  1. Think Subversively on iPod on Windows · · Score: 2, Funny

Tracy buys an iPod and a Dell desktop with Windows XP. She uses XPlay to get them working together. Tracy is happy.

Tracy loves how easy and intuitive the iPod is. The Dell and Windows annoy her though by just not flowing right.

An Outlook worm emails the private pictures of her and her boyfriends vacation to Hedonism II to her entire address book, including her grandparents, bookclub, and pastor. Tracy's Dell then explodes in a glorious ball of fire.

All that's left is the iPod. The angelic iPod. Tracy has to buy a new computer. Who do _you_ think Tracy will buy a computer from?

In my case, the powerbook eliminated two desktops with loud fans, consolidated work in Windows and Linux onto one desktop, plus added a portability that lets me work in a more relaxing way (like on the couch during The Simpsons).

For me the convenience of Windows apps, combined with the CLI and stability of BSD, and the silence of a laptop make up for having to learn different keys for navigating in vi and doing w/o a forward delete key. Of course it's a personal choice.

People survived without cell phones. Some were even happier before cell phones (I know I was). Blocking cell phone signals in some situations should be done - fine restraunts should do it. There are few things more grating than sitting at a table on a date and having someone at the next table ring and start a loud conversation... Of course he/she is having the loud conversation with someone on the phone while ignoring his/her dinner companions.

The problem is that people don't turn phones off/turn phone to vibrate in the proper situations. As this problem grows worse, I see no problem in the proprietors of movie theatre or restraunts or cafes blocking signals. They should put up a sign saying so, but it is THEIR business. Many of the places I frequent, the proprietor tries to maintain a certain atmosphere. If cell phones tings come too often, I'll leave. Just like tossing out obnoxious teenagers or drunk frat boys, asking someone to stop smoking, or whatever, there's nothing wrong with blocking cell phones if it becomes too troublesome.

Anyway, why do people have to be reachable 24/7? (Don't bother explaining that servers crash, accidents happen, blah blah blah... I know all that. I'm asking slightly rhetorical, deeper form of 'why'.) Wouldn't you enjoy sitting and finishing a nice dinner and movie out with a friend before you find out your mother was in a car accident?

I'd equate this to smoking in a way. Many places ban smoking not for health reasons but for quality of life reasons. Smokers do physically need nicotine, but they'll go without sometimes so that they can hang out with friends in a non-smoking section restraunt. Cell phone users do not NEED their phones. Why can't the proprietor ban cell phone use?

My personal rant because you /. people are starting to annoy me and haven't had enough coffee.

Limiting one entity to one domain will only piss off more people and cause even more fraud.

For example, my last name is "Harvey." I'd love to have "harvey.org" or "harvey.net" for my extended family. It's the perfect site for gatherings, finding distant relatives, working on geneaology, and email addresses that mean something. With your idea, if I register that, then I can't register "twosunconsulting.com" for my sole-proprietorship. Legally, both would belong to the person, and I don't believe anyone would doubt my claim to both.

Legal rationing doesn't help much of anything. Look at China's rationing of children and the extreme "rationing" is even worse. Look back to the US's prohibition of all but medical alcohol. Fraud was rampant. If you ration domain names, then my dog and fish and grandmother will all own names that I have a legit right to.

And why shouldn't GM own both generalmotors.com and gm.com? They have a legal claim to both. In the US (who's laws pertain to .com, .net, and .org), they could probably wage a nice legal battle under the 1st Amendmant and copyright law.

Let's limit them to one phone number, too! The new area codes popping up all over the place and 10-digit dialling are bigger pains in the ass than someone not being able to register "redchucks.com."

How do you handle spin offs and mergers? Palm was an independent company. They had palm.com. What happens to palm.com when 3Com buys them? They have to sacrifice palm.com for 3com.com/palm. 3Com then spins them off into a separate company, but Joe Schmoe, having no domain names and seeing a good investment oppurtunity, bought palm.com when 3Com bought Palm. Now he wants $30 million.

One other thing: THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO RATION THAN !@#$% DOMAIN NAMES!!!!!!! Ration energy, ration gas, ration housing square footage. Ration all those things that people overconsume at the detriment of others and the environment.
