Like all the other telecomm companies - they were laying fiber which they expected to light in a few years, but still a large percentage of it is dark, and will not be lit anytime soon. Why? Because they all thought that demand for bandwidth would be increasing so fast that noone could keep up, but the rapid increase in demand never came. Sure, the p2p explosion created a small bump, but most of the serious p2p traffic was already there, just using different applications, like IRC. I wouldn't expect great financial things from anyone in the telecomm industry, unless they held thier breath while everyone else was gambling on laying fiber.
In the excelent game, Railroad Tycoon, maglev was one of the options for a train, however, its price tag was far to high to be practical. Only on long trips where the fares were expensive enough to warrant high speed was it practical, even then it was a money losing venture most of the time, as it was difficult to get all the cars full. So, considering that video games are 100% true to life, I don't expect this whole maglev fad to go very far.
So downloading music off of the internet is SAVING them money on promotion? It is absurd that they are so confused about thier business practices that they bitch and moan when people "steal" from them, even when it costs them money to put it on the radio.
What makes you think that the 'string' or whatever you think the universe would colapse to wouldn't contain information which a capable diety would be able to use to create the "universe" at any point in time? I think it is possible that it could, however, I also understand that the converse would be also possible considering what we really know about the super big, the super small, and what happens when both happen at the same time.
Yes, you are largely correct, however, I find that it is preferable on the freeway if everyone is driving the same speed. Then there are fewer lane changes and far less risk of colisions. Lane changes are probally the highest risk of accidents on the freeway, so any measures which help keep that asshole who likes to drive 90 while everyone else is going 70 and the other asshole who drives the speed limit while everyone else is going 90 from deviating from the speed of the trafic flow would be much more valuable. Yes, reaction time is important, but I think that risk of collisions is far more important to minimize.
lets see, at 22 millibits/sec it would take 1000 seconds to get 22 bits. I don't see how this will be a practical form of networking, it would be faster to read hexidecimal over the phone to the other end.
my parents are the same way, they always tell me to see the other side of the issue, the side which wasn't presented. And the fact of the matter is, the side that was presented (what I was talking about) was absolutely correct. I can't count the number of times they told me I was being silly, then they found out from other sources a week later and kept completely silent, as to keep from admitting thier error.
I once applied(if you can call it that) for a job with a company called vector marketing. Basicly the job application/interview process consisted of seeing if some of the applicants in the group could read, if they could, everyone could have a "job" with guaranteed minimum pay - where's the fine print lock key? - for the first month.
They had all the applicants attend a week long two hour a day seminar about the product they sell, cutco knives. They were impressive knives (I still prefer real knives, even if they do go dull sometimes), but they are better than you ultra-uber-kool-ginsu knife.
They never mentioned that each sales person was required to purchase a complete set of thier products for ~$300 until the second to the last day of the seminar. When they mentioned that fact, I left that room before he finished his sentence. No way was I going to spend money doing something which I was only guaranteed partial return on my investment. Besides, I would feel really guilty imposing myself on people who don't want me there trying to sell something to them that they need more than they need another hole in thier head.
I don't understand how this type of business model can be legal, its like spamming, but going about it one person at a time, with a personally addressed spam (phone call). No thank you.
I wouldn't EVER buy something from a company who didn't feel it important to have some sort of a store front, why should I work for a company with no tangibleness.
Your offtopic comment is interesting to me. What percentage of pot heads in the UK do go on to use heroin? I have never seen such a statistic in the US, only how many heroin users have smoked pot.
I think I've seen prior art to this, how about the phone book.
Think about it, the "YELLOW" pages are pay for placement, while in the "WHITE" pages most listings are free, excepting businesses who pay extra high rates on thier local phone bill to have bold and two lines instead of one.
Hello! Does the addition of the word internet make this entirely different or something?
Internet adaptations of widely used ideas in print should not be pattented. The search engine just serves to filter the irrelevant from the relevant, something done in the yellow pages by "CATEGORIZATION", its just the with a search engine, the categorization is much more general and can be both a benifit and a detriment to the quality of the searching experience.
The last thing I want is an interactive tv which I can buy things with the remote controll. Sure, I'm all over having a better picture for watching movies, but don't force feed me please. I know, I am a consummer, and my job is to consume, but please, let me choose if I want to have an interactive TV. All I really want is a hidef tv monitor (not computer monitor, the TV's with no speakers). Leave the consumer choice as to when and how to consume, we all need personal interaction, or we will go crazy.
How are you? Are your kids doing well? Its been a while since we talked, and many things have changed since then. I quit smoking weed, about a month ago, and I haven't felt better in my life. I'm working on quitting smoking cigarettes, but that will be a challenge, as I can't seem to think straight if I don't have one for about 18 hours. I've been shaving my balls, and I tell you, nothing beats it. Nothing. No longer do I have the typical nasty smell that most men have. My girlfriend hasn't paid a damn bit of attention to me sexually, but hopefully that turns around, because I'm getting kind of lonely, even when I am with her. Don't think I am a troll, I am not, I am just writing an open letter to the BLOG. Someone will reply, and the blog will have spoken. Slashdot you see, has a consciousness, somewhat schizoid, but it is a consciousness. I bet there will be ten know it all college freshmen who respond to this, and tell me how its way messed up to shave your scrotum, but I tell them, try it, you will love it. It sucks for the first few days, all itchy and the like, but after that passes it is most pleasurable.
But, I would tolerate a package which manages executable binaries. Keep track of all the binaries on the system and periodicly check bugtraq for problems. No need to refuse to run, that would be silly, but popping of an email to root about the recently discovered hole in openSSH would be not too bad. Its a real pain in the ass to sift through bugtraq looking for things which need fixing, but it wouldn't be too bad to have a program do it for you. At one point in college I was accused of hacking a machine because I notified root that thier glibc from redhat 6.2 had a local root exploit. They never did fix it, because they said it would take to long to rpm --install glibc-xxxxxx.rpm
Sexual anorexia would be compulsively NOT engaging in sex. Just like anorexia the eating disorder is compulsively NOT eating. You see there are two ways to be addicted to sex, you are either addicted to it (nymphomania/setorisis) or you are addicted to the sense of control over your life which you recieve from not having sex. Often times the two are related, and the addict swings from one extreeme to the other. For example, three times a day for a few years, and then not at all for a few years.
What I'm more worried about is the super-rich creating a class of super-stupid laborers. These lower class laborers would work for a cheap meal and tolerate living in a dog cage. They would be intelligent enough to count things, work a field by hand, and do hard labor. There would be no need for the genetic upper class to work, because they have created the genetic middle class to manage the genetic lower class while happily living in the same solitary confienment as the genetic lower class. A few people could manage the whole thing and litteraly rule the whole world. Think about how that would fuck up everything that you have and say that this should be incouraged. It will happen, people will be really designing thier children, but it should not be incouraged.
competition among businesses is an important thing, and microsoft has been allowed to compete on a different level than thier competitors. It would be something like if in a game of poker they were dealt from the face cards only while thier competitor's were given only numbered cards. You can see how they would be kicking the ass of the competition. You can't expect someone holding all the good cards to lay aside the sure win and try to play it the old-skool way.
I think a slightly revised selling system could
totally CRUSH piracy. We all know how nice it is to have pretty books, and tech support, and such, but often times the user doesn't want that stuff, and they just want to be able to install the program and use it. They don't want to pay for tech support that they aren't going to use. Why can't software companies sell downloads of ISO's for a fraction of the cost of the retail version of thier software, but ISO users would be barred from tech support and such. They would be still making thier money, and they would be selling directly to thier customers, and a substantial savings to the customer. Retail stores make HUGE markups just because they can, why can't the software companies sell the isos below the wholesale price of thier products? I would never pirate software again, methinks.

And copious amounts of vitamin THC.

You have to make money every third year.

My 2cents, but I think I have a point here.

Yes, but as TV is addicting, will we be allowed to sue if we ruin ourselves watching it now? With more restrictions should come more rights.

So resizing in photoshop makes it a derivative work? Interesting. Resize to 99.5% and who'd know the difference.

I think the k62 had this problem as well. Anyone know about that?

add another stanza to the poem we call /etc/lilo.conf
It's one of my favorites.
It sure is a good thing that flash streams itself without blocking the rendering of the rest of the page.
A circle with a circut for directing in the center. Operate the traffic cop at high speed and everything is happy.
