authorities have the 'right' to confiscate MY house, and possibly arrest ME. Even if I did not know of it.
of a teenager, I have a responsibility and a right to know what my daughter is doing at school. If she is ditching school, I want to know. If she is using the public computers to access porn sites, I want to know. You all can cry all you want about 'invasion of privacy', but when it comes down to it, the parent IS responsible for the actions of their kids. If I suspect she is doing drugs in my house, you bet I am going to 'invade her privacy' and go through her drawers.
The War on Drugs has been a consistently neglected topic in discussions surrounding this federal election.
My question is, do you believe the War on Drugs has been an unqualified success, and if not, what would you change about it if elected president?
Capt. Beyond:
This stupid war on drugs is an utter failure. I would stop it, and take the
money that is now spent on this, and spend it on drug addiction treatment. I would legalize marijuana for recreational uses.
3) Minority Religions...
by Electric Angst
What will you do to protect the rights of athiests and those who hold minority faiths, such as Wicca, Santaria, Shinto, et al?
Capt. Beyond:
I would protect their rights as if they were my own, and fight to the death, anybody that tries to
interfere.
4) electoral reform
by carleton
Some people, especially those that favor '3-rd' party candidates, have called for the ending of the Electoral College system to be replaced by a simple purely popular vote, or at least allowing for splitting the electoral votes by each state. The best recent example was the Bush-Clinton election. Clinton received 43% of the popular vote (but a sufficient majority of the electoral vote), whereas Perot got at least 10% of the popular vote but zero electoral votes. If memory serves, Vermont is the only state which does currently allow for its votes to be split; if someone wins 60% of the Vermont popular vote, they get 2 votes and the 40% candidate gets 1. This in contrast to California, where someone can get 51% of the popular vote, and therefore gets 53 (or whatever it is nowadays) electoral votes. What is your position on this issue?
Capt. Beyond:
I would, 1) reestablish the constitution, and rescind the Act of March 9, 1933. 2)I would abolish the electoral college. Whatta bunch of hoooie that is!!
5)How Do You Feel About Intellectual Property?
by Phil Gregory
In this age of the Internet, intellectual property has become a very important concept to many people. Many companies make their living on the artificial scarcity provided by intellectual property laws, selling information that they have either created or aggregated. Some others, mostly in the Free Software world, make their living seemingly in spite of these laws, selling their services based on information that is freely given.
Do you feel that out current system of intellectual property is a good one? Which parts of it (e.g. trademarks, patents, copyrights) do you feel are well suited to the world of the Internet and which do you think need to be changed (and, if changes are needed, what changes are needed)?
Capt. Beyond:
I would reform the Patient Office, and abolish patients on algorithms, and software.
6) Encryption....
by SquadBoy
Many tech people think that strong encryption is one of the best ways we have to protect freedom both now and for future generations. For example to preserve information that future not so friendly governments may think we don't need to have and to make sure that things we want to have remain private remain private.
Given this what would you do to help preserve our right to privacy through the use of strong encryption? Also in a related question what are your thoughts and what do you plan to do about the fact that we can not export many forms of strong encryption?
Capt. Beyond:
I would require strong encryption. I would end any government monitoring of any communications over the internet.
7) Rising Political Protests
by sterno
In the last year or so we have seen a tremendous escalation in the quantity and size of political protests against globalization and the rising power of corporate multi-nationals. Do you believe that these people have reason to be concerned? If you do believe that they have reason for concern, what steps would you take as president to deal with their concerns?
Capt. Beyond:
I would set up an internet chat room, once a week, to really find out what people are thinking.
8) Asteroid Defenses
by Ethelred Unraed
Would you renew funding of programs to research and develop global defense systems against asteroids or other such threats from space?
Capt. Beyond:
Sure. Give NASA and other space agencies more funding. Although, I believe that about all we could do about any large asteroid, is to monitor. Deflection might be impossible.
9) The Future of the Country, and of Humanity
by 11223
I'm very concerned with the future of the country, and about what our national mission seems to be. Looking back through American history, every period seems to have a defining popular mission - like the "manifest destiny" movement in the 19th century, the Depression, World War II, and the Cold War. During these times, there would be one struggle or idea that captivated the attention of the nation, sort of providing a national mission.
I'm a little confused as I look around today. What is our mission? To me, it seems to be "to watch TV and use the Internet." What would you say the defining national mission of today is? What should it be? Furthermore, how would you show this in your activities as a lawmaker? (For instance, if our national mission is the pursuit of science, then would you increase funding for scientific pursuits in the budget?)
Capt. Beyond:
I think our mission would be to explore space, and would concentrate the country on that.
Lynne Bradley, director of government relations for the American Library Association, says librarians are concerned that the ruling will severely limit the public's ability to quote from digital materials, especially those that are not published in nondigital formats.
It prevents those conducting such research from circumventing technological protection measures in seeking to refer to copyrighted material
I still smaoke as much pot now, as I did when I was in school. But then, again, I was in school way before any stupid, brainwashing, school program such as D.A.R.E. D.A.R.E. to think for yourself. Your government is not there to protect you. Unless, of course, you trust them enough to let them tell you how you should think and feel. Take responsibility for yourself, and your own actions. D.A.R.E. to stop telling people how they should run their lives, and what I constitute as a pursuit of happiness.D.A.R.E. to have some intelligence. "I'm gonna smoke, smoke, smoke my lungs out."
That would not be a good idea. MIR is infested with a green fungus, probably planted, or at least brought up by some space agency whos lift off pads are in a humid, moist, swampy type place. If they docked MIR to zarya, they would end up passing that fungus on to it.
oh, no, no. I guess I just over looked it. And don't forget the USA continuing this imperialism. After the great American Native People's extinctions, we now do it more subtly. We hire other countries to be the thugs, so we can look prim and proper, to the congress people's sponsors (which is NOT the people).
