Anyone who releases the source code, art, build scripts, etc. to their "proprietary" for-sale app shouldn't be surprised when someone compiles it and sells it for less.
If the art was licensed so it couldn't be sold, then a free version of the app would be the next obvious "price point". Which begs the question why on earth the developer chose such a model IF they wanted to make money from the App store. Sounds like the developer should have expected this.
I'm a developer and it is still a problem and still irksome.
When I typed my product name into google the auto complete suggests currently suggests the following pirate related searches:
PRODUCT crack
PRODUCT key
PRODUCT activation code
Every one of those sites leads to a malware site or adware site that definitely does not include keys, activation codes, or cracks.. but are definitely bogus results.
No longer suggested are:
PRODUCT torrent
PRODUCT rapidshare
I think the collective minds of slashdot could come up with something 40 experts have not thought of..
For instance, why not encourage Jakubec to move his chemicals to a place where they can be disposed of rather than burning the house down and not compensating the (innocent) owner?
Why didn't the developers ask to be paid for their service? I love their toolbar and bookmark synching and would gladly pay a yearly fee for it.. $10/$15 year seems fair.:)
Islamist Terrorists have carried out more than 16051 deadly terror attacks since 9/11. (Source http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/)
Often groomed from early childhood to recite hatred towards infidels and that jews are descended from apes and pigs..
It is no wonder that study in the paramilitary arts includes engineering. Realistically, there is not much that can be done to stop this death cult from spreading--and spreading it is.
Does anyone else find it odd that so much discussion is taking place regarding free speech responsibilities for the ISP, while the church's agenda calls for BURNING BOOKS?
They're burning books as a symbolic act, not to deny others the chance to read it. I'm sure the fine pastor has lots of passages from the Koran that he would have you read to reinforce his belief.
Buying an open source project might:
1. Keep the developers from working for a competitor.
2. Keep the developers from suing the purchasing company over some form of GPL violation.
3. Allow the purchasing company to integrate the IP into more products/services
4. Slow the momentum of future open source development of the project (by co-opting the main developers, writing in do-not-compete clauses, etc.)
Why Mr. van Rijn use their proprietary name in his blog post? (Creating Shazam In Java) Of course they are going to respond exactly as they did. And much sooner had he not used it.
Seems like this is a no brainer cause for a C&D letter to help protect their investment.
There is a whole world of code out there and a lot of it is well-commented and reasonably clean.
I personally find it boring to read about programming. Give me a compiler and debugger and let me start setting breakpoints and making changes and see how they affect the code.
Learning by doing works for many. You can find code that interests you to learn on.. But what do I know, I've only been programming for 30 years..
Billion dollar companies I don't aspire to be part of.
I am more interested in the ease or difficulty of using open source software to make my small team of programmers millionaires.
For me, I decided to offer something of value (software) and charge for it. I decided I didn't want to give it away and hope someone pays me to support it. (Well written consumer software shouldn't need a lot of support! Mine certainly doesn't.)
For me, GPL is a poison pill. BSD/MIT licenses make me happy. My customers are happy. My family is happy that I can support them. And I'm very happy I no longer have to work for a billion dollar company.
Comcast is the best deal I know of in the SF Bay Area for cheap high speed access. I have business class comcast internet for my home office that just tested at 70Mbps down and 10Mbs upload. Sure beats paying for the copper equivalent. Fiber would be nice, but not available in my area.
Reminds me of the 4 year old Muslim who shows mommy and daddy a stick figure. The proud parents gush over it and ask who its of.. Of course its Mohammad and they promptly kill their child. The end.
I am building a video player for a shareware product.. It seems like H.264 is supported by every browser I want to support except FireFox, my preferred browser. I really don't care who wins the standards wars, but for someone trying to implement cross-platform/browser video support, FireFox is making my life difficult at the moment.
By the way, the promise of HTML5 video is sweet... add a video to any page with a line of html this simple:

Until it isn't!! Similar to the idiots who steal campaign signs... http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=steals+campaign+signs&aq=f
Not only that.. who says there wouldn't be "due process" to get a site blocked?

Thats just horrible advice.

Here is a video of two rednecks and their method to soak up oil. They make a decent point. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7JkFW5nwMQ (Its plain old straw hay.)
