Why does everyone jump on slashdot for EVERY story they post? Why does everything have to be a huge conspiracy? I'm as paranoid as the next guy, but if slashdot seals out, what business is it of ours? We just find another site or start it ourselves. Just my point of view.

Serena was on the radio here in Atlanta before the special aired last week. I personally have alot of respect for her after the interview. She want's MTV to do serious news as it relates to modern youth culture (MTV's target audience). We can't fault her for not knowing wether she was being put on or not. Admitedly some peer review was probably in order but if something like this were peer reviewable they wouldn't need to do a special on it. She talked of high hopes for the special and that it opened her eyes to alot of issues. She could not have known better. If someone DID know better the special probably would have been yanked. Not a Serena Auchult fan by any stretch but no need in people blasting her when she was just the person they had do the special. Did anyone catch the true life special she did last year on heroin use? THAT ,IMHO, was an excellent piece.

This is a good point too. I'm the network admin at the company I work at. We're nothing big so alow of tasks that belong to other parts of the IS team at big companies are mine at this one. My feeling is that, as managers and directors, once we let the people above us who are responsible for licensing know that they are non compliant, our job is done. Of course we are fully compliant because we use maybe 2 MS products that aren't licensed out of our parent company and we took care of those licenses ourselves. The rest of our stuff is GPL'd or BSD'd.

I havea feeling with more and more mainstream desktop usage we, as the experienced users, are going to be getting more and more of these confused comments. We houls be prepared to instuct with gentle hands and not blast people for something that could be confusing.

    For clarification:
WindowMaker, E, KWM, FVWM, Blackbox and similar are windowmanagers. Windowmanagers control placement of windows, decoration of titlebars and such.

gnome/kde are desktop environments. It sounds confusing but it's not. Gnome/KDE applications each have a common look and feel to them. Wether it be QT with kde or GTK with gnome. The only difference between kde/gnome other than the look is that kde comes with its own WindowManager (defined above). If anyone wants to add to this I can set up a webpage that has information on this somewhere. It seems rather important to me. Maybe a page for newbies with common misconceptions they may have?
