Nonsense we should all bow down and submit before the mighty USA - after all didn't they save the world from Saddams Al-queda weapons of mass destruction - even if they where fictional. Aren't they the single handed saviours of the human race?
And if they can't compete in an open market of course we should let them legislate so that we aren;t allowed to compete with them. I mean its only fair isn't it.
I started writing this as a joke but I realize that the various governments around the world think like this for real. depressing
The key thing that needs to be realized is that the current situation CANNOT continue. The "piracy" of filesharing is not the basis for an economy of information which is what we need. (DRM is not a basis for it either).
Check out the Creative Commons for an attempt to make things like fair use an explicit right rather than an implicit one under current law. Ultimately we will need some sort of change.
This also has some really far reaching consequnces. I am involved in Web archiving - these DRM laws may prevent us as a culture from archiving our history. Which quite simply means we will not exist in history. I don't know about you but one of the things that motivates me is that I am contributing to something bigger than myself or my peers (or at least attempting to)
All the software that was ever needed was a word processor, outlook, excel and powerpoint - a few other bits and pieces.
I feel sorry for all those people building systems to run peoples businesses, the new phone networks, Air traffic control, software to let people access and work with their data in new and exciting ways, computer games...
All wasting their time - all the software industry needed to do was let microsoft do its thing.
The thing is though that that is the solution to a problem. No doubt the original designer was irritated at having to move his or her mouse up to the top to operate the controls. A bit of lateral/creative thinking and hey presto.
THIS on the other hand is a solution without a problem. Now the research may come in useful and someone else my be thinking "I wish..." followed by "I know - that machine learning stuff will help me do that". But in my (many) years of software development adding technology to products because its "cool" produces crap not gold. (although it did make a lot of people rich during the dot com bubble - no good products mind)
So lets get this straight- the American government wants to protect *my* children by making the world the live in a poorer place as well as being full of laws that stop them thinking for themselves.
Not always - I hire people who can do the job. I avoid certification like the plague (for the reasons mentioned above) and I recently have started being very wary about recent university graduates (in the uk) because they now seem trained to get jobs rather than do them.
I am about to be part of the procurement of a big outsourced project - and you can bet your bottom dollar that it will go to a company that has the (demonstrable) skills and not those with the best sales guys/credentials/BS
The best thing to do would be to record your laptop and the room on one of those digital voice recorder thingys and then you would be comparing like with like....
The news is culled from many sources - each of those sources are edited by people who decide how important any given news item is. This shows an amalgamation of those decisions allowing you to see at a glance what is deemed important or not. But if you would rather read your local paper I am sure no-one will mind
It would be all very well if it was as quick and easy as menus/windows etc. but for instance navigating around in ROOMS is like quake. I don't want to take 20 seconds to run round from my projecft folder to my docs folder (for example).
Virtual desktops do this kind of thing better too.
I can see that if I had a VR working environment it might be good but my screen is 2d and very accessible thank you very much (especially with 2 monitors)
Well, this being the case they are causing a lot of damage by releasing patches and they should stop. If their logic is to be followed there would be no attacks without patches. Civil Action anyone for M$ causing damge to our machines?
The article says that the most vunerable people need protecting. Perhaps instead of censoring the internet they should issue licenses for surfing the net. You could take an exam (like the driving test) to see if you are repsonsible enough.
Ha ha too true. Silence is a sure sign something naughty is afoot. :-)
I gave up on the baby monitor - used it for a while on the first one but it is better to get used to the sounds.
(as an aside my son is called Milo )
Having read both of your statements I know which one of you I would hire (and yes that *is* part of what I do for a living)

Good to see someone gets it.

Sure glad I ain't an american at the moment
Bit late but Fedora is a fairly leading edge distro - similar to the old red hat but 2.6 kernel, pretty recent versions of most packages.
I use FC2 on our project desktops 'cos its quick to install and gentoo on our servers 'cos it gives me much greater control.
The thing is that safe-send's business model - is get a sucker who thinks that they can get rich from spam and take their money.
I think that its an established fact that there is an endless stream of suckers.
Can't agree more.

There ought to be a rule that *somewhere* on every planet, moon, star etc. is called springfield.
and possibly beat him senseless
plus even if only consumer locked in hardware is available after a certain date - think of how many machines already exist.
We will still have machines to run our software on even if it means hodge podged clusters etc.
However - it probably wouldn't stop those people because it wouldn't recognize the tune.

these guys build custom home cinema installations so this was either for a client or I think their own demo to show off what they can do....
And the reason they would spend time and money making skins when people will churn them out for free is?

if GMail is a wind up its making a pretty big splash. Or it could just be some *very* astute marketing....
Why oh why oh why?

Its good to see that absolutley no one up to this point on the page has read the article....
