  1. Microsoft's message: use Linux, get sued on TomTom Settles With Microsoft · · Score: 3, Informative

I believe msft is being very successful with that message.

That message is what the entire scox-scam is about. Think about it, why sue IBM? IBM is not even a Linux distributor. But, IBM had just made a big contribution to linux, and msft wants the world to know: that sort of action does not go unpunished.

The tomtom suit is another slam-dunk msft victory. Msft gets free access to tomtom's patents, msft gets money from tomtom, and tomtom has to stop using fat. Most importantly of all, the message is broadcast: use Linux, get sued.

It doesn't matter whether or not the lawsuit has merit. Unless you have about $50 million to fight the lawsuit, msft wins as soon as they file the suit.

A BSCS is almost as difficult as a degree in engineering, but it's as worthless as a degree in Liberal Arts.

Look at the job ads, employers don't give a damn about your silly BSCS, they want experience - many years of professional, verifiable, recent experience, and in many different technologies, and no jobs have the same requirements.

Maybe there are few slashdot readers, who don't live in caves, who may have noticed that practically ever major tech employer has been laying workers by the thousands - especially US IT workers. And yet you are going to believe this corporate sponsored bullshit? You have my pity.

I have been teaching IT courses for the past 13 years. The drop-off in enrollments, beginning in 2001, has been remarkable.

Talking one-on-one with students, I have found that the prospect of losing a job -- or of not being able to get one in the first place -- because of competition from lower-paid employees both here and abroad is causing students to switch careers away from IT. And who could blame them? Working hard to earn a degree only to have the job market flooded by lower-paid employees is discouraging.

This indirect effect of hiring H-1B employees is one that doesn't get much discussion. Maybe it is time that it did, because we are losing the ability to compete technically with European and Asian countries.
