An annual review, besides being a great opportunity to get a raise or some additional PTO, is when you should be discussing your plans and goals with your manager. Get this straight, you are not being "forced" to move into management. You can always leave. Your manager values your contribution, and possibly they are in a bind for some management help. If that's the case, offer to take on some management tasks while they interview for a new supervisor. Particularly if this is your first five years of employment, there's nothing wrong with wanting to stay technical, and they should be open to that.

    From the article:

A new NASA rocket engine, designed partly in Canada, raises the revolutionary possibility that a manned trip to Mars could take less than three months instead of two years.

    [...]

It would take about 39 days to reach Mars, compared to six months by conventional rocket power.

In three paragraphs we go from 89 days to 39 days. So which is it? With that kind of difference, I'm not quite sure it would be any faster than conventional rockets.

Round trip. Less than three months round trip, 39 days each way.

We are so adept at learning by association and extension that we can blind ourselves to the fact that nothing is truly like any other thing.

I remember in school learning that an electron is a wave, and also a particle. It drove me crazy to think that it could be like two things that are so different. It took me years to realize - an electron is like an electron, and as much as you can learn by saying it's like a particle, you obscure the fact that it has no direct analogy, so stop trying to squeeze it into something you're more comfortable with and start learning about it directly.
