I think "the little guy" would benefit more with keeping the privacy level as it is, unless "the little guy" is willing to spend money each month on current "free to use" websites and services. Granted, I don't agree about spying on what people are talking about unless you could easily opt-in and opt-out but anonymous tracking shouldn't be against the law. There's no harm by it and people get rewarded at the same time by using a website for free like youtube or slashdot.

Too bad, I really love using analytics. It lets me know where people are going on my site and for how long so I know what they like and don't like. This method is more accurate and less time consuming than bothering people about what they want to see next... I don't see IP addresses inside analytics so there is absolutely no personal information relating to this data. Has she ever used this app before? My ToS discusses about usage of anonymous data with Google Analytics so if someone didn't like it, they could not use the service. Additionally, analytic information provides good scoops on how to advertise to your visitors and if you can't find out information about your visitors in some way, then the age of "free internet" will be gone. I wouldn't mind if websites captured data about my gender, age, and even my favorite food so long as I can keep browsing websites for free. *puts on tinfoil hat* These suggestions about blocking Doubleclick, Analytics and so forth sounds more like people are trying to build a tiered internet system. What a shame.

But you know they don't have any sense of intelligence over at the USPO so they will once again grant this patent as "Universal" and research around the world will now have to list "do not select me" as one of their options to avoid patent infringement. IMO I hope this gets passed and like 50 other blatantly obvious to life patents so there could be even more material to add to a future lawsuit against the patent system so it can either be destroyed or rebooted for modern day use once and for all.

I only get asked if an "older" person works there or if they are new to this country and is insanely afraid of getting fired. In Japan, while selling alcohol in vending machines does exist, there are laws against underage drinking. In many wards, you will notice that you can't buy alcohol at certain times due to the high-activity of students in that area. Additionally, about a year or two ago they began to implement purchases via cellphone so you need to RFID your order and they verify if you're of age. Some vending machines even scan your face to see if your bone structure is that of an adult.

  8. so goodbye google analytics? on Microsoft Adds 'Do Not Track' Option For IE9 · · Score: 1

I feel that this is going to be frowned upon severely if they disable the ability to track users. For example, you don't only use analytics to learn more about how your users interact with your site, or who actually goes there for advertisement slots, but you use this data to better improve your site and to learn how you can improve with your own advertising techniques elsewhere. I strongly advise people to stop using ABP or similar ad-blocking service to sites that they enjoy and don't contain obstrusive ads (ie: popups, pop-under, ads that interrupt what you're doing, and even make loud annoying sounds) because when you block ads, you're basically taking and not giving back to the free service you are using. Servers cost an arm and a leg and especially if you have a big audience. Did you know that slashdot has ads on the site? One of them is about WoW and the other one is a IBM ad. Then on the right side there's a Marketplace and google ad spot.

Let's assume that 60% of the users on /. block ads, that means that only 40% of its users see ads while 60% of them mooch off the content. Realistically, you can get rid of a few advertisement slots if everyone saw ads and come out even. So in reality, you may think that you're doing nothing wrong but you're forcing websites to put even more ads up because they need to compensate for the amount of people who can't see them. However there are some websites that cannot create new ad positions due to their layout so that can affect the quality, quantity and even reliability of the site/service. So kids, be cool and disable ABP on sites you want to support such as Slashdot :)

  9. This is stupid on Corporations Hiring Hooky Hunters · · Score: 1

As many have stated, paying a lump sum to possibly catch someone playing hooky is saddening. When you hire employees you normally try to hire those that you can trust and enjoy seeing around the office, at least in certain industries. When you plan your budget you also take into consideration that every employee will use up their available personal days (and projected new personal days), days off, and holidays that year. This should for the most part be considered as a bonus incentive for the employee to work with you if you say you are offering X amount of paid days off per year. Most people probably save up a few extra days every year to add to the eventual "bonus vacation" but that doesn't translate with sick days so at the end of the year, most companies will say "if you didn't use it, you lost it". When people come to work at my company, I expect them to use up all of their sick days and I don't care if they are or aren't sick, and quite frankly, I would rather they not be sick and use a sick day so they can have a rested day than to have them come to work and be miserable. Happy employees create happy products and overall, your business shouldn't be a place of torture, we should all enjoy each other's company (ideally), just don't use up all your sick days and come to work sick because that won't fly with me at least hahaha. Some corporations just need to get their head out of their own ass sometimes and realize that humans are humans, not money-making robots.

Saying death to the patent system is like screaming bloody murder in a courtroom because suing each other over patent infringement is not just a sport, but an industry.

I dislike the idea of pirating simply because it can potentially take away earnings from the developers and possibly even cost the studio to release feature-less games if they got hit hard the first time around. However, numbers show that loyal gamers (for example) will pay full-price for a game and making $350million on the first day of selling Black Ops, I can say that the studio got more in return just from day 1 alone, and they expect to break $500mil with ease with just this one game. When I buy games on my 360, PS3, or PC, I tend to get addicted to the online features that you get (mostly achievements) when available, and these are the kind of things that properly programmed games won't be able to offer for pirated copies unless there's a underground server hosting it. Currently there is no proof that in the gaming industry at the very least, that people who pirate would have purchased the game if pirating wouldn't be an option. Rather, they would probably in my assumption buy a used game at Gamestop which is about on par with pirating if you think about it. When you buy a used game, the developers don't get royalties, so pirating is roughly the same as buying a used game or borrowing a game from someone in those terms. However, the gaming industry is doing a killing and the A++ titles are often making more money than blockbuster movies now. I will cut my post short from talking about movies, music and stuff but I just want to say that if they want to fight against piracy, they should offer A) service for free like on hulu for those who don't want to pay and B) lowered price in DVD and Bluray titles like $2 for DVD $4 for HD. That would be a great start :)
