    By making laws extremely detailed, many such actions become pointless because the potential loopholes and debating points are removed.

    All of the above are good points, but the reverse is also true. Making obsessively detailed laws can also increase the number of loopholes. Some may enter in the same way bugs enter large software projects, and others may be inserted at the insistence of special interests, and simply "lost" in the rest of the detail.

    I do concede the point that the words "reasonable person" or "local community standards" really should not appear in any legal document. Hopefully, they would apply instead to the lawmakers.

    One question I've always had is, why do there need to be thousands of pages of laws? Personally, I don't think any one law (or, incidentally, contract or other legal document) needs to be more than 5 pages or so. Otherwise it is too complicated, or poorly written.

    Well, yeah. I know there are various Windows apps that have the same functionality (or more) than those that come with the various Unices. I was pretty much focusing on what came with the OSes in my (very very) little joke.

    That said, the 4 volumes may not be such a bad idea. People might be more likely to take a chance on a new author's book if it's normal paperback size.

    Heck, that's what they did with Lord of the Rings. Though I am now happy to see that there are almost as many editions that are either in one volume or six, which are really the more natural divisions than three.

    How is this theft of services?

    Because you have to pay a monthly fee to play everquest when you connect to one of their servers.

    But if you use a different server, you are not even receiving service from them, much less stealing it. What it really is is diminisment of services, which isn't a crime - it's competition. Verant just needs to make sure the events on their servers are more interesting than those on free servers - $10/month worth more interesting.
