If you read some of the SF that was illustrated by those pictures, you'll find out that in most of them - its one united communist world.

And not just any communist world. Its makes Star Trek with its space battles and wars seem like a second rate utopia.
Capitalism, hunger, disease, wars, borders, ignorance - all of that is extinct.

On the other hand, some visions were quite... bizarre.

I remember reading this book where soviet (as in Soviet Earth) cosmonauts are on a mission to some far away planet or other and along the way they stumble upon a earlier era.
It is not explicitly mentioned, but it is obvious that what they find is a US military starship. The crew was dead because of the inadequate radiation protection or something.
But the part that was most amusing was how cosmonauts reacted to pin-up posters on the walls.
From not understanding the purpose of posters of naked women on the walls, to questions like why are their lips and nails painted red.

Now... a utopia where people don't understand the concept of disease or capitalism... OK.
But one where they don't know about porn and makeup?

Riiiight... I guess they also forgot how to make beer.

    WTF is a "barn burner"?

Also, saying "Office-based test script was "statistically insignificant,"...while a multitasking test panel produced results for SP1 less than 1% faster than RTM." doesn't really say much.

Adding to that the first (T)FA actually bothered to mention WHAT was the RC about...

Instead, Microsoft says, the service pack beta improves stability, performance, and reliability when reactivating a machine from Hibernate or Suspend mode; enhances device-driver support; increases security; and adds support for new standards such as Extended File Allocation Table (intended to enhance flash storage on notebooks, not desktops). ... kinda makes this (T)FA even more non-informative in comparison.

    From the TFA:

As a drill instructor barked orders, Chang-hoon and 17 other boys marched through a cold autumn rain to the obstacle course.
Wet and shivering, Chang-hoon began climbing the first obstacle, a telephone pole with small metal rungs.
At the top, he slowly stood up, legs quaking, arms outstretched for balance.
Below, the other boys held a safety rope attached to a harness on his chest.

"Do you have anything to tell your mother?" the drill instructor shouted from below.

    "No!" he yelled back.

"Tell your mother you love her!" ordered the instructor.

"I love you, my parents!" he replied. You see? The problem these kids have is really that when on the internetz they don't get to climb telephone polls shouting "Mom I love you!".
    Riiight.
The problem, once again, is in the fact that kids, as they hit puberty, can't express their feelings of love towards their parents properly.
Not in the fact that it can be hard for a 50 kg teen to keep up with the pressure from peers and parents to be the coolest and best 24/7 IRL, while online they get to be who and what they want in 2 clicks of a mouse.

When these camps are finally allowed to admit that they are failing (sure... they will "cure" some kids... who will switch to other obsessions, some of them much less healthy) - I have a suggestion.

    Sex camps!

Hire some pros and give the kids the choice - sex or surf. They will be "cured of the internet" in couple of days tops.
Instructors can still cheer them on and yell "Tell your parent's you love them!" at them.
  25. Water used as coolant - Computers will be on top on Sun to Create Underground Japanese Datacenter · · Score: 1
    From TFA:

The coolant will be ground water and the site's temperature is a constant 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit) all year, meaning no air-conditioning will be needed outside the containers. This reduces the energy required for the water chillers, used with surface-level Blackbox containers.

The containers will be lowered 100m into the mine and linked to power, water cooling and network lines via external connectors. They are going to use the mine as a heat-sink, computers are going only 100m under ground.
