Heck I remember sending email over WWIV to a gateway in Alaska that connected to AOL. Since there was a several day delay in transfers of messages from the east coast to Alaska, I would sometimes see the reply from my friend on AOL as many as 5 to 10 days later.
This was because the messages would get routed via dialups that took place late at night between the BBSs to the next node in the next work.
It is a workable system.
And would drive the RIAA slack jaw because the file sharing would not be easy to track.
I miss the offline readers (Actually I still have mine [Blue Wave] around here some place, in this old folder labeled comm. It would even do the dialup for you, etc. Too bad they never got the connect protocol to do TCP/IP...
[...]
I was poking around, and found this page with almost recent (1999) current data regarding offline readers. And this page shows that there are still readers being made in the year 2001 (though many have gone away)
Aw, you're just a gun-loving reactionary! You should be taxed out of existence for your ultra-right-wing ideas.
Of Course in a safe society, we don't need guns and stuff like this.
In a world where every one can trust one another, then we can have peace, and we do not need to provide our own self defense. We would not need to be responsible for our own self defense. Someone else would always be doing the job.
In light of recent events, can you really say that you should trust everyone, and that you trust everone around you utterly with your defense and your rights?
What about certain big businesses? can you trust them? They would love to have total survaillence on their employees.
I merely think that you should be competent in any technology that is needed to survive. This includes self defense and weapons. If you want to be incompetent in a technology, hey it's your life, however short it is.
Let me know when you come back to planet Earth. We might throw a party. Then, we might not.
Unfortunately the most viable one goes right in the opposite direction of the one that public safety and survaillence advocates want.
It is the solution hinted at by the brave actions of the Passengers of Flight 93, who figured out what was happening, and fought back.
It is what is called in the US code of Laws as the un-organized malitia and consists of every adult in the US. It consists of every adult getting trained on self defense, on how to use a weapon, how to apply first aid, how to take care of oneself. It consisists of every adult being able to be responsible for them selves, and the people around them.
This is just the exact opposite direction from the direction some folks want to go.
It is the direct of all citizens taking responsibility for the government and the society, not the government taking reponsibility for the citizens.
Supposed to be that 10 pins are used differently, and some external timing is different.
Depends a bit, I suppose if those features are even implemented on the mother board. They may be unused on some boards, so in which case, you might just get away with it.
After that I'd need the spec sheets with pin outs, etc for both processors. Not that I have the time to pick it apart.
If you live in the area, you can get there this afternoon.
The IG INFORMAL LECTURES will beheld at MIT room 26-100 on Saturday, October 6, 1 pm.
A half-afternoon of improbably funny, informative, brief (10-15 minutes each), high-spirited public lectures:
David Jones (Nature magazine's "Daedalus") will delight and confound everyone and everything.
The 2001 Ig Nobel Prize winners in the fields of Biology, Medicine, Public Health, Economics, and Peace will attempt to explain why they've done what they've done.
This free event is organized in cooperation with the MIT Press Bookstore.
My first impression from the Slash Lead in was that it was motorized, etc. but that is not quite right.
It is not motorized as such. It does limit physical motion to prevent injury.
Otherwise, it is basically a fancy peripheral to a monitor which collects appropriate bio data.
Very useful for rehab, of course, but surprising that someone hadn't come up with something like this before? Or has this been around, and we just never noticed?
The first question in my mind is if this would have a military feel to it, or a corporate suit?
but then I saw this:
"With congressional support, the leaders of our
nation's technology companies could organize
themselves, their employees, and their resources for this purpose," Wyden says. "Medium and small-sized businesses would be able to contribute once a national framework was put in place. The resources from the federal level need not be extensive; people could be designated from existing human resource pools at major" companies, Wyden says. [...] in such times of crisis, about the last thing a company is going to want to have happen is to see their top network architects rush into the nearest restroom and emerge in green fatigues with a camouflage soft-sided laptop briefcase in hand ready to "go to war" while the company's own LAN starts to buck and spit and blow chunks of data out into cyberspace.
If it is not some federally agency, then the rest of the businesses in the country are likely to not support it.
Never mind that the transportation system was also knocked out for a while.
Now for a serious question - what's with the red colour?
The other question is if we are peeking over into the backyard of the next universe over, where stars may be burning out. [smile]
but seriously, all of the stars of about the same age. and there is some red shift going on there.
But they may just be sufficiently small that they never reach bright blue. They may be just big enough to for the reactions to catch, without blowing them apart. and wind up being red.
So if after years of existence BeOS is not yet a mainstream OS, I don't see why I shouldn't call it a "niche OS"! AtheOS on the other part, is likely to become a mainstream.
So what constitues a mainstream OS? what number of users? what number of developers? What market share?
Seriously, How would you define it?
of hand I can think of at several quals, but there have to be more. And these may be messed up.
1) Main population of users is not restricted to a specific location or region. 2) Probably a lot more users than developers User base consists of a substantial fraction of the total user base.
But what counts as substantial? If Apple was just starting, would 10% of the market be considered mainstream?
The natural impulse for techs is to email someone. This is fine when the person is not getting mailbombed by thousands of people, lobby groups, etc. I have seen the recommendation that email is the least effective means of contact your senator, etc.
To some degree this is like writing a resume; when there is a stack of hundreds, you want to be able to make an impact in the first ten or so seconds.
The question is:
What would the most effective means of getting through for the average geek, given the signal to noise ration is probably insanely high for your average Rep or Senator?
Even Neo would have trouble cracking into the system that uses "Triple DES encryption over network, PGP CAST 128 encryption on disk, firewall, [and] intrusion detection."
hopefully not supplied by MS. [joke!]
Although I would not mind knowing what they are actually running for the system. The Initial Press release leads me to believe that it is a home grown proprietary system, probably unix based.
"Nothing takes place in the house, everything takes place in a virtual place,"
Which sort of goes beyond logic. Nothing is going on there? Hardly.
It is sort of like if they were selling video tapes. If they were selling video tapes, they would be subject to postal laws, etc.
There is the actual activity that happens in the house. and then there is the commercial activity that takes palce their.
Of course, by giving out the street address, they are sure to encourage flocks of cars to try to drive on by, people harrassing the girls, and making life uncomfortable in general. In other words, trying to shame them into leaving.
Is it just me or does anyone else think that pushing the limits of rocket design technology at public airshows might not be in the best interests of public safty?
The best thing would be a one way run away from a crowd, say out into a desert.
Just make sure the chutes do not fail.
Sound like something that could be cool out in a place like Death Valley.
I can recall a local ISP (pre internet) that was basically a home business at that point, and had an insane number of modems in the basement. Had to keep the windows open in the winter just for proper coooling, and had no real heating bill. It was all the heat from the computers that kept the house warm.
I think it was Channel One in boston, back when it was a BBS.
There is the off chance that the college students who started Yahoo! had heard of and even watched some of Yahoo Serious's comedy films while in school.
and got the idea for the company name from that.
very hard to prove, of course. completely speculative. but definitely possible.
Even I have heard of Young Einstien, for example. and I don't get out enough.
It killed 200 million people in the 14th century and continues to kill about 3,000 people each year according to the World Health Organization. Some experts are newly worried that the bug could be used as a bio-weapon in light of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Which is why you worry. People playing with bio engineering could come up with a new version that could be very nasty.
Strangely enough, I do recall the proposal to use gasoline for fuel cells, say in cars, for pollution control, etc.
The idea is that you need to have a cheap source of hydrogen and oxegen. And you do not what to use tap water because of the impurities. (never mind that producing a system that could handle impurities would cut the legs from under the Oil Companies)
Any number of complex hydrocarbons could be used as a fuel for such a system. Methane is just one.
And the one that some people like is to derive the hydrogen and carbon from ordinary gasoline. Although this is a wild mix of things, it has the advantadge of that it continues to feed the Oil Companies, and it takes advantadge of the distribution system already in place.
Technology is partly based on the profit center, after all.
A source close to the RIAA told Dotcom Scoop that the RIAA will be joined by The International
Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) [...] in litigation [...]
Typically, when I first read that line this morning I read it as:
The International Federation of the Pornographic Industry
In Farscape, the main character died in the final episode of this season. So it is going to be interesting to see how they continue the show.
Seems to be the big thing to do. Kill off the main character, and see how to return them from the dead. Note Buffy of all things, which is pretty lame in this respect.
At least in Bab5, dead was dead, and was pretty permanent for most characters.
That brought up the quick idea of robots on other OSen.
Made me loose my coffee first thing this morning.
although this has become common in recent years

maybe it is all just a bad dream.
