Well, you're not just paying for the tribune EPG data service there's the element of the fund raising to funnel back funds back into development of OSS projects (in the form of feature bounties/etc)

There's also probably an economy of scale (I'd hope) that if there's a market for this and people find it valuable that as enough people came aboard the price could drop (this is my thining, I have no idea what the official LxMsuite folks are thinking officially)

I'd also hope/think maybe they'd be able to offer listings for other countries at some point if it takes hold.

The main point is that they are providing an alternative you can still use zap2it's free survey driven EPG data or the XMLTV screenscraping utility of your choosing. It is also an interesting proof of concept of a business model of serving the needs of an OSS community directly.

do I think it's at a magic price point? No... do I think there's a real value in offering listing data ala carte to individual consumers? Absolutely. What if (work with me here) you could buy a subscription to alternative Tivo listings, but not from "tivo" and it was cheaper than Tivo?

"Can an HDTV stream be displayed on an SDTV from a myth box via S-Video?"

Yes. It's a little defeatist, but sure it'll work =)

The output via svideo can't be anything but standard defintion. You can display your "desktop" which may be 1024x780 (or what have you) via svideo on your video card but the video card will scale it down standard resolution, interlace it, etc.

Note: you'll still need sufficient horsepower to playback the full HDTV MPEG2 stream, and it'll look good/hdtv-like on your PC monitor, but it'll come out as 480i of your svideo connector.

Which is what you wanted to know, right? My guess is that it'll look marginally better than a regular analog cable encoded source. *shrug*

hope that helps and good luck with your project!

this a pretty neat article about some things to keep in mind when designing a UI with AJAX

It seems that user interaction activities like "saving", can run counter to the way people have been trained to use web sites. People don't believe an action took hold if it happened to quickly. The author of the article linked above actually had to slow down and give lots of visual response to indicate the user's data actually saved (or the user would repeatedly click "save" thinking nothing had happened).

It's not a bad thing, it's just an example of some of the new user design challenges AJAX presents at the same time it gives us a new approach to getting near synchronous web-UI response.

And just for giggles get your AJAX pixel fight on

Even though it's HDTV, the DTV cards aren't that sexy because they involved using rabbit ears and getting broadcast HDTV only. (so no DiscoveryHD or HBO HD)... it's dissapointing (unless you live in an area densely populated with DTV broadcasts, then I guess it's pretty cool).

Before I get the nastygram replies:
On some cable company boxes (depending on whether the HD channels you want are QAM "in the clear" you can get HDTV that way via HDTV card.

There's also firewire transport from digital cable box, which I believe the latest mythtv release has some support for (but again I believe it depends on the roll of the dice on your cable providers settings)
