It's not just Bing that lit the fire under Google that helped make this happen, Facebook is actually their most potent threat - wrote about it here. They're challenging Google for ad revenue, for search, for email, the list goes on. I saw some pretty compelling discussion on Twitter speculating about how long till Facebook comes out with their own browser.

So the question I have is, will we see a Facebook superbowl ad next year?

Right - communications off island provided by Ericsson? I don't think so. That and hams aren't trying to provide emergency communications forever- fundamentally they really are just there because they have radios and they hear people asking for help- if you had one and you heard someone asking for help would you respond? That's how it goes and that's basically how amateur radio helps out in disasters. Ham radios are everywhere - when disaster strikes the closest working radio is fired up and whoever hears the call from that radio on the other side does whatever they can do to help the person making the call. It's that simple.

  12. Who's fault is it? on Google Sued Over Privacy Invasion On Street View · · Score: 3, Informative

I dunno it seems like a case of bad judgment on the driver of the mapping vehicle. If you look at the pictures it seems like they drove right up to their garage, taking pictures the whole time.

It also seems like provider of the maps is also at fault, if you follow along on Google maps you can see that the street appears to extend all the way to their garage.

But, there doesn't seem to be any "private road" labeling on the map nor was their any sign visible when I followed the street via Streetview to their house (though they did delete the offending pictures, so maybe the sign was there?)

Regardless though, I would expect that the drivers of these vehicles would know better then to keep the pictures they took of a property while parked in front of a garage.

  13. Iapetus predicticus on Cassini's Iapetus Flyby · · Score: 1

I recall reading this in a relatively recent edition of 2001- very cool stuff: (from wikipedia) - In Arthur C. Clarke's novel 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), astronaut Dave Bowman finds an enigmatic alien monolith waiting for him on the surface of Iapetus. Iapetus' two tone coloration is caused by a vast white ellipse on the moon's surface, with the monolith appearing as a black dot in its exact center. When the Voyager space probes arrived at Iapetus thirteen years later, they discovered that there was indeed a black region within the moon's brighter hemisphere. Clarke reports that Carl Sagan, who was on the Voyager imaging team, sent him a photo, with the note "Thinking of you ...". Because of difficulties achieving a convincing model of Saturn's rings, the film version of 2001: A Space Odyssey relocated the monolith to an orbit around Jupiter.

SO- what I'm saying, is that Libertarians and Ron Paul do not support net neutrality - which seems counter to most of the /. crowd, however it also seems most of the /. crowd is more libertarian minded, so therefore we must have a Nintendo/Apple thing going on here. There is some irrational, unexplained connection that's happening and I think the poster is right to wonder why.

I too am interested, I think that other posters have done a good job making a connection, but I think it's gotta be more then what has been discussed so far...

Can't wait to see the live shows-- did you see this?

On April 18, 2007, Open Source Resistance hosted a gathering in LA. Musicians, artists, and ordinary people gathered in support of a simple message: speak up to defend the things that matter to you. The concert planned to end the evening was broken up by police. -- that link contains a video of the gathering and the concert that followed.. DIGG's coverage of the event is also worth noting.

That website, open source restance, is part of the ARG as was the event I think- if this is an indication of what the live shows might be like then holy crap, sign me up! :P
