  1. Belkin Wemo Switch on Ask Slashdot: Options For Cheap Home Automation? · · Score: 2

Use a Belkin Wemo switch: http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F...

I've written a simple utility to switch them on / off based on serial number:

    See: https://github.com/d-w/toggle_...

    Works for me.

    Cheers,
    Dave

PS: For extra points, wear & monitor a Neurosky EEG monitor: http://neurosky.com/products-m...
Write a listener to recognise when you want the switch on (easy to recognise certain meditation patterns) and then use this to toggle the wemo switch closest.
(I've done this - just not on Github ... yet)

I have a problem with Penrose's hypothesis - maybe someone can clarify.
[Note IANAastrophysicist - so this may display blatant misunderstanding]

If the Universe goes through cycles of:
Big Bang-->Lots of matter (baryonic particles)-->No matter, just energy (photons) --> BB --> ...
then this suggests that space was not created at BB only matter - so universe is spatially infinite but matter expands into it following BB and then breaks down (eventually) and then we have a big-bang event again and the cycle repeats.

I thought one essential component of traditional big bang theory was that both space and time were created at the big bang. [I have no problem with the time creation - as time is a function of mass. i.e. no mass => no time]. But how do we get rid of all the space in time for the next BB??

This kind of shit bugs me.

It's like anything - learn it. Learn how to do it well. And stop complaining.

Tech-heads complain because people can't figure how to program a VCR. And quite rightly - it's a piece of piss. But non-techs decide in advance: "I can't do this", when all they really need to think is: "Ok, this device has been designed to make it easy to achieve common functions. Look at the buttons, interpret the symbols, keep trying untill you figure it out..."

It's the same with management, just do it. And do it well. If you're as bright as you claim, then you can be a great manager.

I'm a fully recovered catholic. I subscribe to strong-athiesm. I consider myself skeptic. However, one question which I've been thinking about recently:

What would it take for me to believe a god? Are there any possible sequence of events that would make me change my worldview?

No. In the case of some hugely compelling evidence, I may have to conclude that I am dreaming or part of some matix-like world. However the idea of suspending rationality (or reality) for a simpler explanation, seems a bit of a cop-out.

  16. Wiring a house for action on Internet-Ready Houses For Sale · · Score: 1
My folks are just about to move into their 'new' house. It was built in 1820 and such bad repair had to be completely renovated. I was put in charge of getting the house 'wired'.

The old bathroom upstairs was way too small, so they've used one of the bedrooms as a huge bathroom and the old bathroom has become the server room.

I have 21 (RJ45) ports about the house wired up to a neat little 32 port patchpanel that comes in it's own wooden cabinet (rack mount is a bit overkill for a house don't you think). I used CAT 5 cabling, though I wish I'd gone for CAT 7. (Although it isn't ratified yet, it supports a bandwidth wide enough to take TV!!).

The ports about the house are multipurpose: phone, internet, speakers and whatever else I can think of (but alas no tv).

I have the phone line entering the house and going straight to a port on the patch panel. From there it can be split to any number of different ports (so you can have a phone in the bath if you want).

I also plan to locate a hifi system in the server room with speakers plugged in wherever I see fit (great for parties!)
