That automation has enabled subsistence farmers to become very wealthy in comparison middle class people of today, with cars, high tech cooking, purified bottles of water with flavor, a pocket device that gives you access to the world's knowledge.
And with all that progress, some people are no longer able to do the jobs they used to do.

To gain the experience and education and work ethic needed to be a CEO is much more rare than people like you seem to think. There is a hierarchy of competence that is formed and it is constantly flexible. Call it the Peter Principle if you will. There are all sorts of stories of people walking their way up the chain of command, and the people at the very top must be able to navigate the entire pathway from the start to the top. And the number of people who can navigate that path are few and far between.
While I am 100% sure I could do the job of CEO of a company, I have not yet been able to navigate through the maze. I know my weaknesses in the mid level steps are the reason. I'm fairly certain I know the reasons why, but am unwilling to change in the areas that would be required to advanced.
