A few Years back, i was in highschool, I installed it on my computer, played it once or twice, then forgot about it.
About a month later my mom found it, and she was HOOKED. she for some reason, loved it. she played it for a few months, every day, for 30 minutes to an hour at least. (note: my mom is a sys-admin/geek, so shes spends alot of time sitting infront of a computer )
Eventually she gave up the game. but man, she was Hooked on it.
The use of '//' commenting is because I come from a C programming background. Now that I use java, I also make use of javadocs, and all the other neat commenting features java provides.
When i learned programming writing pseudo code was SUCH a big deal to the teacher that by the end of the year without even thinking i would write out the whole program in pseudo code, then, under each line of english add one line of code.
And has it ever paid off!
Now when I want to look at my own documentation, I just grep my java files and pull out all lines that begin with '//'
now when I am writing 20 pages of java code, and all my boss see's are comments I can tell him i'm am just writing Literate code!
I think, for cost reasons, that the first non-robotic missions to Mars should be one-way, and made by people who plan to die out there. The resources for trying to return someone to earth can better be spent on other things, heartless as that sounds.
I dont know about the rest of you, but if i was given the chance to go to mars, with the knowledge i would never come back, I would take that offer.
LET ME REPEAT:
I Kyle Lanser would be willing to go to Mars, and never come back.
>How much time do you waste on getting rid of this stuff?
ok, he already said it takes 30 minutes to make the copy.
>How many times can you possibly watch whatever movie in that it makes up for that time?
well, considering 2 minutes or warning and crap of that nature, plus the 5 to 10 minutes of advertising on some dvd's it would take about 3 viewings to make back the time.
>How much extra money are you spending on DVD-Rs to re-burn your entire DVD collection?
Irrelevant. by reburning all his dvd's he is guarenteeing that they wont get scratched up. something dvd's seem to do quite easily.
Why not make a kind of "Planet, Starter Kit"...
all the basic nessesities:
-lots of plant seeds
--something pretty vigorous, and dominant
-a bunch of eggs for animals, a few mammals, a few amphibians.
well actually, just make a kinda portable garden of eden to get everthing going, include the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy so they can find they way back to us some day, and include the encyclopedia galactica.
and with that in hand, we will just send off a few hundred thousand of them in every direction.
really, whats the worst that could happen?
.
.
Oh wait...
Just an Idea, as it is well known,
A: Max os X is based on BSD, BSD is based on standards.
Wouldn't it be relatively easy to port mac software to *nix?? even if the software is Closed source, couldnt you just email the developers of mac based sound stuff, and ask them to compile their stuff for an X86 based architechure?
Am I complely off my ball? or doesnt this seem like something that could be done to port all sorts of mac software to *nix? one of those things being sound software.
My actual letter was considerably longer with 3 supporting reasons of why this is such a bad idea, and they were written in a way in which common folk people would understand. I DID spell check my letter.
The letter I posted was simply a Pseudo letter. I imagine alot of people agree and they just dont know what to write. The letter I posted was just something to get them going in the right direction. I had assumed that everyone who was acutally going to write that letter WAS informed.
But like you said, and this should apply to everyone, Do spellcheck, DO list supporting reasons why it is wrong.
People, this really is very Important!
If you ever really wanted to help make a difference, here is your chance. This bill would change computer technology in such a crippling way we simply can not let this pass. According to this bill the TELNET protocol would be ILLIGAL to use, same with SMTP, any protocol which used plain text transfers would be ILLIGAL under this bill. yes there are easy fixes, such as making encryption wrappers for those protocols, but we should not be FORCED to encrypt our data. thats what SSH and SSL are for.
So go over to the Redhat site, its been slashdotted, so its not going real fast, but go over there, fill out your first name last name email address country and just write a one or 2 line thing saying why you think this is bad.
Dont have anything original ? here:
Dear Senator Fritz Hollings
It is my informed opinion that this bill should not go through. Yes there are good sides to it, such as stopping an extremely large amount of copyright infringments, but at the same time it would cripple the software industry in a very big way.
Thankyou for taking the time to read this.

Something I recall reading a while back was that AOL's Instant Messanger program did NOT have video chat abilitys because if aol added that they would have to open up there protocol. and they did NOT want that. now that the protocol maybe there is a chance that Aol Instant Messanger will add the video chat feature, which would in effect challenge MSN's messanger.
That or AOL will just go and change everything now...
Ha ha , Well it would be espeically useful if you lived on a farm ( i dont) but i hear the gas comin' out of those cows has enough methane to almost make it useable.

Price not that big a deal...
The new Palm Pilots prices are rising too, with the new palm 7's with the expansion slots, and the wireless connectivity stuff, they are priced around $400 to $500 as well, so Pocket PC's prices are not that far fetched.
That should be fixed in the next year or 2, recall the article yesterday about motorola and a few other manufacturers developing methane based electrochemical generators. they would be sabout the size of palm V, and they would power the average cell phone or pda for about 1 month. They manufacturers of these technologys said that this stuff would be in mass production within 2 to 4 years. another technology that will make that a non issue is that device which draws power from your own body heat. so with those 2 technologys and the power that lithium batteries are holding, power will not be an issue in 2 years.
Another option is that Curusoe chip, which changes its clock speed on the fly to conserve battery life.
Basicly, Battery power in the next year may be an issue but 2 years from now it wont even be something we are thinking about...
Well, the NUMERO UNO reason for the windows bashing is: most people who read slashdot run linux. Microsoft is a very dominant OS, they will not let other OS's run with them. Mac's OS (a competing OS), and Corel (can you say WordPerfect, doc editor competition) , the only reason they both exist is because A: microsoft gave them LOADS OF MONEY. and you know why they gave them loads of money, so they would stay afloat, thus keeping microsoft from being an all out monopoly.
Microsoft does not need linux. Microsoft BASHES linux on their web site. "recall '10 reasons windows is better than linux' " So with MS, either you are with them or you are against them. I agree windows has some high points, but overall, their history has been littered with MAJOR security holes, Major leaking of customer information. and worst of all, the price of that OS IS INSANE, they charge outragous amount for something that isnt even stable. if your car ran like windows you wouldnt even drive it. WINDOWS HAS PROBLEMS. and becuase they care so little about their customers, us linux users which have grown to love linux, have also grown a strong dislike/HATE for windows. years from now when windows starts to charge fairly, and starts being more secure, and starts not leaking all your personal info. maybe then we will reconsider, but until then. F*** Microsoft.

Motorola Has that to an exstent, alot of there phones have 2 way radio capabilitys, in which no cellular network is required to talk to people on the same phones. I am up in canada, and its like a common thing. I lived in Minneapolis 2 years ago, and some of the motorola phones there already had that ability. the range was around 3 miles, maybe 4.
so instead of the suggested digital network you would create with SMS, instead you have a voice network where everyone could just talk to each other.
I am actually quite suprised more you havent heard of this feature of the Motorola cell phones.
I live in canada, and we are so behind, like we are starting to get GSM, and we have digital, but phones like that wont be here for like another year or so.
Really kinda kills me...
What that Article Suggests just wouldnt work, some of the best games ever break most of those rules.
For Example, movie cut scenes, can you say WING COMMANDER any louder, that movie/game was just that, it was like an interactive movie, i LOVED IT.
As for graphics, gore and ya, once again, cut scenes, has anyone played Soldier of Fortune, that game is AMAZING, the graphics are UNREAL, the whole game has a great story line, just an AMAZING game.
Next we have Fancy New Hardware. Has ANYONE HERE ever played 'Need for Speed' with a force feedback steering wheel, Pedals, and good sound? its realllly coool, its like your really driving the car, and where your only 15 and cant yet drive, its ALOT of fun, using a keyboard just doesnt cut it, same goes for flight sim's when you are playing any of those Microsoft Flight games, they are just that SIMULATIONS, they are made to simulate real life, and using a flight stick with a throttle is about as close as you can get, once again, Great games.
So, maybe that little creed to make 80's games is 'revolutionary' or whatever,
Im gonna stick to the new games, the ones that make Me Go WOW! *grin*
No, it's illegal in the same way that breaking and entering is illegal- you break the lock on the dvd, then you 'look around inside'.
No again... its like breaking the lock on the dvd YOU OWN, and then viewing the Data that YOU OWN, its like breaking into your own HOUSE, and getting in trouble for not getting a LICENSE TO USE THE DOOR....
Its the end of the world as we know it, and I feel Fine......
It we are going to redesign that whole setup of icons and windows and stuff it should be something more effecient. Something that would make it more effecient for the user to use, access, and modify the data.
And of course, it should be effecient code:)

No... no its not...
I currently have 'unlimited' DSL in Calgary, Alberta through Telus, and I have not yet experienced ANY of these 'limits' everyone whines about.

I download at least a gig of stuff stuff a day, and i upload close to 500megs a day.
My only 'limit' is how many IDE drives i can have connected... hehehe
