It's less about being scared of the alleged 'boogie man' than it is about being realistic. Alot of things can happen when the average police response times between 5 and 10 minutes [http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cvus/previous/cvus107.pdf]. Assuming an AK-47 is makes for the best defense ever is absurd. A moderate caliber handgun (between 9mm and.45) is sufficient for protecting oneself between the 911 call and the police showing up.
On the subject of being realistic, using an AK-47 for home defense is just dumb. A 7.62x39 bullet has way too much penetration potential! You run the risk of shooting through both interior walls, some exterior walls, and into neighboring structures.
... but realistically the situations where a firearm is useful for self defense where 6 shots isn't enough is rather unusual. And ultimately the result of overpowered weapons having been created for the small penis set in the first place.

I want to apologize for the childish actions of my fellow Texans that would setup and sign such a petition. Their actions do not reflect the wishes and nature of Texans as a whole. I wish they would go buy a Caribbean island (not sending them south...Mexico doesn't deserve that) and start their own 'country', if they feel they can run something like that. I would like to remind my fellow Texans that following the war for independence from Mexico we were barely a republic and really wanted to become a state, only staying a republic for about 10 years due to the United States wanting to avoid war with Mexico. It is important to note that US troops fought and died against Mexico to annex Texas ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Texas_(1845%E2%80%931860) ).
We recently implemented a Hyper-V server which we named Grid and all of the virtual servers running on 'Grid' are named after characters from the Tron movies. (Flynn lives!)
