Well, lets take a good look at what is happening with the official clients. Nearly all of the folks that I have contact with online use AIM. So, I am forced to use at least something that can talk to their client. Whilst at my place of employment, I use the 'official' version of AIM. Funny thing though. I get booted off at random times (seemingly, that is). Here I am getting some info on a particular C++ class, and boom! I have to log back on... and then it takes a good half hour for the bloody thing to even connect. It disconnects as it is logging in, over and over, I am cast into the void. I have tried several different clients on this damnable service. I am ready to move on... but I can't get anyone to make the move with me.

Well, since you pointed that out, let me point out the fact that it is nearly impossible to lock down a desktop workstation running windows. This is due primarily to the integration that is found in all of these wonderful M$ apps. You can launch any application from within Word? WHAT? Why on earth would I want to launch an application from the open dialogue of a word processor? All this mamsy-pamsy-feel-good integration is a big pain and a thorn in the side of any computer lab admins/security. Who was it that decided that integration and lack of control was a Good Thing(TM)? I'd like to know.

I have found that the OpenGL performance in X/GNU/Linux is far better than that which I was able to produce on the same box with any version of Windows with any version of OpenGL/Drivers. I'm no fan of Nvidia's bussiness practices, just like I wasn't with 3dfx's, but let's look at it this way... they have great cards, ATI has great cards, Matrox has great cards. They all have their own arenas... Matrox -> 2d, ATI -> 2d/3d, Nvidia -> 3d. Yes, I do think that there needs to be more competition in the overall graphics dept. but let's remember that comparing these three companies against each other is a mistake as they have somewhat of a niche market aim. It just so happens that more folks(vocaly) here on /. are more interested in 3d performance than with the antialiasing of their fonts. :)

However, I do know that you have to have a license for each installed instance of any Microsoft product, or one all-incompasing site license. I belive that my advice to you would be to learn all the catch phrases that are hidden within most EULAs and from that point on, you can just scan the EULAs of future software.

I was reduced to tears when I found that I couldn't get past 145k downloaded before the connection would become so instable that the download would time out.
This phenomenon is augmented when you try to run an update util such as MandrakeUpdate or apt-get or up2date. I would just be happy if I had a utility that when I download an .rpm, or a good 'ol .tgz or even a .deb that it would just list the deps and then point me in the direction to get them. I would at least like that functionality built into apt-get, or whatever package management utility that I decide to use at that time.
