Things I've learned about on Slashdot, while waiting for old style shit to get done....
I learned of RIS (WDS) on/. and was getting ready to deploy it when I heard about DriverPacks on/. and then about using MSI based silent installers, and combined them all to now set up a workstation from scratch.
Before I read about such things on Slashdot, I used to run around and use Windows XP CD to install XP by hand, manually typing in Product keys and what not. Four to six hours of babysitting installs. Per computer.
Now, I can RE IMAGE a machine using RIS (WDS) with about 5 mins of tech time. It provides a consistent installation base for all users.
Map "My Documents" to Network Share and now you have a system where I don't care what is wrong with it, I just re-image it. Virus? Don't care. Hardware failure? I don't care. Crappified computer? I don't care.
I don't have to spend hours trying to fix something. Now it takes five to ten minutes of my time, and less than two hours total time to have a fully patched (slipstream patches to the RIS image) and ready system.
So, compared to the former ways of doing things, I now have the time to work on more interesting projects. We can get more done with less people, provide better service and support, and respond quicker to problems and resolve them more quickly.
THAT is just one example of a "how to" found within the comments of/. Oh, BTW, this solution cannot be found anywhere in any training for any certification that I've ever seen.
Solving a real problem with real innovative solutions that requires experience and a bit of creativity.
What good is developing an Application if nobody can find it?
One thing Apple has, and nobody else does, is the ITMS (one stop shopping).
To be honest, I don't trust iWhateverApp from Nicolai the Russian, available for download from whatever shady-fly-by-night.com address, and I don't care what it does.
Slashdot has saved the place I worked more time than I've wasted reading it. I've learned how to do stuff that I would never find reading Tech Manuals and taking classes.
Practical application of practical experience is way better than theoretical classes on optimal situations.
In theory, theory and practice are the same, in practice they are not.
I know that current models show that the brief moments after the BB (relatively speaking), that they had the universe expanding at FTL speeds. But I never understood how on the one hand, Physicists says that nothing can go FTL, and then say the first bit of time after the BB, things were going FTL.
However, there is an interesting theory that suggests that the speed of light is not a constant at all, but has been slowly degrading over the years.
Which actually fits the BB model much better than those who claim C being a constant, except for in the moments after the BB.
The problem with that hypothesis is that it breaks all sorts of things we used to rely upon as being sure. And Scientists are like most people, they don't like big changes.
would it be racist if nobody is being arrested for being "illegal" randomly, but actually because they were... you know... illegal?
Would it be racist if, say a cop pulled someone over for speeding, and they couldn't produce a Driver's License, and couldn't speak English to say... you know.... prove who they were before being let go?
I know, it probably is racist to expect people learn to speak English, like all the Germans, Italians and Chinese before them had to do.
I don't believe people coming here illegally should get a path to citizenship. They should get a path to legal residency and that's it. Citizenship should be reserved for people who follow the rules, and obey the laws. People who have proven that they will break the laws don't deserve to be citizens.
That being said, there is no way we can send 20-40 Million people back without breaking families apart. Impossible.
Here's my version of what needs to be done...
1) Complete the border fence, all 1600 miles or so of it. Nothing else happens before that. I don't care if it works 100%, just as long as it is otherwise effective.
2) Increase Border Agents and security.
3) Once the fence is completed, then on that date, everyone here illegally has to register and get a red card (or any other not green card). Then they are not here illegally any longer. Red Card gives you certain rights and to protect people from persecution. Red card shows path to full and permanent residency status.
4) Red Card members must spend at least 40 hours a year cleaning up the mess in the southwest desert caused by their migration to the US, or some other form of service. In addition, other rules and regulations must be kept for five years.
5) Legal permanent residents get a new card (blue) to indicate that they have fully complied with red card status for a period of five years. People not completing the five year red card program are required to return to their country of origin, no exceptions.
6) Anyone crossing the boarder after the date certain will not be eligible for red card status. No exceptions. Children born to illegal residents (non registered) will be considered as being born in their native land.
This would be hard, but it is fair. It puts all the pressure on those coming here illegally to get "legal". I'm sure that some well meaning liberal bleeding heart will whine about it "not being fair" or some such thing as to why it won't work. But until we actually TRY to get something done, it isn't working as it is now.
Can you breakdown the percentage of people here illegally by geographic origins for me without making it "racial"
NO? I didn't think so.
The problem is, when a great majority of people coming here illegally, are from one geographic region then looking for "illegals" in other areas doesn't make sense (like Wyoming).
I don't have begrudge people south of the boarder coming here at all, and if I lived in the shithole of a country like most of them coming here do, and saw the bright shining light to the north, I'd probably do everything I could to get there too!
At some level, I admire their gumption. But that doesn't negate or equalize the fact that they are breaking US laws coming here without permission.
And I find Mexico's immigration policies completely hypocritical, as they have just as bad of an immigration problem on their southern boarder as the US has on its. Yet they are telling the US not to do exactly what they are doing on their southern boarder.
So, crying racism when it is common sense is simply stupid pendanditry. And the fact that we can't continue "as is" is common sense at this point.
So, until the pro-illegal immigration folks come up with a VIABLE plan (amnesty hasn't worked), that includes Boarder control, people are going to want to do anything and everything to stop the flow of humanity coming in.
Either we are a nation of laws, or we aren't. It is against to law to come here illegally (duh!). We should be arresting those here illegally when we find them. Or we should change the laws.
"anti-authoritarian then you're against unrestrained capitalism and government"
Oh how do we restrain capitalism with a restrained governance?
The two are mutually exclusive. It takes authoritarianism to restrain anything.
Besides, there is nothing wrong with capitalism. Nothing. We aren't in a capitalistic society right now. We are in a corporatism society, which is critically flawed, in that it mostly removes personal responsibility from the capitalism equation.
You see, the "corporation" is a creation of the state, and not capitalism. Therefore if you don't like what we currently have as economic policy, it is because we are closer to fascism than most people think, and are moving closer all the time.
And fascism is closer to socialism than capitalism is by a long shot (government/corporate oligarchy). We've all become pawns of the corporations that fund our elections.
We should assume compromise when we are building security into networked systems.
Anything less would not be diligent in proactive security. And security is always best when it is proactive, and not reactive.
And while it is inconvenient and even possibly insulting to those of use who have decent control over our system(s), we shouldn't base what we do upon our own security, we should be looking towards the weakest link and assume that it does and will continue to exist, and that is a vector for attack.
I didn't say "Liberal Elite" caused the dark ages. I said Elitism did.
ANY time someone claims to know what is best for OTHER people, they are ELITES, and they can be of ANY political or religious background.
You don't know what is best for me any more than I know what is best for you. However I do realize that there are a large number of people who love telling me what I should or should not be doing, most of which is none of their business whatsoever.
Latest case of this is telling me, I have to buy Medical Insurance because... well... quite frankly... I'm too stupid to figure out what is best for me (and all the other stupid people without insurance).
Tell me, who are they to tell me what is best for me? One size fits all is a lie, and I don't have an option to escape the utopian rose tinted glasses of stupid "Progressives" who love to tell everyone what they should be doing.
But then again, I'm just a stupid illiterate mouth breather from flyover country, so what do I know?
Actually, I look at it similarly. Take a decent device and cripple it with cheezy plastic, cheap compentents and otherwise make it ugly and almost useless, and you can charge LESS! Yay!
I've used both netbooks, and the iPad (both briefly) and from what I've seen I'd much rather have an iPad.
Netbooks suck because they are too big to fit in your pocket, and too small to be comfortable to use the damn keyboards. And since you can't actually tuck one in your pocket, you'll have to carry it in... a bag or something. Well at that point you might as well get a regular laptop.
The one's I've touched ALL seem cheesy cheap flimsy. The cheapness and quality are a huge turn off for me. I'd much rather go with something like Blackberry, and if I accidentally drop it, it doesn't break. And a Rugged Laptop is a better option for hazardous usage.
THE only redeeming value in a netbook, is that they are inexpensive. And that shows (see above) in spades.
Come Apple with the iPad and it is just about right. It feels sturdier than netbooks, can be held in one hand, and operated with the other for most things. Its OS was designed for that application.
And if you haven't seen the Kindle app on the iPad, it blows the Kindle away!
All one has to remember is that the iPad is NOT a general purpose computer (like Notebooks). But then again, neither are netbooks, which are trying to be general purpose computers, and sucking at it.
And, unlike Netbooks, iPads don't have to run goofy versions of Linux(what do you mean I can't run ___ Windows App?) or need AV like Windows.
My conclusion is people whining about iPads not doing what they WANT only shows one thing. They are just jealous that iPads just work better than their crappy Netbooks (and Kindle), or are too cheap to buy a real device that just works.
Look, if you think Netbooks are better for you, great, go out and get one. But when you can't do simple stuff like read an ebook or watch a movie without opening a clunky mouse driven interface designed for a real computer (not a handheld portable device), don't run complaining to me.
> no Flash support We are still fracking talking about this? Please.
Which is HILARIOUS coming from/. crowd.
Think about it for a minute. There is a huge contingent of diehard Flash haters here on/. and then you have this post, which decries the lack of Flash on the iPad.
So, which is it? We hate flash, until it is not there, then we hate Apple for removing such a pig ?
Too little, too late. We need probably close to 100 or more Nuclear Plants to get off coal powered ones. And we need to build more Hydro Electic Dams, but that is also held up because of environmentalism. Progress requires sacrifice and hard work.
"Perhaps it's because they're capable of seeing the difference between what a law actually specifies and how it should work in theory, and how the law will end up actually being used in practice?"
No they aren't.
Liberal/Progressives write all sorts of laws that have all sorts of unintended consequences because rose colored glasses aren't reality.
Remember the Luxury Tax from Clinton years, that was quickly repealed because the "rich" suddenly stopped buying "luxury" items like Yachts and put out of work a bunch of normal working class people?
And this "Health Care" thing we just put into place, is wrought full of problems the liberals don't want to address or see.
And Liberal/Progressives don't want to see a fence put up between Mexico and the US because they say that it won't stop illegals from coming, while not ever admitting it will slow them down?
Liberal/Progressives want perfection in everything, but cannot fathom why stuff doesn't work based on ideals.
I often here Liberal/Progressives say things like "It ought to be like __________". Yeah, and if wishes were horses....
Or to put it differently... "In theory, theory and practice are the same, in practice, they are not".
Right, and you have the right to tell people and MAKE them not be selfish, according to YOUR terms and conditions?
Libertarians aren't as selfish as you think. We actually value the LIBERTIES of all people. But if you don't care about liberty and justice for ALL then it doesn't matter. Which is why we have all sorts of special "classes" of protections for people based on arbitrary race/color/creed/sexual orientation/planet of origin.
"the feds could convert all current marriages to civil unions. Problem solved."
No it doesn't solve anything. It is just government intrusion into private matters. Of course that is exactly what both Liberals and Conservatives do. Both want and decry social intervention. Both want government to tell people what to do with their time and money while complaining about government interference in people's private lives.
As much as liberals hate about "legislated morality", they are all about legislating their morality (same with conservatives) like Free Health Care for all.
Of course it is easy to make fun of conservatives, but the reality is both sides are equally silly.
Actually, I don't blame the "church" per se, I blame the idea of Elitism. That only Specialists are allowed to direct the masses, who are nothing more than ignorant peasants.
We have the very same thing going on now, but it isn't "religion" or even "Christianity" doing it, it is the elite liberal establishment, who ignore the obvious when it doesn't suit their agenda.
I'm not saying the church was not to blame here, because it obviously was. However the problem wasn't part of "Christianity" but rather was Elitism.
