Well, if you read your Chinese history books, you'll find that China was conquered by the Mongols (Yuan Dynasty 1279-1368) and the Manchu (Qing Dynasty 1644-1912), both of whom spoke totally different languages. The spoken language in China today is substantially different from the spoken language that we can reconstruct for say 600AD. Indeed there isn't even one spoken language today; Chinese people in different parts of the country speak many different languages (Min, Wu, Yue, Gan, etc) but most are written with the same script)
Kepler is literally writing those first few galactic database entries for us. Some years from now, be it years, decades, or centuries, when our ancestors are poking around other solar systems, they are going to be pulling up a few scant words describing the likely surface composition and climate data of some of these planets. They will pull up the mass estimates and other numbers associated with each body before dropping onto the surface of the planet to update/verify the database. They will literally be using the information gathered by Kepler and its successors to give them some insight about what they are going to step into.
... and then they will click by unthinkingly so they can go and blow some shit up.
On the contrary, it's Western alphabetic systems that become difficult to read over time. Because they write the sound, when the sound changes, the written word has to change. You may not find Shakespeare too difficult, but try Chaucer and you will probably struggle. Try reading an Anglo-Saxon tale like Beowulf and you will most likely understand next to nothing. But because the Chinese system writes the meaning and not the sound, when the sound changes, the character stays the same. Even I, a stupid foreigner, can pick up a book of poems from the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD) and read it without much more difficulty than a modern book.
Once you know the simplified characters, it really isn't much of a stretch to figure out the traditional characters. Many characters are identical in both systems and those that have been changed have generally followed a fairly consistent set of rules. Reading the traditional characters on the songs from Taiwan at the karaoke doesn't take a huge effort (I believe this is probably the main way in which the traditional characters are being kept alive on the mainland).
That's right, this may have escaped your notice in the USA, where the culture has made the transition directly from barbarism to decadence without going through an intervening period of civilization.
I find the most intriguing part of this whole thing is the decision to outsource the chips to a Dutch company. I wonder how long it will be before all the RFIDs fail and send only a message saying "Give us our bikes back".
Exactly. This is why I always give a very wide berth to Volvo drivers. They seem to believe that because their car is built to be very safe, this means that they can drive more dangerously to compensate. As a result, they take more risks, do more stupid stuff and cause more collisions and injuries to other road users. A few years back, a psychology department did some research on driver behaviour and confirmed my long-standing fear of Volvos. Basically they put people in a driving simulator seated in a variety of differently designed driver's seat environments. The people who were given the safest-feeling car, basically a kind of Sherman tank with a padded dashboard set-up, compensated by driving most dangerously. The people who were put in a car made out of chicken-wire and cardboard, with a 12 inch spike in the middle of the steering wheel, consistently drove safely and politely with consideration for other road users.
All a "zero fatality" car will do is bring out the worst in people who will now drive like they are invulnerable and proceed to mow down pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and anyone in "normal" cars with impunity.
You've obviously never done an install of NetWare 4. As those with experience will tell you, sacrificing a black cockerel on the night of a full moon was the only way to get it up and running.
Whenever I hear this kind of argument, often phrased in terms of "Would you rather fight them in Pasadena?", I can't help thinking to myself, "Maybe we could *beat* them in Pasadena".
If this is configurable, there are truly a myriad applications. Right-wing Republican?... just erase Obama from your world. Dutch football fan?... pretend Spain never existed. Global warming denialist?... evidence not a problem. Custom-made paradise beckons. The marketing possibilities are endless.
If the command centre operator cannot identify possible intruders through the robot's audio or video communications system, the operator can order it to fire
I sure hope that "cannot" instead of "can" is a misprint or journalistic license. Or did the South Koreans learn their rules of engagement from watching war movies?
... going... Gone Daddy
They don't need an antenna. They just need to hold them in the right way.
Now I understand why the Scots offer you "a wee dram"
Same thing

Should Apple sue Intel over their i7 Core stuff?
First, Apple should sue Intel over the use of the word "Core". I mean, it's obvious that the words "apple" and "core" are inextricably linked.
If they win that one, then they can go after the Marine Corps.
I'm getting jolly sick of this Shi'ite too.

I passed all the tests to join the Intelligence Core
Makes me wonder how stringent the tests were. Especially the English tests.
Those suppositories you gave me tasted really terrible, doctor. And for all the good they've done me I might as well have shoved them up my ass.
That's only because Noddy won't pay the ransom.

Apple are currently having manufacturing challenges with the white labs, but they'll be available to the public later this year.

guess I'll have to buy the White Album again...
Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

That would be a fruit lozenge then?
Wrong! Grammar exists to help describe the way English is used. It does not prescribe the way to speak. Mod grandparent up.
