    "Mainchi reported on Monday: The storage pool in the No. 4 reactor building has a total of 1,535 fuel rods, or 460 tons of nuclear fuel, in it. The 7-story building itself has suffered great damage, with the storage pool barely intact on the building’s third and fourth floors. The roof has been blown away. If the storage pool breaks and runs dry, the nuclear fuel inside will overheat and explode, causing a massive amount of radioactive substances to spread over a wide area. Both the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and French nuclear energy company Areva have warned about this risk."

    I definitely qualify as a computer nerd.. and I also work on alternative energy science (LENR) as a hobby.. I think SlashDot has drunk the Al Gore kool-ade and most of this AGW stuff is poor conjecture and scare tactics designed to extract more taxes and funnel more taxpayer dollars towards solutions that will not solve the dire warnings predicted.

    The US has spent $80B since 2008 on climate science.. And besides employing a bunch of people and making a few people wealthy, the net result is of no tangible benefit to mankind. A vibrant free market economy requires that the majority of the people produce a real service or product.

    How is this news for nerds? Hell, there is probably a good percent of the slash dot crowd that doesn't even bathe regularly... Really, the alarm over AGW is really not tech related unless any of the following: Its a _real_ crisis (just one little drowning?), 2. something that can be done, 3. or it is actually interesting in a nerdy kind of way...

    If this were a real concern, beachfront property prices would be falling. Islands would be littered with For Sale signs. 1 mm over many decades doesn't mean squat..

    Big shock.. the US as well as most civilized countries ban some types of pornographic materials. Feel free to defend child porn and copyright law as it relates to banning social media. Islamic countries ban porn, bibles, movies, books and non-commercially protected free-speech. My first amendment protected free speech allows me to to "knock" other countries that ban even the simplest forms of free expression.

    Name one church burned in the US (in the last 40 years?) that was burned with tacit state approval. For every example you give, I'll give twenty coming from the "religion of peace". I think that comparatively, our house is in order.

    Your rationale is that even though Bob is a serial killer, Suzie has no right to criticize since she too has killed (by eating a hamburger or stepping on a bug..)

    What popular web sites have been blocked in the US? How many books have been banned vs. any islamic country? Which cartoons have been declared unlawful? Where are the American road signs that say all non-practicing christians must exit the freeway? How many churches have been closed or burned down because with the tacit approval of the state?

    You call me a moron and trash because I take a position against media piracy... That about sums up our differences.

    I am a software developer. People who steal my software are not playing by the rules established by copyright law. I think most people should play by the rules. When enough blatantly disregard the copyright laws, that will eventually cause people to lose their jobs and the quality of available software/media on the market will suffer.

    If I understand you correctly, you believe that piracy (a little, some, or all?) is not wrong and hurts no one. My position is that it does hurt the people who created the content. I don't think you can convince me that your downloading and watching a movie that you would otherwise watch at the theater or on TV with commercials doesn't in a small way hurt the movie industry.

    They have legit downloads of TV shows. With ads. Its called ABC.com and Hulu and and a number of other sites my wife uses. Will people really make an effort to find the legit versions of the shows they want to watch when they're available for free? My guess is no, since BT traffic is not slowing.

    Anyone who claims that BitTorrent has plenty of legitimate uses should be fine with the arrest and conviction of those who use it for illegal purposes.
    But mostly people say this as a weak attempt to protect and defend what is simply the massive theft of intellectual property. It is intellectually dishonest.

    By all accounts, "its too late to stop AGW" -- it can be slowed a few decades by implementing drastic, techno-economic killing solutions. (Reduce consumption of power, transportation, A/C, etc. Essentially spend trillions with the advance knowledge that a small decrease in CO2 output won't do squat. )

    Unless Slashdot writes about a technological breakthrough that can truly make a difference, such as Defkalion's LENR, it doesn't really fit in with the theme of News for Nerds.

    You're missing the point.
    Instead of having the client spend a little more up front for something that already exists and works, I suspect mcmadman wants to kludge together a bunch of code that was designed for something entirely different, and charge for support. (Which is the GNU model for developers who want to make money using free software.) He should be able to milk this project for a year or two, or at least until management gets a clue. Have fun!

    A student can game the system by writing their paper, running it through one or more "grading" systems... and making changes until it comes out an "A". Obviously, you would want to do this in a way that it does this while retaining the content and expected "readability" desired.

    The fact is most "jobs" that humans do will be able to be done by a robot or computer. I can easily envision a future where kids get the best personalized teaching experience from a computer "coach"... who can tailor each kid's lesson much more skillfully than the average teacher trying to teach to 120 kids of a multitude of abilities. Teacher will be left to enforce discipline, dry tears, lead group exercises (as determined by the computer) and smile and wave at the kids as they come and go.

    The T.P. crew drew attention to the problem of fiscally out of control politicians. They helped defeat a number of incumbents who were targeted because of some of their fiscal policies. They helped elect people who were more fiscally responsible than their opponents. One cannot compare two futures with different sets of politicians. But I am sure there are some specific examples of small victories for TPers. But budget changes as severe as ours ($5T debt in less than 40 months?!) will take decades to solve.. and the TP approach is to elect people who are more fiscally conservative.. The alternative solution (more fiscally liberal) may do some things well (spread wealth, make a few people rich, create some jobs?) but I do not have reasons to think under the progressive D's we will have a better economy or reduction in debt. That said, I am not a tea party member or activist... I have too many other projects in my life that to be active in their uphill battle.

    I gave your challenge my best shot in 5 minutes.. Now you complete one of the following:

    I want to reelect liberal Democrats because they will help the economy and our deficit problems by ________. Or,
    I feel the Tea Party is no better than the status quo and we should work to elect ______.

    When Obama took office, the debt was $10.6 Trillion. It is now $15.6 Trillion. The spending from both parties must stop.

    In 2008, Al Gore said "the entire North Polarized cap will disappear in 5 years". This wasn't Gore's talking "off the cuff", he was using predictions from the best scientists in the field.

    If women want to program, they can and do. Many excellent programmers work solo and have very little contact with other programmers.. For many, there is no coder brotherhood... If a woman wants a job as a programmer, all she needs to do is have a demonstrable talent for coding and the ability to stand with her peers. If they want to go solo, they can, as nobody knows or cares about the gender of the coder when buying software. If they want to work in a group of other programmers, they can do that too.. If a candidate has the skills, they get the job.. but what I do see is women with much less desire to spend the huge number hours required to be an excellent programmer. Which is not a slight against women, since by definition it means becoming a hermit in front of a keyboard for countless hours..

    Facts cannot be left-wing or right-wing.. Only right, wrong, incomplete or misleading. The 15 year period of no warming shows that the hockey stick rise in temps have either stopped or taken a break from rising. Which is it? Should we bit wait until the 30 year period is over in 2030 to see if we have more than one data point to go on?

    Most families on the planet are worried about day to day living expenses and decreasing earnings. Of course we are reluctant to throw trillions that we do not have into a problem that may not be real or correctable. Burdening our children and grandchildren to pay for the fiscal irresponsibility of the current generation is a real cause for concern. Far more real and demonstrable than AGW.

    The .gif file that you link to does not clearly show the last 15 years, which is what I refer to. Here is a link to an image that shows no statistical warming in the last 15 years.

    Funny that you need to redefine the term "weather" to mean a 15 year period when faced the debacle of a series of failed predictions...

    I only remind the reader's of NASA's Foremost mission to make a point.. that NASA loses credibility when they stray from putting rockets into space or inventing Tang...
