    if you don't wanna be a manager ( and who does really), keep this role. Make sure you are visible ( as others have pointed out) and for your sanity keep coding either on side projects or in your free time ( assuming you have any)

    I was sick of you people before the DotCom run up and I am still sick of you people. Get a clue: 1. Hired to do a job that they had to teach you is bad news. 2. Playing games instead of doing work, bad news. 3. Did you LEARN?? No you went to bad company after bad company.

    And I wish people would stop calling them dot bombs, you were the idiots that thought working for a company with no real product was wise.

    He's buying CD's again because Slashdot's parent company has shut down the broadband link to reduce costs. Without a fast fat pipe the only way to get music in under 3 days is to *gasp* buy the CD. Welcome back to 56k and the dark side Taco!

    Please don't do this. Transcoding almost always leads to very low quality files -- and will lead people who listen to them to assume that all the artifacts are due to OGG, and not to the transcoding process. MP3 encoding creates certain artifacts. Vorbis creates others. By encoding to MP3, and then Vorbis, you are getting 2 sets of artifacts, plus the Vorbis coder has to waste bits encoding the MP3-created artifacts. MP3 players aren't going to go away, so please don't transcode: re-rip instead.

    Well you assume that all his mp3's are legal ripped copies from CD's he owns. if they are songs he downloaded, what choice does he have?

    Verizon is clueless. I have been checking on availability of DSL for 2 years now. Turns out I may be too far from the CO, but I may not be. No one I talk to at Verizon can tell me where my CO is located.

    I first thought that central PA was getting left behind by Verizon but a town not far from me has DSL so it's here just not here

    Simultaneous hours in this sense is if I log on and then without logging out I login in with a different modem with the same account.

    Yeah I was one of those 'acquired' by Earthlink. My latest fight with them? They claim that I was using 23 hours of simultaneous login. Ok but I have one PC with a modem and no one knows my username or password. I sent them an email and the dumbass rep told me that maybe I should consider buying another account if I didn't wanna pay for the extra login time. I got it straightened out via a phone call ( after I asked the rep on their Live chat *what* number I was calling from on the second log in and he had no clue). I'm gonna pay for June but this week I'm getting another ISP. They suck.

    I think the biggest fear on Yahoo's side concerning adding charges is that no one will pay and go else where. Take a look at the Free ISP's. They served up free connections til they coulnd't afford it any more and had to start charging. People left them.

    Blah. I'm sick of hearing those with families whine and complain. I've been a junior programmer. I'm single. I've told managers that they are just hurting themselves when they 'skip' designing and following specs.

    If I get fired, I don't mysteriously have this *huge* money tree to get cash from like some people think.

    Well I just did a Search for "One" a song by metallica and although a lot of songs with "One" came up......none by Metallica. But I also then searched for Metallica and 100+ results displayed.......so you be the judge.

    I have been doing searches on napster the past three days using such terms as Metallica and Dr Dre and they all still show up withh 100+ results.

    Move? I would have to move to Pittsburgh ( over 2 hours away) to get broadband. That'd make my commute to work 4 hours a day.

    Bugging the telco's is good but they don't really care.
