It is monetizing it, just not directly. They sell Windows, and if Skype only runs on Windows, they sell more Windows licenses to people who might otherwise be on Mac, Android/Linux.

When a black or Hispanic kid who's family has been here in the US for generations under performs a Mong (Vietnamese) kid who's parents can't speak English, the problem isn't "racism", it is cultural. And tossing more money at black or Hispanic education isn't solving the cultural problem.

There are mandatory tests that take better part of two weeks during every school year. This set of testing does NOTHING for the actual child that takes the test. Nothing. It is for the administrators and politicians to ague over funding. The results do nothing to identify children that are having issues and fixing the problems for those children, it is all to line hats with feathers of people who have nothing to do with actual education.
We have a problem of gathering all sorts of data, categorizing, analyzing and summarizing it with no real purpose that serves the children in the system. I'm in education and IT, and the requirements pushed down by Feds and State regulators is just astounding. It takes several full time people to make sure the "data" is compliant with their reporting standards. That means hundreds of thousands of dollars in salaries and benefits just to record, verify, collate and report data to the state and feds, who only use it for 'reporting' purposes only.
Believe it or not, I actually think that the two ($17,000 / 50%) are linked. If a kid doesn't want to learn, there is NO amount of money or effort that will change it. In this case, the harder you try, the harder it is to make any progress. You can't fix broken people who like being broken. This is a cultural problem.
The only way to fix this is to fix the culture that allows this. Giving it more RAM (from 4 to 8 GB) only delays the problem, from daily to twice a week.
On the otherhand, we have Linux box that has never needed a reboot except when we updated the kernel. It is running LAMP and just keeps chugging.
And I like Win2k8 and the new Powershell is very unix like, and makes running Windows Servers very nice. But still, they are not even in the same class. Getting better, no doubt, but still not there.
So, exactly who does your computer contact to find the address (IP) of the person you're trying to call? Some random other person until you find the person you're looking for? Not to mention the idea of directory poisoning in a distributed environment (think poisoned torrents). While your idea is essentially a good one on paper, it lacks a "phonebook" capability (Directory Service), and security. Skype isn't badly designed from that standpoint.

Whatever "loss" in audio quality there is, isn't noticed by the loss in audio quality due to other factors. That is, unless you can hear the difference in gold plated digital audio cables, then all bets are off.
While it is Windows only, it is solid, offers Android support and just... works. If you're Apple, you're gonna be an Fanboi anyway and use iTunes. If you're on Linux, you'll use some crappy software and feel all superior about not buying DRMed Music from Apple (which doesn't even sell DRMed music any longer).
No, I'm talking about gear being sold RIGHT NOW. Most do not handle IPv6, and those that claim to (like mine) don't actually work right. Your average ARM processor can handle IPv6. IPv6 support should be standard right now, even on low end Routers.
I mean, when I can get a cheap laptop for $299, screen, harddrive, Ram, DVD, mic, cam, and keyboard and OS included, why can't someone figure out how to build a consumer router that supports IPv6 for less than $150. It isn't nearly as complicated.
