Their is a project called "IRate" http://irate.sourceforge.net/ And it does basicly what your asking for. downside/upside is its all legal free music. So no nirvana, britney spears, or Metallica.
its free to try out, and works on windows and linux, and i think mac too.
Why is microsoft against the idea of the user customizing the look of his/her desktop? This just doesnt seem like a big deal to me. Every other gui in the world allows the user to change the look. Why is microsoft afraid of letting the user do this?
i am also suprised none of the vehicles planned for rollovers, like the 6 wheeler, it fell on its back and was out. how much work could it be to flip a vehicle back over, or, like you said, make it so it can operate upside down.
I think If they could get tim burton to help with the creation of the movie it could turn out almost as good as the book was....
almost as good because no movie does its book justice, cuz reading the book always invokes the humans personal imagination. For example the ideas behind the book/movie 'sphere', when person reads the book, their imagination helps the feel afraid by imagining to THEM what would be scary out there, whereas the movie its forced to generalize that fear to a specific object. but i am going on a total tangent now, so i will stop.
However, get the games to work nicely in Linux and I'll switch to using Linux full time.
"the linux crowd could just run the game, dont need to reboot"
The games would be written for linux, so, either you use your current install of linux, or if you dont have linux installed, you use the live cd bootable that is part of the game cd.
Also, just a general question, do you game on the same system you run apache on?
If so, why not consider picking up a 133mhz computer, and installing linux or one of the bsd's plus apache+php etc.. on it?
I am kinda in the same boat as you, I do Visual C++ coding at home, so my main system cant run linux and I too wouldnt want to reboot to play a game ( remember back win95 when you had to reboot into msdos mode to play most games, SO annoying) I'm just presenting this as one option, it would make video games crossplatform very easily.
Maybe a better Idea would be to do what someone else partly mentioned, where we just use cross platform API's then games are just recompiled for each os/proccessor. getting games on linux would be just as easy then.
Linux is so versitile. Linux can easily run off live cd.
LiveCD+games written for linux+computer
Why not turn the computer into another gaming console.
Like, ya, that way users dont have to install linux, they just: 1. boot up their computer with the video game cd, 2. the video game boots them into linux 3. the video game mounts dos partitions for file saving. 4. the game loads up.
The reason this isnt done on windows currently is because it would be IMPOSSIBLE to have a live boot windows cd that would support all current hardware.
How i figure it, video game manufacturers dont have to worry about OS compatibility any more, windows users are USED to rebooting, so, to reboot to play a game would seem simple to them, and the linux crowd could just run the game, dont need to reboot, and i imagine with a little bit of effort they could make a mac bootable version of linux, and then, getting it running on a mac just means recompiling the source for a different processor, and using a mac version of linux, say, a live OS X kernel?
Dude, you seriously need an alcohol addiction.
I was a computer geek, all the way, no social life, no social skills, 1 or 2 real life friends.
2 Years ago, i took up an alcohol addiction, it was the best choice I ever made.
Now, I get invited to parties, I Have parties (NOT LAN) I interact socially and physically with the female gender on a regular basis. And at the same time it hasnt affected my work life, I'm full time programmer, and the only reason i got the job was because a drinking buddy of mine recommended me.
But thats just me, maybe drugs or a sports club might do better for you?
I have read the diamond age, I quite enjoyed it. The book in the story teaches children, essentially raises them.
What i wonder is what would be required to create a book like this? Off the top of my head things that would be required are: <OL> <LI>voice and face recognition. <LI>enough memory to:<UL> <LI>remember everything ever said by the child <LI>teach a lifetime of knowledge <LI>answer every single 'why' question </UL> <LI>we would also need the computer to learn, the book would grow up with the child <UL> basicly, we need to wait another 40 or 50 years before all the technological requirements would be met.
But, in my opinion, i dont see why this couldnt be done. Instead of going to normal school you would essentially be homeschooled, with a book teaching you instead of your mom/dad.
That sounds like a pretty cool project your working on.

well i thought it was funny.

I doubt this will do that at all, people who go out into the wilderness to see those kinds of places are the kind of people who apreciate its beauty.
Knowing the EXACT location of some beautiful waterfall wont change who goes looking for it.
it will just change the methods used to find it.

dito.
Parents are in Pittsburgh, PA, USA,
I'm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
and i spend about 4 months a year on business trips in europe.
I get to see my parents once a year, and i'm away from all my friends for 2 months at a time.
I too would pay good money for an easy videoconfrecing solution.

ha ha ha, alcoholic robots, really though, you are right.
and we will be nerds long after it is cool too.
the heros may be good vs evil but the world in which they live still sucks!
oh man..
the 4 games you listed right there, they were all i played for years and years.
I assume you read about the military robots they were playing with. a few storys down the front page.
That right there would be a very good reason to research better energy sources instead of making things go boom.
Information is power. Those robots are directly linked to retrieving information.
What is more valuable?
lots of dead bad guys, OR
knowing the where and whens of the enemy leaders?
Tabs are bad because you can only see one page at a time, where-as 3 open windows ( i prefer 4 ) you can see all 3 at once.
you are quite correct.
I would not play a game if i had to reboot computer to play it.
in hindsight i can see that the idea of a live boot OS on a game cd is a bad idea.
I still like the idea of cross platform API's though.
However, get the games to work nicely in Linux and I'll switch to using Linux full time.

Loki games tried to go straight for making games for linux, and that already failed.
meanwhile,
wineX makes games work for linux, and they are so far pretty successful.

runs fine on a 486 ... see for yourself.
my 'old shitty' systems; the ones I use as foot rests, and linux servers are Pentium 500's.
What on earth are you doing with a 486???
I have not seen one in over 4 years.
(you dont need to reply unless your bored. I was just expressing my amazement)
"school teaches you how to learn. Something a video game can't really teach you."
I Disagree Completely.
School teaches you to memorize.
Too tired to elaborate...
Kyle
Hey, i'm not fat!
just lazy.
i like quicktime too.
Whenever i have the choice, i choose quicktime.
As long as the page is pretty simple, no server side scripting.
The Author would provide to Slashdot their site, compressed, tgz/zip/rar etc.
Then, we just share the compressed file on bitTorret.
Seemed to work pretty well for the Matrix trailer. (first use for me of bittorret)
