How were the railroads built (hint: cheap Chinese labor)? How many people died building the bridges and canals that helped make this country prosperous (hint: a lot)? I could mention the wiping out of pesky indigenous animals, plants and people, too. Do you live on land that used to have an American Indian tribe on it? Seen them lately? Is that not enough? How about Child labor? Unsafe factory conditions? Wholesale devastation of content-wide forests? Labor problems put down via government thugs? The US had all of these things in spades. So did other countries, but I'm most familiar with US history.
Arent you simply proving my point? If these kind of acts are 'right' and 'just' in order to emulate the American standard/system, maybe the thirdworld (and the rest of the planet) should think about at what cost does 'success' come. The planet is tremendously prosperous at this time. What you are saying is that it is necessary for the planet to 'spend' these natural resources, to exploit people, and to victimize labour all in order to emulate a system that is corrupt and morally sickening (as your assertion above demonstrates). I would say that the last 200 years of enlightenment and prosperity is equally owned by all people. By Ethiopians and Mexicans, Canadians and Greeks. American legislation allows what would have in the past been a public good, now be used as a tool of an endless Money Machine (multinational corporation). Think copyright, think patent, think registered trademark. (The idea that these are necessary to promote the production of art and culture, which protect artists, is a myth maintained by the likes of the RIAA et al. But that is another discussion;) ) If we apply the technologies and wealth of the present world to promote equality and social justice. Advocating slavery and raping of the environment, as a means to a questionable end is disturbing.
All that the Third World countries are saying is "Look at how your countries developed! You had no standards for safety and labor until you could AFFORD it! Why can't we have the same chance?" Then a bunch of rich, white, idiot teenagers come along and tell them, "We know what's best for you."
I disagree that the 'third world' is demanding that at all. I would venture a guess that it is the same American Money Machines saying 'Americans are living so well that we need a new, more desperate land/people to exploit in order to maintain the ever spiraling rate of consumption.' With out that America will have to do a little sharing, or better America will have to leave a little for these peoples. Like 'save some water for the fish'.
Please point out the time, date, and place where the average person had more of a say in how their government worked.

I am not American. I am Canadian. I see America and its powerful corporations as an extreme threat to my own country and its policies as Power Rich Americans convince other Power Hungry world 'leaders' that this system will enable them to live the same lives of 'prosperity' as they (American PoweRich) do. That if you just sell your brothers and sisters, the ones you are supposed to be caring for, that you will enjoy the fruits of the planet for the rest of your life (and the lives of many of your children).

Did you say that outsold? What your saying is that the present system of raping the environment and other countries is a good thing.. and is acceptable to you. That is also a point in favour of Napster/this Lawsuit etc. Because the RIAA has been artificially maintaining these systems for no 'good' reason except to maintain revenue and their control on the industry. The internet has completely liberated musicians from the necessity of these things. Absolutely obsolescing the RIAAs members. Maintaining a system that only serves to allow you to gouge people*** and propagate your oligopoly is anti-competitive. Kinda Funny - as Ive said a dozen times but lastly here.
AOL has a contract for browser-supply that predates their Netscape purchase. Mozilla is building the 'worlds greatest' browser (for most). It will be full featured and powerful. Gene testing and mapping are proceeding far ahead of humanity's ability to prepare for it or consider it. As testing becomes increasingly common, individual humans are already overwhelmed by social, moral and philosophical questions. Researchers at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston have recounted how a woman who'd had ovarian cancer was tested for recently-isolated breast cancer-related gene mutations, mostly for the sake of her two adult daughters. But when she told them she tested positively for the cancer gene, her daughters were so upset they stopped speaking to her.
Katz: I realize your desire to be sensational and 'thought provoking'. I know you are required to write things that are 'out there'. But the above instance is irrelevant to the point I believe your trying to make.
My Mother has died of Cancer, My Father has survived prostate cancer for the last 5 years. My 20 year old sister has been in remission from her cancer for 2 years now. The doctors tell us that my two 'healthy' sisters and I stand an 87% chance of experiencing some form of cancer in our lives.
Is it the fault of my family members?
Obviously fucking not.
By your publishing a re-counting of this story, for whatever purpose (i cant see one), you are attempting to associate the feelings of the daughters to be a natural reaction in a society unprepared to realize this data so 'easily'. By publishing such a story, you appear to rationalize the actions of the 'two daughters'. You present the idea that it is 'acceptable' or 'justified' for them to have acted in this way. Whatever point you are trying to make, you did not. The actions of these two daughters are obviously shallow, immature and misguided. Under NO circumstances is such an 'opinion' justified.
Even if the world is unprepared to accept the 'responsibility' of unraveling our genetic mystery, it is obviously irrelevant if a family (first person relationships) cannot be conducted in a more compassionate and enlightened manner.
The user 'we' would log in as likely dosnt have permission to do such a thing. Nor would the 'user' executing the CGI. The ability for 'anyone logged' in to wreak such havoc is the reason certain other OSs are unstable and not secure. Look into it - you may find yourself liberated.
The current state of Mozilla/Netscape is of NO surprise. Amazon owns Netscape. Amazon bought Netscape to make money. Browsers are free (as in beer). AOL presently licenses MS Explorer as its "AOL Browser". It already has a measurable 'asset' in the present license. They W I L L N O T be interested in shipping a 'final product' until the MS deal is finished. I recognize that independent OpenSource hackers dont share the POV of AOL, but it is Netscape (AOL) that is driving the timing of the project.
Free==No Revenue. No Revenue==No Interest by AOL.
AOL has exhibited their unwavering dedication to _MAKING MONEY_. They dont care about OpenSource or the need for a compliant browser. That is very naive.
. Life is about risk, and as soon as we turn away from exploring and understanding this universe, we have given up our birthright.
That statement almost made me cry. No, I am not joking. This is _NOT_ flambait or sarcasm. Think about it. Humans are about curiosity and courage, adventure and exploration. The inner solar system beckons our arrival... why are we wasting our time with McDonalds/CocaCola etc? Wouldnt these energies (collective resources wasted on mass consumerism) be better devoted to worthwhile and grand projects like exploring the Solar System we are surrounded by? I wonder what has led us astray... How can there be any question what the priorities of Planet Earth's People should be? Why are we not vigorously pursing this kind of knowledge?
No - Drugs (alcohol, Marijuana) are _EXTREMELY_ popular in Canada and the US. Popular support for the legalization for marijuana has held a majority for many years. Its right-wing & religious zealots who spend a great deal of time lobbying who have held back reasonable reform to criminal drug law.
Its the 'middle' group (you, me, my neighbour) who are 'normal' (read not a memeber of any Church, Gun Rights Group etc) who are being ignored. Law should reflect the moral and social opinions of the general population, not a small but vocal minority.

MORTICIAN: Oh, I can't take him like that -- it's against regulations.
DEAD PERSON: I don't want to go in the cart!
CUSTOMER: Oh, don't be such a baby.
MORTICIAN: I can't take him...
DEAD PERSON: I feel fine!
CUSTOMER: Oh, do us a favor...
MORTICIAN: I can't.
CUSTOMER: Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won't be long.
MORTICIAN: Naaah, I got to go on to Robinson's -- they've lost nine today.
CUSTOMER: Well, when is your next round?
MORTICIAN: Thursday.
DEAD PERSON: I think I'll go for a walk.
CUSTOMER: You're not fooling anyone y'know. Look, isn't there something you can do?
DEAD PERSON: I feel happy... I feel happy.
[whop!]
CUSTOMER: Ah, thanks very much.
MORTICIAN: Not at all. See you on Thursday.
CUSTOMER: Right.
[clop clop]
MORTICIAN: Who's that then?
CUSTOMER: I don't know.
MORTICIAN: Must be a king.
CUSTOMER: Why?
MORTICIAN: He hasn't got shit all over him.
Thanks...Good eye Pipe. Amazon _ALSO_ sucks.
Even if the world is unprepared to accept the 'responsibility' of unraveling our genetic mystery, it is obviously irrelevant if a family (first person relationships) cannot be conducted in a more compassionate and enlightened manner.
...ummm
Free==No Revenue.
No Revenue==No Interest by AOL.
