It's free as in beer, and it's open as in file-format (something which Max's default file format has never been - it relied on dynamic object creation by Max when you opened the file).
The default renderer in Max isn't Mental Ray, but it's own hybrid scanline/raytraceing A-buffer renderer. Mental Ray is one of the renderers for SI (pre-XSI as well), it's also avaiable as an add-on for Max, but it's a couple $K's per CPU. It's definatly not designed for real-time.
Hurrah!
I see a lot of people tout the Gimp as "equal if not better" to Photoshop.. and this really isn't the case.
The Gimp is nice, and well suited for smallprojects/online design work, but you're asking for heartburn if you try to use it in a largescale professional enviroment.
Allegro is still alive and kicking.. Damn that brings back memories. I wonder if my mikmod+dos only version of allegro is still on x2ftp? I wonder if x2ftp even exists anymore..
I completely agree with disallowing openly gay members. Try putting this situation in perspective. With the exception of fathers of their own daughters, males are extremely prohibited in their participation in the Girl Scouts. You can work for an existing park, or camp, etc, but you aren't allowed to "just join" and be a leader.
the thing that makes mp3 cool is that it's not tied to anything to make it work. mp3 doesn't require a decryption key (which limits its portability), it doesn't require you to "pre-register" before you listen, it's totally anonymous (so people can't track your bizarre listening habits), etc
how many encrypted songs will you have to buy in order to listen to them on A: your computer, B: your portable SDMI device, and so on and so on..
how many people actually think this came from Bill Gates..
scary

"Don't fool yourself for a second -- Microsoft's biggest mistake was that it wasn't using a more secure firewall to protect it's local machines - these machines should have been INVISIBLE to the entire internet, only available to MS's intranet."
Very good point.
I had the fortune of visiting the Microsoft Campus last year, and while there got a chance to go to the Museum they have. All of the computers in the lobby had internet access, yet they also had access to non-museum MS machines located around the campus. I know at least a few of them were probably not intended for public "consumption" due to the contents of some of the shared folders - nothing too fancy, but probably important stuff for MS.
I've been saying this for years - of course, none of you know me...;)
If parents were to be held accountable for the childrens actions up until 18, "adulthood", whatever, we would live in a much better world. Parents would suddenly take a MUCH keener look at what their children actually do everyday. It's funny.. you have to have all sorts medical tests, lawyers meetings, and pre-matital counseling to get married, but any two drunk slobs can make a baby, and ruin it for the rest of its life.
Anyway, people should be held accountable for what they do, and do not do. Don't raise your children? They do something bad? You go to jail.
When I spent $5k on a sweet Intergraph machine, I don't want random blue screens that are almost impossible to trace. People who build their own machines are almost ALWAYS the reason they have system problems. The don't handle a component properly. And sorry, installing Linux over NT is rarely an option for people who do NON-client/server related professional work (at least for me; 2001 - Maya for linux!:)
in my experience, *ALL* windows 2000 bluescreens are caused by faulty memory. I recently found out a 128 meg stick of ram was dieing on me. Not sure how or why it was.. it would randomly reboot the machine in both linux and windows, esp. during large file manipulation. I used that memtest86 (by some guy at SGI) on each stick, pulled out the bad one, and I haven't had a single bluescreen, random reboot, or device "failure" in close to two months.
heh, also a bp6, but not using the crap highpoint drivers...
Slashdot is NOT his site. It is owned by VA Linux. Although he currently has complete editorial powers over the content, he still has a certain responsibility to the owners, which are the shareholders of VA Linux, which happens to include myself. He clearly stated that he was 'abusing Slashdot' and I, as one of its "owners" don't particularly care for such abuses.
Ok, it's technically not his site. But if he has complete editorial power, why the hell can't he post his views?
It's actually kind of refreshing to see a semi-public figure NOT take the corporate line for once.
CmdrTaco, you said yourself you knew you were "abusing Slashdot" by posting your own personal political views on Slashdot's news network. So WHY did you do it? You were absolutely right!
It's funny, if he's guilty of posting his opinion, how's that any different from you posting your own views on whether he can post or not?

What is .NET exactly (in laymans terms heh)? Is it limited to Microsofts Office style applications?
it's called irony ;)
SCHWEEET!

of the Two Towers? the whole thing?
c'mon Nvidia!
:)
I'll be a total convert
This is going to be even more cool than when I got to see the original Shuttle piggy-back aboard it's jet carrier thing airborne over DC.
Ok, maybe a little too much excitement in that title.. but still, this is very cool!

not to mention portability between platforms..

so does this mean ram prices are going to skyrocket? or level off

haha you ninny, you mean 68040/Fat Binary Compatible ;) I do believe it was a Powerbook that saved the earth from destruction, not a Wintel book.
Wow, if only they had the G4 powerbooks in Titan: AE.. They would have never needed to find the ship to recreate the earth =)
Why don't you tell us what those differences are ;)

hah, damn, now I look like an idiot.
There are more Windows Blender users than Linux Blender users. yeah, that's what I meant.
