    It seems to me that most reviewers just install the distro, and base the entire review on that.

    I think this gives the install process a hugely disproportionate weight. Especially since installation is not an everyday thing.

    I'm much more interested in how the distro performs after it's installed. I usually have to have a distro installed at least a week before I start catching all the little "gotchas."

    Compiled BASIC, with functions, procedures, case structures, record types, local variables, etc. has been around about 25 years.

    You can write a program in MS-BASIC that's as well structured as any other language.

    If done correctly, BASIC is a remarkably readable language. And just about any BASIC created in the last 20 years has the features of FORTRAN and COBOL.

    You have to remember the type of thing most pop-up advertisers are selling, "natural male enhancement" that sort of thing. It really doesn't hurt to piss off the people aren't interested.

    One day sunw will say they have no linux strategy, the next day sunw comes out with their own linux distro. Sunw's support of scox leaves me with very negitive feeling towards this company, especially when it comes to linux.

    Linux is a threat to sunw's bread-and-butter business. I absolutely do not trust sunw's commitment to linux.

    Shorters are usually in for the shorter term, they don't hold there positions for several years like the longs do.

    Scox hit a new ten month low yesterday, and another intraday ten month low this morning. A lot of shorters may have decided to take profits now, rather than risk another month long ramp up of scox's stock price. You can always short again later.

    Of course the market makers will do what they can to perpetuate this trend, and 5-minute day traders will also jump in; perpetuating the trend.

    In any case, this is *not* long term investors. Scox has no value, and everybody knows it.

    Is a PC "setup" once the install program has run? If so, then most popular versions of linux, and all versions of windows are a cinch.

    Or is a PC setup when the printer actually works, and your PDA will sync, and your scanner works, etc?

    When applications install correctly on linux, and hardware is dectected, it's all easy enough.

    But when it doesn't work, it can be an absolute nightmare. Even for experienced users.

    JMHO.

    Following the scox case has been an eye-opener for me. I never really trusted ziff-davis, or any other pop-media; but now I think the tech pop-media is the biggest joke in the world.

    One of pet peeves is that after publishing outragous lies, they often just quietly change the story on the web-site. YOu go back to the "same" article, and select passages have been removed.

    Here's about all I do on the windows side.

    - keep my data in a seperate fat32 partition
    - backup regularly
    - use good AV software, keep it current
    - use zonealarm, ad-aware, and spybot (all free)
    - don't use msie, ms-mediaplayer, outlook, outlook-express, kazaa, morpheous, or any other software that's well known to invite adware/spyware. Plenty of free alternatives to all that.
    - keep a linux livecd handy.
    - delete all spam before while it's still on the server (I use ultrafunk popcorn).
    - never open email attachments from unknown sources.

    Do that, and you won't have much trouble. Probabably something I'm forgeting, but that's a good start.

    Wait a minute. I *do* all that. I use constantly updated symantec AV. I also use spybot and ad-aware. I use firefox and thunderbird - not msie or outlook. I don't open strange email attachements.

    And my PC is *still* infested with spyware - on the win2k side. I dual boot win2k and linux. I never have spyware/adware problems with linux.

    In many ways I prefer windows to linux. But when it comes to adware/spyware linux wins in a slam-dunk.

    Lots of books about FOSS, come with CDs included. So, libraries have been allowing the public to check out freeware CDs all along.

    Msft isn't doing that directly, but msft is doing exactly that, via scox.

    Trolltech goes on and on about how they don't support scox. I have a few emails from them. But, it's all lip service.

    Trolltech still owns about 1.5% of scox; and canopy/scox owns about 6% of trolltech, and yarro sits on trolltech's BOD.

    I would feel *much* better about trolltech if trolltech would sell their scox shares, and ask canopy/scox to divest from trolltech. If that happend, yarro would have no need to be on trolltech's BOD.

    If canopy/scox refused to divest - fine. But I want to see where trolltech publically asks canopy/scox to divest.

    Anybody can *say* anything. All we get from trolltech is talk. I will trust and respect trolltech when trolltech puts their money where their mouth is.

    Instead of press releases about how trolltech doesn't support canopy, how about a press release where trolltech asks canopy to divest?

    Trolltech wants to play both sides of the fence, and it doesn't work with me.

    LiveCDs sort of do this. Msft doesn't have anything to compare. Maybe the public doesn't care that much (until they boot from their hdds) but a step in the right direction.

    Beer company A falsely claims that the employees of beer company B are urinating in company B's product. How unfair is that to company B?

    Now imagine that company A's claims are headline news in dozens of publications for over a year. Sure, company B could call company A a liar, but a lot of people will avoid beer from company B, just to be safe.

    The scox case is exactly like that. Msft/scox is loadly claiming that Linux is "contaminated" with UNIX code. Yet, after an entire year, scox offers no evidence.

    After sitting on scox's laughable motion to dismiss for over six months. The judge *finally* declares: "I'm too stupid and lazy to set a court date, or to tell scox to lay off the unproven statements against scox's competitors. So, I'll just allow scox to unfairly bash the competition, maybe Utah will do something and spare me the trouble."

    This decision could not have possibly been more favorable to scox. Maybe the USA could learn something from Germany's justice system.

    Great news for scox, bad news for redhat, and everybody else. In case you didn't know: rhat sued scox to have scox stop saying that scox has grounds to sue linux end-users. Scox filed a motion to dismiss on the grounds that scox never intended to sue anybody. That was about six months ago. Since then, scox claims to be suing at least two linux end users, and plans to sue many more. The judge said, scox can say whatever scox wants - lehman act doesn't matter.

    I think sunw has claimed (against all evidence and logic) that linux is useful as a desktop, not a server.

    I believe, at one point, sunw claimed that only sunw linux was legal, because only sunw was specically blessed by scox.

    Actions speak so much loader than words. Sunw secretely supporting scox, and mcneally parroting mcbride, should tell you what you need to know.

    The day is coming when scox will have to finally disclose the super-secret open-source code.

    IBM will say: "Pfffft, after 15 months, the code doesn't even match"

    Scox will reply: "Well . .. it doesn't *literally* match. But is almost, sorta, kinda, similar, in a way."

    That way, idiot scox investors will *still* think scox has a case.
