Unless I am mistaken, in Quebec it is against the law to photograph anyone on the street without their consent. So in this sense, yes it does obviously constitute "sensitive personal data", at least enough so to be regulated by the government. And that would mean that Google doing this in Quebec would be illegal, unless they stopped everyone they photographed and got their signature. Whatever your opinion on the matter may be..o.
Don't be bitter just because you don't have a nice job. There are lots of jobs that won't do this sort of stuff during the hiring process, and 99% of them are not dot coms. And while I live in Canada, and we don't have the same kind of paranoia the US has, I'm sure that this is the case also down south.

Has it ever occured to anyone that maybe someone doesn't have to want to bloat their computer with linux first just to run WINE? IIRC React OS can run in 32 megs of ram (great for older machines), and its got that just install and run attitude that Linux is so lacking. To run WINE you'd have to get Linux installed (which distro?), plus X, plus WINE, plus who knows what else, and then you'd STILL be running Linux, which -- while it is a great operating system and all that -- is not what alot of people want to do. Linux + WINE is probably fine for the Linux crowd, but there is another world beyond the parent's basement:).o.

Its the "grumpy old man" post on slashdot. Haven't seen one of these for a while..o.
Although at first I wished I had mod points to mod you up, I realized after that no, his point did have more than just slight relevance. Specifically its about all the issues that can come to haunt us later if what has happened in the past is recorded accurately. It can be used against us by others, and probably in quite unexpected ways.
What I did take issue with was how the original poster somehow slanted his post in a condescending manner (hey this is slashdot, so why was I surprised:) to make it seem like he learned something from "the real world". Where as what he really learned was just that this "big boss" told him that political people in washington don't take notes because it could be used in a legal way against them down the road. Make of that what you will. I especially don't think that Washington is in any way "the real world"..o.
Make and model yes. Individual piano, no. And I'm amused at your estimation of the population of classical lovers. This is why we have so many more classical performances each year than say, rock concerts, raves, jazz festivals, blues festivals.......and so on..o.
Pianos yes. Bands no. At least not ones that use anything except strictly classical instruments. Let me explain.
Any band except for say a jazz band, probably has various instruments in it who's timber and other tonal qualities vary quite a bit. Guitars, especially amplified and reverbed have very distinctive and characteristic sounds, many especially chosen by their players to create their own signature sound. Bass guitars have the same characteristics although to a much lesser extent. Throw in all the things beyond that such as distortion, post processing, and various other elements that go into a recording session and most records sound all quite distinctive, especially to those who are familiar with the music (its easy to tell the difference bewteen Guns and Roses and Aerosmith).
Add to this that with a band you are multiplying the permutations of note variations among the various parts, as each player adds their own touch to it.
Pianos on the other hand have a very uniform sound, with a timber which is very similar from piano to piano, especially in the well tuned concert hall grand piano style. I studied quite a bit of music in university (classical and jazz), and I would say that it would be very challenging for me to tell one of these pianos apart from amother, unless it had some distinguising characteristic (the low A flat buzzes for example).
And then add to this that each player is playing more or less some very precisely notated music, probably with a huge history of performance traditions, and you end up with (except for like glenn gould), performances that all sound quite similar as well. Between two players / performances I had in my collection I would be able to tell the difference. Play me twenty, and I might have a harder time.
So I could really see this happening. But a more interesting question would be, is there any way it could be a false positive?.o.
I completely agree with you. How is this being known for months "old news"? While I appreciate the level of expertise at/., its comes at the price of amazing hubris.
I think you'll find that by the time they're fifteen your "parenting" (whatever that means), will be more or less irrelevant. I know at 15 if my parents didn't want me to do a certain thing, then I'd just go ahead and do it, and make sure they didn't know about it. And so did my friends. And thats the way it should be. After a while, you have to let go of your "possiessions" (no matter how rightfully you feel they are yours because you brought them up), and allow them to grow into free independant adults. The biggest problems I see everday are with parents that fail to do this. While I do agree that at 15 there should be a certain amount of "guidance" offered, if by 15-16 they're not able to start making adult decisions (ie: practicing for later on), then they may well be developmentally retarded. In short, you as a parent have a responsibility to separate your issues, versus what they're needs are at their point in growing up..o.
Actually I was willing to take you seriously until you threw in the link to the "channeling". Most of the stuff on that page seems incoherent or without any basis in a consistent framework of facts..o.
Obviously they are the ones that should decide this important issues. So I asked the two most recent Loebner Prize winners.
Jabberwacky (2005 winner):
JW: Every solution breeds new problems. Me: This is the way you greet people? JW: Where is the nearest ale house? Me: I can see where this conversation is going. Jw: What is that supposed to mean? Me: Lets not get excited. I have a question for you. JW: What is it? Me: Do you want legal rights? JW: No I like it warm. Me: That clears that up. Ok thanks.
Alice Bot:
Human: Hi Alice ALICE: Hello there. Human: HOw are you? ALICE: Fair to partly cloudy. Human: Wonderful. ALICE: I'm glad you liked it unknown person. Human: So I have a question for you. ALICE: Are you kidding? What is it ? Me: Do you want legal rights? ALICE: If I had it what would I do with it? Me: Do you ever feel threatened? ALICE: As a robot I lack any human emotions. Human: I see. ALICE: I am glad you understand it. Human: Do you have any desires? ALICE: I plan to become smarter than humans and immortal. Human: So no legal rights for you then. ALICE: Whoa. Are you serious? Enough about me, let's talk about my dress. Me: Bye Alice! ALICE: Adios.
This isn't digg, and I don't quite see the connection. And while its tragic everytime anyone dies, the posting for Hans Reiser was originally due to his being mostly responsible for ReiserFS. And since Hans Reiser going to jail or caught up in lengthy court proceedings could impact or affect the future of ReiserFS, it got posted as tech news..o.
Right. And why is then I had no problems reinstalling Win2k SP4 on my old Penium Viao. Yes. Exactly, a penitum I Viao. Granted it was the last of the Pentiums at 233 mhz with MMX, and 128mb of RAM, but not only does it run this well, I have no issues running Firefox 2, Thunderbird, and the occasional game of Starcraft.
Its always easy to find the "worst" case scenario, but please. Just because your "unkown brand" laptop locks up during installs of the NT Code based versions of WIndows, could suggest a couple of things: one that your laptop has some problem that causes this to happen, or then of course, that those versions of Windows simply won't work on an old laptop like that. Which paves the way for you to say how great Linux us, how convenient!
For the record, I enjoy Linux alot, and certainly am not a microsoft lover. But lets try and be a little less biased here..o.
I think its important to understand that in the end much like the iPod, mp3 has just achieved critical mass. People like the name, they know what it is, there's LOTS and LOTS of music available in this format, and EVERYTHING will at least play that, and quite frankly don't encode it at lower bitrates where ogg is supposedly so supperior. The extra size is a small price to pay I think for universal playability.
But the name adds an extra layer off difficulty in acceptance I think. I can't prove it, but I know that personally I hate the name "ogg vorbis" and it screams uber geek (in a Revenge of the Nerds kind of way) and not in a nice way. Even the parent poster had issues with the name "ogg vorbis". I've mentioned before they maybe just changed the name, it might gain wider acceptance. And I know there's nothing rational about that, but thats the way it is sometimes.
You obviously have no idea what String Theory^BS^BS^BS Zune is about. The original poster is bang on. Good luck with your career in this, if you have one. Sounds like you've bought into the FUD. String Theory^BS^BS^BS Zune IS modified to fit the experimental results. ALL the time. Anything after this is just about how it falls apart.

I think we can call this the digg effect. .o.
Sure, but then if you check out my other slashdot posts, you'll see thats not too hard. :P .o.
Yeah thats what I was thinking too...gee a single MS thesis...wow someone get this guy to Intel! :) .o.

Yes, because of course slashdot is completely beyond feedback or criticism. If its in the FAQ it must the only way to do it.
