The Halflife engine was the Q1 engine with a few things added: most notably, colored lighting - a Q2 engine feature, but developed independently from iD.
I owned a Powermac G4. I sold it to buy my 17" Powerbook G4. I later sold that to upgrade to my dual G5. The logic board on the G5 died about 3 weeks after I purchased it (Applecare saves the day).
I never deauthorized any of those computers when I sold them (2 of them not knowing I had to, the 3rd I never had a chance). Out of a possible 5 machines I could play my music on, I no longer have access to three of them. I've got my current comp authorized to iTMS, but that leaves me with exactly one 'free slot' - my next upgrade, a hardware failure, whatever - before I loose ALL of the music I've purchased (probably 275+/- tracks).
I'm not a pirate whatsoever (I like spending $ on stuff - gives the pride a boost) but to protect my financial investment in my music it's in my best interest to strip out the DRM simply for longevity.
Apple's system is great. I've got no problems with it. But they should have devised a system that would automagically deauthenticate a system after it hasn't checked in for X months or so (similar to Windows XP authentication) - but since it doesn't, I'll do everything short of stealing the files (from Apple or elsewhere) to ensure I don't lose the money I spent on their products.
I ran my PB17 for about 4 months (512mb, 4200? rpm HD, 1.33 ghz cpu) and it was plenty fast doing real world work (daily on-site video production for a public school system).
Is this the new angle of attack for the Mac-haters?
First they put away the dealers, keep our kids safe and off the street. Then they put away the prostitutes, keep married men cloistered at home.
Then they shooed away the bums, then they beat and bashed the queers, turned away asylum-seekers, fed us suspicions and fears.
We didn't raise our voice, we didn't make a fuss. It's funny there was no one left to notice when they came for us.
Looks like witches are in season, you better fly your flag and be aware of anyone who might fit the description, diversity is now our biggest fear.
Now with our conversations tapped and our differences exposed, how ya supposed to love your neighbor with our minds and curtains closed?
We used to worry bout big brother, now we got a big father and an even bigot mother.
And still you believe this aristocracy gives a fuck about you. They put the mock in demockracy and you swallowed every hook.
The sad truth is you would rather follow the school into the net cuz swimming alone at sea is not the kind of freedom you actually want.
So go back to your crib and suck on a tit go bask in the warmth of your diaper. Youre sitting in shit and piss while sucking a huge pacifier, a country of adult infants. A legion of mental midgets all regaining their unconsciousness
A DV bridge is like a capture card in that it bring video into a computer, except that (usually) it's an external box and does the dedicated de/endcoding in hardware rather than software. It also works only in the DV format (or sometimes DVCAM) which is exactly what you need for editing or TV/DVD production.
Usually it's firewire, and while USB2 is fast enough, don't get a USB dv bridge - firewire does works out of the box w/o drivers (even under linux).
Basically, a DV bridge translates whatever you send to it. If you have an external VCR or Dish! receiver, or anything with a compatible video source (RCA, SVHS, etc) it'll capture/play it. If you have a mini DV camera or tape deck, it'll losslessly transfer it to the editing computer. In essence, you choose the channel on the VCR, or the tuner, or the sat receiver - and that gets piped into the DV bridge.

The ADVC 100 or 110 is probably what you need. Unless you're working with film, or maybe high def (HDV, HDcam, etc) cameras, it'll be all you need.
The most common other standard besides NTSC is PAL (also SECAM, but don't worry about that). Most DV bridges work in both NTSC and PAL.
I've got mod points atm but rather than mod this up, I thought I'd just post instead.
I'm a video guy (I run a TV channel for a school system) and this is exactly the hardware you want. Don't get a TV capture card. If you want the ability to watch TV, use the TV tuner on the VCR to bring in TV through the DV bridge.
Again, don't get a capture card. Esp. one of the hauppauge 250/350 cards. They are great for making PVR/DVRs, but they don't bring is video that's useful for editing (mpeg2 - it's not a great editable format for nearly any platform, let alone linux).
Seriously, why buy something when you could 1) build it (probably cheaper) yourself and 2) learn more from building it? Most DIY projects have a habit of benefiting you at some point in the future in ways that you can't predict when you start them.
Either you - not you personally, the rhetorical you - 1) don't have the time, which is acceptable, or 2) you don't have the knowledge, which you should be trying to gain, or 3) you are lazy, which is really quite sad.
There's more to life than just spending money on a problem. There's actually figuring out the solution to the problem.
actually trying to stymie computer science research for itself? Horrible precidents and views are being taught in this country about preperation, preservation, achieveing goals. Not just for compsci, but nearly everything. Suit.. jailtime.. masked freedoms.. Argh I'm so frustrated with the direction this country is heading (and values/ideals it's teaching to the newer generations of tinkerers) that I can't form a coherent post.
This country is starting to blow.
NoFX's Idiots Are Taking Over is the new themesong for the USA.
Your retort doesn't even make sense, no wonder you missed the point.
(My subjective opinion) what artists make million dollar contracts? Recording artists, famous actors? Sure, some make $$. I'm also talking about artists (i'm one of them) that make sculpture, music, painting, theatre, anything that comes from some inborn gift they've been given. The 'starving artist' does what they do not to try to make money, but because that's what they've 'been called' to do. That's how they see their unique gifts or skills.
Just like clergy. Just like teachers. Just like fire/police officers. People do these things because they are beckoned to it. Not because they have hopes of retiring at 32.
Someone mod this up... it's pretty close to dead on.
Artists make what they make for the same reason the world has nuns and monks and other dedicated relgious types, and the same reason why business tycoons make their money: that's their 'calling'. Everyone does what they do because it's what they want to do. Not because of how one person expects other people to act or respond.
Gates' stance on money being the only incentive shows us a lot: 1) as we all know, his calling was to make money, and 2) he's got a very limited comprehension of the world around him other than what he knows himself.
The biggest problem with MSFT is that it doesn't think outside the box. Not in terms of products or ideas or designs, but in terms of recognizing that not everyone is the same, with the same goals or even the same approaches to problem solving. I think this is one reason why Apple is doing quite well now; the whole culture seems to be about personal creativity (not meant as artsy-fartsy) while persuing productivity.
Actually, you can get around this. Install the old OS. Then boot the upgrade CDs. Once you get to the dialog about choosing the disc you want to install to, format that disc. You're already inside the install well enough to 'qualify' as being valid, but you can peform a full install w/o going through the upgrade or leaving old unnecessary data.
To be honest, I'd never even heard of shill bidding until this post. I've got a decent ebay rep (~ 180ish feedback, roughly 50/50 buying and selling). I've never practiced that for any of my auctions and I've always gotten pretty much what I wanted when the item sold. I also only have 1 ebay account.
I've also never had a bad experience with eBay (bum sellers, nonpaying bidders...). I also don't get caught up in the head of the moment with auctions ending though, and I know legitimate bargains when I see one.
(I build guitars/basses, furniture, pens, other tools, speakers, computer cases, LCD front and rear projection TV housings, etc.. my workshop includes benchtop plainers and jointers, table saws, 14" band saws, the real stuff)
DO NOT PUT A COMPUTER IN YOUR WORKSHOP.
I can't stress that enough. You do not want to have this kind of distraction around powertools. While I've never been hurt (not by luck, by being obsessed about safety) I've seen more than my share of ripped off fingers, sawed up bones from people mentally slipping or getting distracted by anything and everything. You DO NOT want this to happen to you.
A computer will distract you when you should be focused on the tools. If you want to double check a plan, you stop what you are doing to check it. You do not glance up at a monitor or a screen in mid cut. That's when your loss of focus will harm you. The stop/start, while inefficient and probably conflicts with your inner geek, is needed and there for a reason.
Thank god I've been slowly outgrowing my whole rebelious gamer phase for a year or so now! Money much better spent on the little woman, I'm sure we'd both agree;-)
Uhm, what? First off, Javascript isn't Flash. Secondly, your comment is retarded and reeks of either scr1ptk!ddy or MCSE, I can't tell which.
(To be fair, I'm an artist and a graphic designer in addition to a techhead - my job requires a fairly even split among these branches, but philosophically, I'm more of an artist. The methodologies towards what works and how to get things done well is a lot different than the constant upheaval of the tech world. That being said.....)
I have ZERO server side technologies available to me (webmaster for a large public school system - the reasons why are numerous, mainly because of political incompetence - anyway..). I couldn't do my job if not for the fact that I'm quite a proficient Javascript -among other languages- coder.
New-fangled technologies are great. But ultimately, it's not about what you use to do a job, it's *if* you do a job and do it well. A tool is a tool is a tool. If it works and you're productive with it, rhetorical reasons for complaining about said tool are just stupid.
And so're my spelling skills!
Yet you do nothing to actual disprove the point made in the first place... You're rebuttal skills are laughably poor ;-)

Harry Potter 3 was as good as the book (best of the 3 films so far).
You know, that's a pretty good point.
I declare shenanigans.

there's nothing that can be done to stop it.
Sure, there will always fringe development or adoption of non-DRM tech, but it's pretty much here to stay now - end of story.

Maybe I can replace the Apple logo with a nice red 3.

True, but the only way others may find out about this is thru someone else communicating their point.
Sadly, truer words have never been spoken. :/

I can't believe that this isn't even common sense for a lot of people.
People are either getting dumber, or too trustful - either way, one is a sure sign of another.
Ahh, doesn't matter, La Palma is going to end life as we know it well before 2038!
