  1. Re:45% of software features are used on Microsoft Really Doesn't Want You To Buy Office 2019 (venturebeat.com) · · Score: 1

Long known truth: Most software features are never ever ever used.

MS knows it, Adobe knows it, Oracle knows it yet they throw new features out, rebrand the UI, create a new UI layout every 2 years, etc... just as a way to say it's new and shiny so buy the new version.

Here's the brutal truth about added features: they're damned if they do, and damned if they don't. When a new version is released that doesn't have "enough" new functions, it's deemed worthless and doesn't attract upgraders. When a new version has features that a commenter doesn't need/want, the software is now "bloated". Before the subscription days, I've seen the same Photoshop version described as both lacking in new features and suffering from bloat - sometimes by the same reviewer/commenter.

New features give the opportunity to expand the customer base. Removing features can break workflow; for enterprise software, deprecated functionality may persist for several versions to allow users time to migrate.

If we limited software features/functions to those that would be used 100% of the time by every user, Word and Photoshop would have fewer features than Notepad and Paint.

  2. This isn't a bad thing!!!! on Flickr Starts Culling Users' Photos (bbc.com) · · Score: 1

The 1TB upload changed Flickr from a community to a (free as in beer) photo backup service. It's a good cautionary tale about "you get what you pay for" and "the cloud is someone else's computer". The photo sharing aspect drowned under the data hoarders.

SmugMug has been around a long time, and built a solid business around photo sharing and sales. I'm hoping they can reinvigorate Flickr, since I don't use mobile-focused/only platforms (looking at you Instagram).

  3. By 1990 when I was 23, I knew at some point music and movie media would move beyond the optical disc, but I believed it would be in the form of cheap high capacity ROM chipped cartridges the size of a matchbook that would be bought in a store.

You weren't too far off the mark. The "SD" in SD cards is "Secure Digital" - they were designed with DRM for content distribution. That never caught on, and they became on of the standards for removable storage.

  7. First: the Pentax is still a DSLR, not a mirrorless. Apples and oranges.

Nikon made the correct decision. The F mount has a number of limitations, especially with wide-angle and large aperture lenses. The large mount and short flange distance _theoretically_ means most DSLR lenses could work with an adapter (Canon, Pentax, Minolta). I've also read that the Z mount's size may allow for better IBIS.

  8. what surprises me is that everyone else hasn't gotten caught doing this.

With good light (natural or artificial) even smartphone cameras can take astounding shots.

A few years ago photographer did a fashion shoot with the then-new IPhone 3GS. The pictures looked great, because he had thousands of dollars of lighting equipment helping the camera out.

I was a fairly active Orkut user when it came out.

If memory serves, the problem was that language requirements weren't enforced. Apparently Orkut was very popular with Brazilians, so most groups were overrun by Portuguese speakers -- even groups that had English listed as a requirement. English speakers abandoned Orkut, and the platform was forgotten by North American media.

  11. Management's Perception Problem on Ask Slashdot: Are Companies Under-Investing in IT? · · Score: 1

IT is perceived as a combination of the worst parts of HR (intrusive security and rules) and building maintenance (it's easy so anyone could do it).

Management wants to consider everyone as being replaceable _and_ cut costs, making outsourcing, cloud, and SaaS appealing. The devil is in the details: the companies providing these services will be very well protected by their contracts and SLAs. The result is that the outsourcing company will bear little risk for breaches, while the paying company (and it's customers) will bear the full brunt of outages or security gaffes.

I'm sure there are anecdotes about this in personal or professional work. I've seen a major SaaS player - who guarantees uptime and data retention - email businesses effectively stating "We lost your data. Feel free to choose another provider if you don't like it."

  12. Luke and Yoda literally say what the movie is about. I've only seen the movie once, so I'm paraphrasing.

Yoda says that failure is the best teacher. What do the Resistance leads do? They fail, often. Poe shows that he's learned from his mistakes, and I'm sure the others will in the next film.

Luke tells Rey something along the lines of "legends and myths are bullshit." And that's what happens. Snoke is struck down without any backstory. Rey goes from thinking she's the Chosen One to the daughter of smackheads. Canto Bight is full of people cashing in on the legend of good vs. evil. Finn's mission to sneak onto the most powerful ship in the universe is a legend that never sees fruition. Luke doesn't even confront Kylo: it's a fake out.

I switched to Windows and purchased Photoshop (CS5); I was immediately more productive on a new piece of software than I ever had been with GIMP. I (jokingly?) consider my $10/month Photoshop subscription to be a protection fee, so that I don't have to use GIMP again.

I like the idea of the Apple Watch, but there are two significant drawbacks:

    1. Battery life. It needs to be charged every night or every other night

    2. Water Resistance. It might cope with light rain, but not showering, swimming, or heavy rain.

I've got a Pebble (original, revision 3). Depending on what features I use, the battery lasts 5-7 days. The Pebble isn't just water resistant, it's dive rated. The Pebble Time is one-third to one-half the price of the Apple Watch, and shares its killer feature: notifications.

The "Modern" version opens fullscreen, with a small calculator window in the center. So much for being able to use it to add the numbers in another window! (The desktop version behaves correctly) Windows 8.1 changed a decently powerful desktop into a crappy tablet. Using _any_ of the utilities to return the start menu/desktop functionality can fix Microsoft's mistake.
