  1. Except... on Scientology Tries To Block German Documentary · · Score: 1

    It is not a documentary.
Once again, the error in the summary has managed to misinform and confuse thousands of Slashdotters.

    From TFA:

A new German TV movie tells the story of a man whose family life was destroyed after joining the Church of Scientology.
The drama, which is based on a true story, was filmed in secret to prevent the organization taking legal action against the project.
    .
    .
The drama will air on March 31 under the title "Until Nothing Is Left."
This will be the first German feature film about Scientology, the first drama to use the controversial belief system as evening entertainment.

So, they are not EXACTLY "just being candid".
On the other hand, just because something is a documentary, that does not mean that it is true.
See Operation Lune (Dark Side of the Moon) for an excellent example of how to twist actual events and interviews out of a contest in order to present "your version of the truth".

  6. Re:Stupid on Pi Day and an Interview With a Pi Researcher · · Score: 1

Meter and the metric system are human attempts to bring some order into the chaos of the imperial system.
As there is a single ruling body that determines the length of a meter they could just as well have had it twice as long it would make nearly no difference.
It would still be more practical and more precise than the imperial system.

    Why is it more precise?
Because it is determined by a single ruling body, because its properties can be based on unchangeable measurable properties of atomic particles AND artifacts created by the aforementioned ruling body AND certain aspects of the planet we live on, because its smallest unit is small enough that the differences in measurement of the aforementioned properties and artifacts are negligible in practical use.

On the other hand, inch, foot, yard, mile (all those different flavors of it) are traditional and archaic SELF-DESCRIPTIVE units that have up until recently varied from village to village, let alone country to country.
Kings and queens used to sign a document declaring "exactly" how long an inch or a foot was - but they've never used an actual "yardstick" to determine the actual length of any.
Or a prototype standard if you like it more like that.
Same with the pounds and those other units that come out to 1276.386 of some other unit.
An inch is still called "a thumb" in many non English speaking countries - because that is what it was based on. Width of an average thumb.
You know... like the foot was based on an actual human "foot".

    Why is it more practical?
Cause it is simple. It is just increments of 10.
    1, 10, 1000, 1000000... or 10^-3, 10^-2, 10^1, 10^2, 10^3...
Scale it up or down it is always the same. You just move the decimal point.
Just try expressing something like 2.356 inches in yards or feet by just moving a decimal point.

Also, another thing you can't do with pounds and inches.
Make a cube that is exactly 10 centimeters (100 millimeters, 1 decimeter, 0.1 meter) long on each side.
That cube will hold 1 kilogram of water. Which is also exactly 1 liter of water.
    Cool, right?
Well, that is what you get when you actually take time to come up with a new measurement system that makes sense instead of just "determining" that it is "about that much".

Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan of Norene, Tenn., shot herself Sunday night after her stepfather left his loaded Smith & Wesson handgun out on a table, Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe said.

Cheyenne's mother told police officers that the child was used to playing a shooting game with the Nintendo Wii video game console and likely confused the real gun with the realistic-looking black toy gun, the sheriff said.

    Not his offspring.
And I just love how the child's mother jumped to suggest the possibility that the kid confused the real gun with a toy - defending her man. And herself.

Cheyenne's stepfather, Douglas Cronberger, 32, owned a semi-automatic pistol that he normally kept in a secure location, out of the reach of Cheyenne and the couple's 1-year-old child, Ashe said.
But after taking it out to investigate a possible prowler, Cronberger left it on a table and forgot about it, officials said.

When Cheyenne fired the gun, Ashe said, her mother, Tina Ann Cronberger, 32, was within three feet of her child.
Cheyenne was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

You see officer, I was about to shoot someone lurking in the bushes. Turns out it was just the wind. So I left the gun on the coffee table. Just in case. Aaand... I forgot about it.
And my wife is so used to our kids holding guns, she didn't even bother to move when her daughter picked it up.
Don't worry. We will be more careful with the spare child.

Actually, that is how everything is done. Since about the time of industrial revolution.

You design for the best possible, then you cut that down to a cheaper version by saving on the number of components and "extras" that were intended to be a part of the package in the first place.
Also, replace components with cheaper ones if possible.

Why sell a product worth X money for X money, when you can make a product worth X - Y and sell it for X, while marketing it like a product actually worth X.

Pay close attention to PSUs 12V amperage - don't buy cheap Chinese ones that have hundreds of theoretical Watts but give only about 20 Amps on 12V.
12V is for all of your coolers, hard-drives (including external ones), optical drives and anything else you attach to it that has a motor or movable parts.
Buy ULTRA or Corsair (if you can't afford a ULTRA).

With motherboards, pay extra for the Deluxe or Pro model - however they call it.
Compare it to the "regular" version of the motherboard.
