1. Re:wrong on Stern Will Jump To Sirius In 2006 · · Score: 2, Insightful
Stern has zero redeeming value. Period. You would be very hard pressed to find anyone who could argue shit like making fun of midgets and discussing breast implants with the intellect of a ten year old has "socially redeming value" - and I'll include Larry fucking Flynt in that group.
Why does Stern have to have any redeeming value? His ratings and long term success legitimize his existence.

Stern's a martyr, regardless of you understanding or accepting the factors that made him one. There now exists a precedent that states that only the rich or those willing to cough up the money have access to entertainment that doesn't need to be classified as acceptable for the 'public good' or having 'legitimate redeeming traits'. Don't you get that? Don't you understand the implications of that? People who can't afford freedom aren't allowed the benefits of freedom.

Money used to be the deciding factor of what got on TV and radio. The concern used to be that the public could be bought and sold based on who was willing to spend the most $$$. Evil corps only presenting one side, or agendas, etc etc etc.

The government is now doing the exact same thing, but the currency isn't money rather it's mindset catering to those with similar agendas. Imposition of mores by a government is a scary thing. Much scarier to the 'greater good' than any of the crap Stern pulls on his show.

I can't remember the last time I downloaded an mp3 (not counting iTMS)... definitely not within the last 3 years.

My views on piracy basically shifted once I got a real/steady job (~ 3? year ago) and was able to afford buying what I wanted. When I had no money (college), I didn't really have any respect for intellectual property (as opposed to tangible/physical property), things that I could get easily on the internet, etc.. I needed/wanted things, but I just didn't have the cash. Now that I can afford to buy things, my pride actually grows because I enjoy knowing that *now* I can buy things; I don't *need* to pirate to get what I want. It's a sense of satisfaction knowing that I have solved my problems of once not having money, to now having money.

Some people are just cheap, or just like to steal for the sake of stealing. But a lot of people who do steal do so not because they are thieves but because they just don't have the finances to get what they want. Nowadays, ultimately a thief is a thief, but intentions are what differentiate a criminal from a normal person.

Most modern moviegoers are a simple lot that don't have the capability to enjoy a good movie. Hollywood releases a lot of crap because that's what most people like and in turn will bring back the most money.

People who complain about a lack of quality work are the root of the problem. You complain, yet you still go, or you pirate it under the guise that 'at least the studio isn't getting my buck on their crap'. Make a stand, stop watching the movies you can predict will suck. I've seen exactly 1 'blockbuster' summer flick this year - The Village (great movie). I haven't watched (or subscribed to) cable TV for the last 7-8 months and my life hasn't been better. I've read more in the last 6 months than probably through all of high school and college.

People, start using your brains again. It's hard to go against what's cool and what's expected, but it makes you a better person for trying it.
